View Full Version : Netflix streaming - Do you have it working?

Has anyone out there gotten an acceptable use of the Netflix streaming?
The UI of the browser is gorgeous, I love it. But the streaming seems worthless. I'm just curious if ANYONE has gotten it to work like it probably* should.
* as in, launching, starting, and streaming withOUT stutter or framerate problems with a visual clarity that is even worth watching.

For me the netflix stream stutters too much to make it watchable. Picture quality is OK - but I dont think it is as good as on my xbox.
Totally agree with you about the browser interface, very easy to use and looks good too.
So I need the xbox streaming capability with boxee's user interface and Ill be a very happy netflix subscriber!

I get everything but the playback. I can browse and search. It pulls up my queue beautifully. The UI is great.
Tested in Firefox w/Silverlight and plays great.
However, when I actually tell it to play in Boxee, I get:
Movie playing failed.
Connection error.
Setup:

I'm running this on a 2.6 Ghz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro running 10.5, 2 GB RAM. My experience today has been from the network at the University I work at. Just did Speedtest.net and my throughput from Orem, UT to San Francisco was ~85 Mbps (that's not a typo) down and 15 Mbps up. Netflix stutters like mad. Audio is fine, video quality is very low and the framerate is 5 maybe 10 frames per second.

Yeah, Netflix is choppy... wasn't choppy while Netflixing thru Safari. Picture resolution is not as good as a Safari/browser window on "full screen" mode.
Another issue: I watched the beginning of a movie to see how Boxee handled it. I didn't finish the movie. Using the Apple remote, I hit STOP, then quit Boxee. When i went to stream a Netflix movie through Safari, Netflix told me that I was already streaming another movie and I had to quit it to stream another movie. I went back into boxee and trid to fast forward, etc... no avail.
I called Netflix tech to ask if there was a way to manually reset it. The guy said that whatever device I use to watch a movie has to "report a stop" to the Netflix server, otherwise it doesn't know that I have stopped (he knew what Boxee was). The guy said that the Netflix server will by default, reset that "stop" after two hours of the beginning activity.
HTH crunching bugs :)
Thanks for Boxee :)

MBP Unibody, 4GB Ram , 2.53 Intel Core2Duo, .n network running at 300mb/s with only 1 computer using the wireless and full strength bars in menu on airport icon. I have tried it with my MacBookPro (2.4 C2D, 4 GB Ram) and MacMini (1.67 Ghz C2D, 1 GB RAM). Both machines Netflixs plays fine in web browser but frame rate is really low on boxee (looks like 10 fps).

Finally got Netflix to play on my 2.8ghz c2d imac. Frame rate was pretty bad with lots of "jumpiness". It's great to have Netflix on boxee, but as of right now, the quality of the netflix video through xbox360 is way better. Hopefully with some tweaks to the code the developers will get it playing smoothly through boxee.

Again, I need to make a point in my posts not to gripe at the Boxee team. What you guys are doing is just as CNET stated - you guys are "game changers" - I believe it.
However, yes, there are too many frames dropped, and the quality is bad. It's like watching a VHS tape that's been sitting on a dusty shelf for 10 years and then played in a bad VCR. It's at best just a concept in my eyes right now. But if it's evidence of things changed from previous releases of Boxee, I'm still one VERY happy alpha user!

I wonder if there is a connection with the timing of the open release to the mac community at large?
Maybe the coming days will see some improvement in performance.

Watching it right now. Video quality is not quite as good as roku
Last 2 updates of Boxee were the first to actually work for me.
Issues: my queues do not show up... the ones i have on Netflix and Hulu, for example.
But if I can find stuff it plays great.
The wifi scanning issues that have been plagueing my mac setup seem to have been overcome by Boxee crew, and that is GREAT.

I got netflix working but it stutters quite a bit. The sound quality is seemless, but the video skips. Doesn't seem abnormal based on what everyone's experiencing.
I clicked on a video that a friend had recently watched. It came up to a screen for netflix and said that I was not logged in and could not load the video. The error message window closed and it was stuck with the spinner graphic trying to load something else... moving the mouse over the menus didn't work, and escape key didn't do anything. It was there for about 2 minutes before I decided to quit it. I was able to exit the program without having to force quit.
Playback controls are also not working.
Otherwise I'm psyched about this because within this week I got netflix setup on Xbox 360, it was made available for Mac (finally), and Boxee turned on the service too :-D

I can't test the streaming playback because for some reason the Netflix player on boxee won't accept my login credentials. I've authorized boxee on my Netflix account, but every time I try to log in through boxee it says my username and/or password are incorrect. They're not; but the email address does include the "+" character which I know causes trouble on some websites. Could the problem be related?

The issue is that you MUST sign out of netflix on boxee before attempting to watch netflix through another source. Signing out of boxee does NOT fix it. Boxee does not send the Netflix (or HULU) signout when boxee quits.
This plagued me several times before i figured it out.

