I suggest that Team Boxee or someone else should look into port XBMC (http://xbmc.org)'s Vortex visualization from Direct3D/DirectX to OpenGL to make it work in Boxee for all platforms.
http://sourceforge.net/svn/?group_id=87054

Vorex allows for very advanced (yet simple to make) presets, which should also let more users from the Boxee community to get involved with customization and tweaking of such visualizations for Boxee.

Any volunteer(s)?

PS! You do not need to write source code in order to make a preset for the Vortex visualization, see:
http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=Vortex_Visualization_Development

Also see these two topics that are stickys in the XBMC Community Forum:
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22415
and:

Vortex presets work similar to that of Milkdrop presets (http://www.milkdrop.co.uk) but are more flexible if I understand correct.
