View Full Version : YouTube busted, or is it just me?

Hey,
I was using YouTube just fine this morning, but this evening it doesn't work at all. I go to watch a video, and the screen just goes black after going to fullscreen, yet the time elapsed climbs no problem. If I go to the browser, I just get a black box where the video should be playing. Sound isn't playing either, as it just seems like Youtube in general is busted. The leanback app even just turns the screen black when I load it.
Pandora was also giving me issues earlier today also (I'd get the spinning circle indefinitely), so I decided Flash must have gotten corrupted on the box. I did a factory restore, upgraded to the latest firmware, wiped the settings one last time for thoroughness, and then set up everything like before. Pandora works fine now, but YouTube is still broken.
Anybody else experiencing this, or am I experiencing this alone?
Thanks for any input!

Nope not just you. I am in the UK (if that makes any difference) and Youtube via both app and browser give a black screen. Other things seem ok and I have the latest version of the box update. Rebooting didn't fix it for me.

Yes another UK user whose you tube app is just giving a black screen on start up. Nothing more, nothing less.
Browser working fine so far as I've tested.
Any ideas what would cause this, and more partiuclarly when will I get it back.

I had the same problem yesterday but only on one of my two Boxee units.
Accessing youtube via the Boxee Browser is fine except there is no video or video controls. The site itself works fine. The YouTube App doesn't work at all, just a black screen.
I did a settings reset then a factory reset to no avail.
Like I said, I have another Boxee on the same network so it isn't a network setup problem.
Is it possible google changed something in their code without telling anyone and broke our apps?

Looks like it's not only You tube, other videos when I try to view in the boxee box browser also are not working, like in bluesnews.
Seems the problem is in the boxee box browser.

If I'm allowed to guess, it would be that the Flash needs to be updated for the Boxee box browser code. Looks like maybe the firmware needs to be pushed soon.

Thanks everyone for letting me know! I was a bit worried it may have just been on my end, so wanted to verify otherwise.
I believe the updated firmware is in testing around now, so hopefully we'll be pushed one soon with an updated Flash. If that's not the problem, hopefully the YouTube guys fix whatever happened to change on their end.

I don't think it's on You tubes end, it's definitely on Boxee boxe's code end.
You tube works on my PC.

I see there is a ticket now, so that's good. It is marked as a blocker for release.

I hear ya. :)
Youtube XL in the browser works, as well as youtube.com/html5. That said, the HTML5 site borks the browser fairly quickly, so it's not worth the time. For now it's probably best to use the XL site or go through Navi-X. I mostly use Youtube via the Watch Later function, so neither solution is really satisfactory. I'll get by somehow though, haha. :)

A little known gem for those who use Navi-X to watch YouTube videos... you can choose your format resolution and set it as your default when you playback videos from YouTube. I have mine set for 1080p by default so it always tries to find it first and if it doesn't it grabs 720 or 480 and so on before it grabs SD.
To change this setting for Navi-X, go to http://navix.turner3d.net/members/ and when you are logged in, click on your username just below the "Forums" button and under "Preferences", you will see this option: Youtube processor preferred format... good stuff! :D

I bought a box and set it up yesterday. today youtube doesn't work. is this a common type of problem, and is it likely to get fixed quickly ?

June 16th, 2011, 02:18 PM
It can happen any time the website changes (e.g. if YouTube changes how they display/stream content from their servers). I wouldn't say it's common or happens frequently but it does happen. The fact is, online content is a moving target.
The issue was reported to their tracking system by a Boxee employee shortly after this thread was started (see the post by KostaBr, a Boxee employee) and has been marked critical by the Boxee team so I'm hopeful that it will be fixed quickly...

I noticed the Fix Version changed from 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 earlier today. I don't really know the ins and outs of the Boxee software release process, but does this mean they plan on releasing 1.1.2 next, and will fix YouTube in a subsequent release, or does this mean the next release will likely be in the 1.1.3 branch instead of the 1.1.2 branch?
Edit: I am referring to this ticket -> http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-10178

Just out of interest from a boxee noob, how long does it normally take for boxee to sort this type of problem and I assume it'll take some sort of patch or update to fix it? Will that automatically happen on the boxee or do we have to keep checking here?

Youtube XL works fine, sadly that doesn't help being able to watch anything on our friends or watch later lists.
Lets hope we don't have to wait too much longer for a fix.

I wish I found this on the forum earlier. I cleared all the cache/cookies. I did a full factory reset and firmware upgrade with no luck.
Unfortunately in the UK a lot of the on demand services have moved to YouTube Channels (like 4OD) so it's a massive hit for online content at the moment. :-(

I'm in the same boat. 90% of the content I watch with my Boxee Box is on Youtube and I haven't been able to watch anything on Youtube for, at least, the past 4 days. I have loved my box since the day it was released. Keep up the great work and hopefully a fix is found soon.

Guys we are working to fix this with youtube asap ..
Thanks! Great to hear.
I've been getting around it by using the Youtube XL site, but the main problem is for those that appreciate the ease of using "Watch Later" without having to resort to searching for the desired video.
It's not the end of the world to have to have to actually search and all, so I think as long as it is fixed by the time the next release drops, most of us will be happy.

If it takes more than this week I don't think people will be happy to wait at all. But I am sure it won't take that long to sort out. If Youtube XL works and so does the Navi-x version then I am sure boxee can get us up and running in no time.

June 19th, 2011, 06:50 AM
I've looked into it for my bartsideetv app, but it seems that a new ad system of google is messing up the boxee flash player. I've solved it to extract the direct streaming url from the website, but it think they need to incorporate this into the firmware rather then upgrading a js actions file. (which would be sad for users of the platform versions) Or make a revision of the app, but I doubt they would going to scrape the streaming urls, I'm curious how this will be solved, it would explain the current down time. For now just use the 3th party apps.

Nice work, it has to be quicker to load your app than the browser and then go to faves and then youtube xl
I wish we had an option to put out fave sites onto the app list instead of having to open the browser and see that horrible Bing page. Google would be my first one.

No update available thus far.
I suspect like bartsidee (who has technical knowledge to back up what he's saying) that this will require a firmware update to fix properly. That said, the bug is now marked as closed, so I suspect it will make it into the next firmware push, which will be 1.1.2.19250 or higher.

I'd also like to point out that before the watch later feature stopped showing video all together, it would only play 3 or 4 minutes of a video for a week before that.
When entering 0's into the Bing search engine, search returns spacing instead of the zero's.
Facebook photo viewer (Flash) allows you to see 5 images, then it hangs. You need to close the window and start where it left off. Far from a rewarding internet experience.
The browser now sometimes doesn't even load at all. When I do use the browser, it crashes constantly.
Boxee is now relegated to a media player for my local files with a fancy animation at the beginning.
I really wish updates would not be forced on us. It would be swell to wait a week or two after updates as it seems some major errors are being pushed to us like we're beta testers. What is this, OS X?

Boxee is now relegated to a media player for my local files with a fancy animation at the beginning.
Mine is starting to not even do that very well. I get audio cut outs on HD television shows and movies stored locally. Audio sometimes doesn't start playing till a few seconds after video starts playing for almost all media local and streaming. Recently if i pause some videos and come back a min later the audio is out of synch with the video and i either have to press rewind or stop and resume to get it fixed. I am starting to think i should go back to my old media player instead of this.
also all the files i have issues with on boxee box work just fine on a wdtv live, and live hub.
