View Full Version : new version issues

So i just got the new version and have been playing around with it a little bit. I'm not in a position to do a comprehensive test (which usually involves crashing my machine) right now, but here are some issues i've noticed so far. Bugs first:

1. The 'Show hidden files and directories' option still has no effect. Regardless of whether this is enabled or disabled, boxee always shows hidden files.

2. Similarly, the 'Hide Media Extensions' option has no effect (unless it means something other than what i think it does). Every file that boxee displays has an extension after it regardless of whether this is enabled.

3. Minor capitalisation and spelling errors, at least in the UK-English version. For example, as indicated above, under 'View Options' in the Appearance settings the capitalisation is inconsistent (title case in 'Hide Media Extensions' versus sentence case in 'Show hidden files and directories'). Same thing in the SMB Client, Music, and Pictures settings. There are also inconsistent spelling standards in use (for example, 'Visualisation' with an s, but 'Recognize' with a z).

4. Unable to Backspace out of the 'General' settings screen (you must use Escape).

5. Whenever i try to use the 'Recognize' feature, i get the attached error message ('The folder is not under any media share'). I assume this is related to the fact that this media source is marked Private, but i can't test right now, as i said, because doing so will probably crash my computer. I think i should be able to correct the meta-data regardless of whether the source is currently marked Private.

6. Unicode still doesn't work in file paths, as you can see in the same screen-shot.

7. boxee still can't render thumb-nails for OGM files.

8. Selecting a video in boxee forces you into full-screen even when you're in windowed mode. You must go back into windowed mode manually every single time you play a video.

9. boxee has difficulty updating folder icons. If i add a folder.jpg to a directory, boxee will dutifully display it as the folder icon... however, if i change or remove that folder.jpg file, boxee doesn't update. Not even a restart will fix this. It has no trouble responding to file-name changes and the like, so i'm not sure what the issue here is. Caching problem maybe? boxee should 'pay more attention' to folder.jpg updates, or at least offer an option for manually updating them (similar to the 'Recognize' feature i guess).

Aaand, some usability/features issues:

10. Video volume is still incredibly low compared to VLC.

11. boxee still takes over the entire Apple Remote regardless of what application you're in. For example, if i have 'Always running' enabled in boxee, i can no longer use the Apple Remote in ANY OTHER program. I can't increase the volume in VLC, i can't skip tracks in iTunes, nothing. The only thing i can do in any program is press Menu to invoke boxee.

12. This new version of boxee re-organises the sources/library view in, i think, a really haphazard and redundant way.

- a. I don't want the 'Add Source' button taking up the first space when i go to watch a video. I can't imagine anyone using this feature so incredibly often that it needs such a prominent position; it was perfectly fine in the Media Sources settings.

- b. The 'My Sources' screen shouldn't show sources... that aren't my sources. For example, boxee shows my Windows partition under My Sources. Why? I haven't added my Windows partition to my list of Media Sources. It also shows 'Network', which again i have not added to my list of Media Sources.

- c. Categories of sources (like 'Internet Music' and 'Internet Videos') should be hidden if they are empty. I shouldn't have to navigate around Internet Videos every time i go to watch a movie if i've completely cleared out all of my Internet sources -- there's nothing there anymore!

I'll add more as i play around with it!

I thought that too. So long as you can get to add sources via the options menu I don't think you need it along side the media.

Hi Kine

Thanks for the great detailed feedback.

1.correct not working currently will be fixed in future versions

2. don't want to sound repetitive..right not working currently will be fixed in future versions

3. Opened a bug report on the inconsistency as well as the spelling.

4. Bug will be fixed.

5. Need to check this..

6. Unicode should be working is the file name in Japanese???

7. Will check into this..

8. None issue we have a work around for this version..
go into settings->appearance->screen

toggle to "winowed" and click "OK" when you get the confirm dialog.
then toggle bak to "full" and again - confirm.
then - restart boxee.

9. valid points ..Need to check

10. Video volume is still incredibly low compared to VLC.

11. Valid point ..The default behavior for boxee service (the remote app) is to always run. that way you can launch boxee by simply clicking "menu" on the remote.

you can change this behavior by going into Settings->System->Remote and unchecking "always running".

12. Again all valid points certain issues I think this comes down to people's preferences i personally do not see any problem with having the option of Add sources whenever i go to videos/music etc i agree that it may not be used a lot after setting up your system but it is still convenient for me than always having to go to Media Sources settings.

Once again thanks for the great report keep sending them in

Its redundant though because you can add sources easily and intuitively from the Options.

Just from a "what it feels like" point of view having the option to add sources inline with all your media just doesn't feel right to me. Imagine if when you loaded up iTunes the very top line of your tunes wasn't actually a tune but a list of where your tunes are storted and a link to add more. It would seem out of place and would just "feel wrong". This isnt that different.

It is Japanese. I posted about this before in this thread (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=179), FYI.

Yeah, and that's why i put it under 'usability/features' rather than 'bugs'. The 'always running' feature definitely works as intended, i just don't think that the way it's intended to work is very useful. It doesn't play well with other programs. I think it should work more like Front Row does — it should give up the controls to other programs that need them; you can still invoke it with the Menu button, but ONLY if the currently focussed application doesn't need that Menu button. As it stands, anybody who uses their remote control for anything else aside from boxee needs to disable this feature, because it completely disrupts everything else.

With respect to adding sources, i do understand the convenience factor, but i still think it's super redundant. You can ALREADY add sources from the Videos screen — just go to Options > Sources > Add Source. I really don't believe it's necessary to have THREE different ways to do this.

(I can't speak for everybody else, but i had XBMC running for 3 years and i never changed or added any sources after the initial set-up. I think the same will be true for boxee once it gets going.)

@kine and @belovedmoster, first of all, thanks for the great feedback, its really appriciated!

my 2c on the add source thing, and as fellow longtime xbmc'er - i was actually missing add source in the filelist in previous version, and i find it very useful being added in this one. that said, we missed showing the option to hide it, as available in xbmc, and i guess that should be added in the next release.

you should be able to do this manually for now by editing UserData/guisettings.xml, locating <disableaddsourcebuttons>, and changing it to true.

EDIT: no, you can't change this manually for now. submitted bug report.

I'll have to second the audio problem; in my case, I found it barely audibly coming out of the system speaker, despite having external speakers plugged in. When I switched the settings to Digital from Analog, the sound went away entirely.

Hi Kine,

Regarding the unicode problem. I was able to get Japanese displayed correctly thanks to Marcel's help. Have a look at the following thread (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=2397). Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Damien

5. Whenever i try to use the 'Recognize' feature, i get the attached error message ('The folder is not under any media share'). I think i should be able to correct the meta-data regardless of whether the source is currently marked Private.

On an AppleTV I get the same "This folder is not under any media share" issue. The "private" flag does not seem to affect it.

I have tested using smb:// paths that contain the username and password, and ones that don't.

It just seems to be any smb share is unworthy of being "Recognized"

can you elaborate...

"This folder is not under any media share"
this error will happen if you went to browse and tried to recognize a media content that was not added as a source(settings>media sources)..

can you elaborate...

this error will happen if you went to browse and tried to recognize a media content that was not added as a source(settings>media sources)..

It is added as a media source.

The media source is smb://TroyPro.local/Media/Video/TV/

An example of a file is smb://TroyPro.local/Media/Video/TV/Cops/Cops.S01E01.m4v

That is clearly within the media source, yet the error says it isn't.

I can't find a log file on the Apple TV... is Logging turned off?

A (potentially related) issue (I have not completed testing) is that after this error has been raised, I can not play any video at all from that network share.
