ok, after a number of pave-overs of the box, i finally have a working boxee setup.

it's in the living room at the moment, awaiting long component cables so i can throw it into the basement.
i used a base unbuntu 8.04 and the ati drivers from ati's site. ubuntu restricted drivers didn't have the control panel i needed to configure the tv output as i liked. (also didn't handle having just the tv and no 'real' monitor)
i'm using a real xbox remote at the moment, happened to have a xbox to usb adapter laying about the house so just threw it on. i had to blacklist the xpad driver though so lirc could see it.
i also had to blacklist the audio driver on the ati card (which is a weird place to have a sound chip since there's no audio jacks on the card) in order to get boxee to play digitally over my audigy sound card. there should probably be a way to tell boxee which sound card to use, if i try to throw boxee on my main 64 bit box, i'll want boxee to use one sound card while the rest of the system uses another. (in the case of the ati card, the entire system used the audigy properly, only boxee tried using the ati card)

a few niggles in boxee at the moment.
1. some videos it's recognized, it won't let me change. i have an anime (moonlight mile) which boxee thinks is some movie and doesn't have a 'wrong guess' selection under more. (it's a mkv btw)

2. i have a number of movies/shows/anime that are in a few parts but boxee shows them as all the same thing, kinda hard to tell which part is which.

i think that's the big points at the moment, boxee is working great and is handling my entire collection nicely, great app!!

@skywise thanks for sharing!

regarding the sound card, you should be able to define in boxee which output is used. see outputs using amixer -d, and under boxee settings > system > audio hardware.

re the first issue (missing 'wrong'), can you give more details (if you want privacy, email me at tsella boxee tv), such as full path, filename?

re second issue, we are automatically stacking under some conditions. if you find that we are doing it wrong, please provide examples.

ok, i researched the naming thing and it depends which direction i come at the video.
if i goto my sources and wade down my file structure to the video and look at it there, when i go (i) more, the wrong video option isn't there but if i go at it from the main video menu (just scrolling down the list till i get to it, select the video, and then (i) more, the (x) wrong video option is there.

oh, something else i thought i'd mention, you might want to setup a way to sort the videos/music in the main menus.
my video menu is 8 pages long so far and it's doing single entries for things like looney tunes shorts. if boxee manages to find descriptions for all of them, that's another 200 entries.
my music collection comes out at 40 pages, a bit overwhelming. :)

one thing that would be very nice would be to be able to select a genre and have it go find some music. i had a player some years ago that did that and it was great.

oh my, switched to album mode, 78 pages of them. :) (which I think is a bit low, i have nearly 2000 albums. is there a way to have boxee show you what it hasn't sorted out so i can try and get it into the system?)

think that's enough for one post. :)
