View Full Version : Ubuntu 8.04 as Sun xVM VirtualBox, slow, CPU question

I just flawlessly installed Boxee on virtual Ubuntu 8.04 running via Sun xVM VirtualBox on Windows XP Pro host. Hardware of the host is old dual Athlon with 2GB memory and nV 6800 video. It works! It is painfully slow, though. Even for ordinary menu operations.
My related question is what is CPU doing when Boxee is simply sitting idle? Because it keeps my CPU at 100% even in such state. Would one experience similar performance on real hardware?

It works! It is painfully slow, though. Even for ordinary menu operations.Boxee requires OpenGL hardware acceleration on a GPU for all graphic rendering (otherwise it will run all OpenGL commands through software emulation on the CPU), a virtual machine does not offer OpenGL hardware acceleration and that is why Boxee will run extremely slow and use 100% of the CPU.

The only reason for running Boxee under a virtual machine would be developing, not actually end-user usage.

i agree with @gs17. i have the same setup on my macbook. its not as slow as @dusanmal reports for menuing etc., but video is a couple of fps at best.
