I briefly searched the forums and did not see anyone make mention of this yet, but I'm having issue with Ubuntu 8.04 running any 'effects' in the desktop settings while running Boxee at the same time. This isn't anything critical but just something I noticed that needs to be disabled before effectively running Boxee. The fullscreen mode will keep popping in and out and asking for you to push TAB to get back into the fullscreen mode. Until I disable all compiz built in effects this doesn't stop.

Just thought I'd make someone aware. Love the project, can't wait for the release candidate.

hi there, yep, we are well aware (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=137&highlight=compiz) of this.

haven't looked at how to work around this, but seemingly this is a pretty common issue (http://www.google.co.il/search?q=sdl+compiz&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a) when using the infra we are.

I have disabled all Compiz effects on my Ubuntu 8.04 box (effects set to "None"). After that I was able to get boxee running but if I do go from fullscreen to windowed mode and then back again it slows to a crawl like maybe 100x slower in GUI response (however music keeps playing). Unfortunately the "\" key is just above "Return" and that seems to make the fullscreen/window switch too (as well as Tab) so if I get into windowed mode I have to rember to Exit and restart. I may just edit the keymap file for now and disable this switch!

I also need to disable compiz fusion.

It might be because of the bad ATI drivers for linux at the moment (they don't play nice with opengl).

Guys this may be unique to me, but I found out that what caused the issue for me was the fact that I was running a wubi install of Ubuntu. I went over to a friends house who is also an alpha tester and his Boxee install worked great with no problems and full effects on within Ubuntu. But hes also running a pure install on the drive, and not a semi virtualized wubi. We both have nVidia 8800 GTs and dual core intels with 4gb of ram, and are both running Vista Ultimate so hardware was never an issue, nor Ubuntu settings because both our Ubuntu installs were 8.0.4.1 32bit.

You should try to install the compiz-settings manager through the synaptics, since I have been fighting with the wi-fi card, I am as tired as the Devil since we learned to sin, so I won't be able to tell the exact "sudo apt-get install" line, but I think you can find the settings manager in Synaptic's.

So when you have installed it, you should go to Utility menu, and then check the box at the Video Playback.

I don't know if this is really going to fix it, but its my 2 cents.
