View Full Version : Playback of Ripped DVDs, Audio/Video Problems

Hello,
I have a collection of ripped DVDs on Boxee. They were ripped using MTR. Some are full disc rips and others are movie only.
When I try to play them in Boxee, the audio is replaced with this awful clicking/buzzing annoying noise. Boxee only want to play a portion of the movie and doesn't always start from the begining.
I assume that it has something to do with the .VOB files in the VIDEO_TS folder, but don't know how to fix it. All these movies are playable in other apps.
Sorry if this is answered elsewhere, but looked for a while and couldn't find a similar thread.
thanks!

i'm having the same problem too, a loud buzzing noise instead of audio
not sure if this is the same as or related to this post (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=1984)
audio playback is fine when playing from a different media player, such as vlc
btw, although this is the mac forum, i'm using atv version, if that makes a difference

Same viewing problem, but no audio problem. I do occasionally suffer from the captioning bug, as well. I've noticed that the system, when it works, seems to default to the first setting in the "setup" menu--so if it's DTS as the first audio track and English for the first caption, it'll start up in DTS and English Captions; if it's got Spanish as the first audio one, it'll start up in Spanish. I get that for audio, but I would expect it to default to no captions.
The same bug exists in some XBMC derivatives (Plex suffers from it, as well), so I'm assuming it's a legacy bug.

The audio is due to the video output settings...when viewing the vido hit menu, Audio, and change Audio output from Digital to Analog if you are using an analog connection, or change it from analog to digital if you are using optical/coaxial digital connections.
As far as the video, it may be too high a bit rate or something like that...what movies are you trying to play? Are they 720P or 1080P?

unisonband- thank you so much! you fixed my audio problem!
still having the video problem of boxee only playing a chunk of the ripped DVD. you asked about the bitrate of the dvd, i assume it is a variable rate. but is just a straight rip from my dvd collection using mactheripper.
let me know if i can provide any other info to get the video issue worked out and thanks again for your help!

I haven't really tried watching enough dvds in boxee to try to discern a pattern, but some dvd's play back glitchy, some play back fine.

There's another thread that some of you may find relevant
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=1407
Basically part of the problem is that Boxee doesn't recognise that it should set the VIDEO_TS.IFO file not one of the VOB files as the file to open when playing the DVD.
Another issue that I have found is that sometimes the dvd menu won't work at all even when you watch the video via the VIDEO_TS.IFO file.
If you just want to watch the video you can use the free software MyDVDEdit to set the DVD to default to playing the main title and then to stop afterwards. The problem I've found is that Boxee always adds back in the incorrect vob file as an option to choose when watching a movie no matter how often I try and remove it.
