Conclusion first: If you're using an ATI 2600 series video card you might need to go with the Envy driver install method rather than the latest drivers from the ATI site.
First off, I think the Resolving OpenGL Issues (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=345&highlight=slow) post content needs to be moved up front to where downloaders come across it right away.
I recently picked up an ASUS ATI 2600XT from Newegg (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121082) when I found it for $20 after rebate (and still for a couple more days)
I have a Kloss (KL-I915A) POS. It's a P4 2.8GHz, 915G chipset, have 2GB of RAM and the ATI 2600XT.
I first tried to install Boxee on Linux Mint 4.0 - Darnya (Gutsy Gibon based). I had installed the ATI graphics drivers from the ATI site (the latest 8.8 or whatever) after Envy had some errors and failures. Boxee wouldn't load but would seriously disturb the color rendering for the desktop and all other apps. Tossed it
I tried on a stock Ubuntu 8.04 install, again with the latest drivers straight from ATI and this time loading Boxee just white washed my desktop and I was just left with the cursor. Tossed it
I tried again with just the straight restricted driver option from Ubuntu and Boxee actually loaded from this but it was devastatingly slow. I switched off the vsync setting and that had a minor effect but it was still totally unacceptable.
At this point I found the OpenGL Issues post and went back and downloaded Envy and used that to install the proprietary ATI drivers. That did the trick. Navigation is pretty smooth now. I have a Gyration Win-MCE remote and and it works but I'm still trying to figure out what the non-obvious buttons might do.
