So, I finally got this robust piece of software to compile on Arch Linux.. Unfourtianately, it does not appear to want to run..

When I load Boxee, the screen just goes black and flickers, then returns to the desktop. Also, my mouse appears to not work afterwards...
Thoughts? I'd love to get a PKGBUILD out soon :)

EDIT: Also, when I run it, it complains about the XBMC_HOME variable not being set... Is this perhaps the cause?

first things first, to get your mouse back, build this (i call it "gm3b - give me my mouse back"):

next: its starting up the Emergency Console, meaning it can't find something and goes into panic mode.

see in the begining its trying to create the environment and fails (CopyFile, cant open file </us...). ./configure --prefix= to somewhere it can write to, or do set XBMC_HOME to somewhere it can write to.

Good news! I managed to build a PKGBUILD for Boxee, and it compiles 100% flawless! However, you have to compile a custom python24 (Nothing fancy, just a few more configure parameters to let Boxee run right. When I get Boxee to run, and a few more kinks out, I'll start hosting prebuilt 32 bit binaries, and the PKGBUILDS (with the non OSS libBoxee (Correct?) ) I'm not sure how well it will compile on 64 bit.... But alas, it works :)

anything in the xbmc.log? please enable debug logging, and run again

The only quirk I had was to run as root. I'm not sure how you got it to automatically use the current running users .dir as the config dir, but if you tell me how, I feel that would help a lot :).

I'm trying to compile boxee on gentoo and I'm at about the same point you are bizthepirate. Boxee starts up but crashes while trying to login with a valid user name and password.

I'm building 0.9.2928 and had to jump through a few hoops to get it to compile, but when I make install, it doesn't install boxee properly, it just tries to install xmbc. So I ended up having to copy all the files over manually. How is it that your build log seems to show boxee being installed properly? Did you get the source from svn or update it somehow before building.

this is basically what I'm doing

tar -xvjf boxee-alpha-src.0.9.2928.tar.bz2
cd boxee-src-alpha
autoconf
./configure -prefix=/usr/boxee --mandir=/usr/share/man
make
ln -s UserData userdata
touch xbmc.bin
make install
but make install puts xbmc in /usr/boxee/share/xbmc, so i have to copy over everything manually from boxee-src-alpha to /usr/boxee. Now that I think of it, even running make install at all is probably a waste of time.

anyway.. Any help figuring this out would be greatly appreciated.

@zerodiv: In the trunk/debian folder there is an install script in which helps generate a package for ubuntu. With a bit of tweaking, you can get that to work, which creates a clean install for boxee. Also, make sure the prefix is set to /usr/boxee... Alas, my arch linux computer crashed, and I haven't had time to reset it back up, but, I had discovered that there were still some dependacy issues that I had not settled, and perhaps that was the reason for it not running (xml-something wasn't there, or something like that). I will try to post back ASAP I get it running again, and let's hope it works :). Also, it does not compile on Ibex, so, does it really compile on anything? My last install complained of not have a RSSFeeds.xml file or something, and that seemed to crash it....

Unfourtinately, that's as far as I got. Can you try running in gdb and see if that enlightens you anymore? I honestly haven't a clue what's going wrong.... Perhaps future updates will help :)? Oh, do you have any idea if this will compile and run on Hardy? I know there's a binary for it, but perhaps there's a quirk that we aren't doing.....

Hi,

I followed by your recommendations to build Boxee under Fedora 9. Compilation process finishes without any errors. But xbmc.bin is not created. As result make install gives following error:

Any suggestions will be very appreciated!

Sure. But I found other article about building Boxee under openSUSE (http://linux.amazingdev.com/blog/archives/000918.html). Actually it should be run some script instead of make install. That approach is working. I was able to build Boxee under Fedora 10. But there is a problem with playback. It's showed as fast forward. The same with XBMC.

I found an old thread with PKGBUILD's for Arch x86 (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=998), flash playback is broken but it does compile and run (I'm not sure if it still works with the latest versions though)

@nite-man: Are you using Pulse Audio, or something other than ALSA? That tended to cause the fast-forward playing, assuming there's no sound...
