Hey guys

I was wondering:

Boxee should run on linux.
Linux can run on a ps3

Thus Boxee could in theory run on a Ps3?

I'm not aware of a Ubuntu distro for the PS3, but this should work right?

There is no 3D hardware acceleration driver/library for PlayStation 3 Linux, and XBMC would first also have to be posted to PPC (PowerPC), see:

Yeah, it looks like both my boxes aren't boxee friendly yet as they'd both need PowerPC installs. :(

So yeah, either PS3 or G5 compatilibity please and thank you!

This is a very cool bit of coding (just saw it on episode #258 of DLTV). You have my vote for YellowDog Linux (&/or) the PlayStation 3. :D

No offense intended but perhaps we should put the PS3 requests threads to sleep.. Its a huge technical challenge that would keep the programmers working on ports instead of core features.. IMO...

1) The PS3 doesn't provide direct hardware access, Linux runs in a virtual Machine so you don't have access to most of what makes the PS3 great.
2) Memory is limited to 256mb (half of 512mb is lost to the Hypervisor) so you will page to disk when playing any decent sized movie (HD didn't run in my research)
3) IMO many users who would like to run Boxee on their PS3s would probably not have the skills to install & maintain a Linux machine.

Read these articles by IBM (the people who made the Cell arch with Sony) and you will quickly see that the PS3 is a terrible general computer (although it's a amazing gaming machine)..

Part 1:

Finally this article does a great job of explaining the problems of running Linux on the PS3 (written Oct 2008)

Well... perhaps atleast someday in the future they'll give us the option to stream our media from Boxee to our Xbox 360's and PS3s. I'd miss the Boxee interface though but atleast I'd be able to browse through my movies, music, and pictures. The internet video streams would be awesome to have as well.

Who knows though, Perhaps Boxee could also get a web interface? Then we could log onto it over the PS3 or Wii's webbrowser and access our media that way. That'd eliminate the need for someone to be knowledgeable enough to not only install Linux on their PS3 but also eliminate the need for someone to be knowledgeable enough to maintain linux. A web interface could also still give us a simular interface to how Boxee looks.

to share your videos from a computer running boxee to an xbox or ps3, enable the upnp server: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=3961

Is there a reason boxee couldn't run from a blu-ray disc, the way netflix for ps3 works?

Has anyone tried using Boxee as a UPnP server for the PS3? I'd be curious to know what worked and what it's like. Might be getting a PS3 in the near future.

I think what'd be REALLY cool (which may well have been discussed to death already, excuse me if it has) is a Boxee web interface, so you could theoretically get a watered-down Boxee experience from the PS3's browser, or your iPhone's browser, or any web-enabled console or device....
