View Full Version : Backspace and Esc still not working as they should

I see you have fixed some of these issues, however some still remain...

Areas where Backspace should work but doesn't

Click Play for an album, it brings up a track listing which only Esc will get you out of.

Load up Settings/General and only Esc will get you out of it.

Load up Settings/Credits and only Esc will get you out of it.

Areas where Esc is inconsistent in what it does

Load up your Pictures, then load up a specific folder of pictures. Hitting Esc takes you back to the home screen. (works with other media too). But.... Load up Settings, then load up General. Hitting Esc takes you back one screen to the Settings page, ie. takes you back one screen rather than take you to the home screen as it does with media.

Either Esc should always take you back to the Home screen or it should always take you back one screen/menu.

Other oddities

When on a DVD menu neither Esc or Backspace will do anything. You need to first start the movie playing before you can go back to the Home Screen.

Areas where Backspace doesn't do anything but is consistent across Boxee suggesting you have done this deliberately.

Watch a DVD and hit Enter. You can't kill the menu that comes up with backspace only Esc. The same is true if you are listening to music and bring up the controls there.

Bring up any sub menus after hitting Enter, such as the Lyrics also can't be killed by Backspace.

This is consistent throughout Boxee but it feels like something is wrong that the button I've been using to navigate back one level suddenly doesn't do anything.

I feel like Backspace should consistently take you back one level or menu screen where ever you are.

Suggestions

When watching a DVD the Backspace brings up the homescreen. This feels like it is jumping you back several menu screens instead of one menu screen that Backspace is doing everywhere else.

If you think about the steps you took to load up the DVD video, the DVD's menu is actually one menu/screen back from watching the DVD, not the Home Screen. I suggest that Backspace should be mapped to bring you back to the DVD's menu (Esc can still be mapped to Home screen)

At the moment I feel like it's requires too many clicks to get to the DVD menu anyways, so this would kill two birds with one stone.

Conclusions

Someone on your team needs to take half a day off from fixing technical bugs and just go through every menu and write down what the buttons do. That's the only way you are gunna spot all these issues.

I think you also need to decide what Esc is for. Sometimes it works as a "Home" button that toggles the Home screen menu on and off regardless what screen you are on, other times it works just as Backspace does taking you back one menu level. Either the two buttons needs to have identical functionality or you need to decide what the difference is between them and stick to it across all of Boxee.

Hi belovedmonster

Firstly i have to say impressive long report...
I believe we mentioned this in previous threads ,currently you are correct that there is still some inconsistency in how the "Backspace" and "Escape" buttons are working in specific areas of boxee .
I have opened up a bug report regarding this issue and hope that we will find all the inconsistencies .
The overall idea is the "Escape" button will return you to the Main screen while the "Backspace" button will move you up one level.

Thanks again to your oddities/suggestions and conclusions...:)