I was also getting the "Movie playing failed. Connection error." message. I tried signing out and reauthorizing, but to no avail.
Then I thought I'd try streaming straight from the Netflix site, and it worked fine. I switched immediately back to boxee and it was now working. I think following the Silverlight install, there must be some additional authorization it does with the Netflix site in the browser that's needed prior to running in boxee. Maybe I didn't read the instructions. :-\
However, now that it's working, I'm seeing the stuttering issue others have reported. It's fairly bad in browser (on the same system), and worse in boxee. Basically unwatchable in both.
My internet connection seems to be fairly solid with 10780 kb/s downstream and 26sec latency, but who knows what the connection w/ netflix is like. Firefox and bxflplayer-osx are both running around 70-85% in top.
Apple Trailers in boxee on the other hand play back perfectly in 720p. So it seems the issue would either by silverlight, or netflix' network connection.
Kudos definitely go out to whoever put together the Netflix interface. It looks great. Thanks!

I can stream netflix and it does not stutter, however the video quality gets knocked down significantly from the quality I get using firefox. Sometimes it starts fine and then i get a progress bar message explaining that quality will be reduced due to a bandwidth constraint.
Also, the shuttle controls don't work. can't pause, ff or rew. the UI will show that the video is paused, but the stream keeps going.
Hulu looks great so my problems also seem to be only with netflix.

When I play a Netflix selection within Boxee and then stop it from playing and exit Boxee and then visit the Netflix site, Netflix tells me that I already have a movie being watched and cannot watch another for the plan I am on. I'm assuming Netflix resets this each day since it was resolved the following day.
I also have the typical issues like choppiness within Boxee (but not when streamed from Netflix.com) and the occasional black and white issue.

I'm using a Mac Mini for Boxee and Netflix is really choppy for me. I can play the same movie in Safari through Netflix online without issue.
I think there's a performance problem when Boxee is running and playing a Netflix movie. Not sure but that's what it looks like.
Also, for the curious (to see how many frames are dropped), you can view a diagnostic screen overlay in a Silverlight movie by hitting (i think this is right): control, shift, option, D
And you can change the quality settings by hitting: control, shift, option S

So (like a fool lol), I never tested netflix in a browser on my media server. Turns out, it's just as terrible. In my main machine, works fine in the browser though.
Which leads me to a Netflix related question:
What are the real minimum specs to make it run smooth (with boxee or otherwise)?
According to the Netflix site you just need a intel mac with 1GB of RAM.
On my machine with a 1.6Ghz atom processor and 1GB of RAM it looks like crap and is really choppy.
On my 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo with 4GB of RAM it runs smooth as ice.
Should I look into upgrading to 2GB on the atom machine? Or do I need a faster processor? Should I get the new dual core atom board?
Thanks for the input guys and gals :)

So far, I love Boxee on my imac. The aggregation of many of the sites I use to watch tv. I don't have cable, just an antenna on the roof and 8mbit down.
One of the features I would love to work flawlessly is the Netflix streaming, but lots of stuttering makes it annoying. Works in browser smoothly. The picture quality is great otherwise. :(

Let's hope for better Netflix performance in the next (Jan 8th) Boxee builds. From the feature side, looks great !

latest update is still too stuttery both video and audio. Granted I have a very weak machine (Atom 1.6Ghz, 1GB RAM, 10.5.6) but Netflix streams flawlessly in Firefox.
Oh well maybe one day.....

I recently subscribed to Netflix and decided to test out the integrated Netflix feature in Boxee on my first gen Intel-based Mac Mini w/ 10.4.11. I'm running version 0.9.8.4880 and I'm having trouble getting Netflix to playback well. Do I need to install Firefox and have it open for playback to improve? Sarafi seems to handle playback fine, but I've read all over that Firefox is the best option to date. I can't imagine my hardware is too weak?
By the way, my Mac Mini is wired to a first gen airport extreme base station and I get 5 megs down through Cox. I also have a 300 GB ministack attached via firewire to the Mac Mini.
I'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks!:D

Tested this morning :
Mac Mini, 1Gb RAM, 3mbit DSL - smooth after a very slow startup
iMac, 4Gb RAM, 3mbit DSL - smooth, quick startup.

It definitely has to do with the internet connection...
I went home from spring break, and videos loaded up and played perfectly every time. My family has Verizon Fios...must be the internet!

I've only streamed maybe 4-5 things, but they all worked great!
No stutter or anything..

99% sure it's not network related. The choppiness is like boxee is dropping frames, nothing like rebuffering streaming content.

MAC Mini 2 gig dedicated to home theater. That is, NO other software running on this MAC Mini except current updates, no resource hogs, just Boxee and a server app for the PS3.
10meg eithernet connection
cox cable is my isp
MAC audio out to toslink in on a Onkyo 604 reciever
MAC video out to RGB in on a 47" Vizio GV
Network setup:
Cable modem to MAC extreme router.
From MAC router to 20 port switch
From 20 port switch through the walls to a living room 8 port switch
From the living room 8 port switch to the Mac Mini, Sage Tv streamer and a PS3.
I played with streaming several netflix instant selections with no problems whatsoever. No studder, no drop outs, no nothing. Very happy with this setup. Except for rewind and ff remote contorl action, Boxee runs NetFlix as good as my HD Tivo box does.
rewind and ff are not even close to being complete yet. I have not used my iPod Touch with the Boxee remote app yet. This week end will tell. I will follow up then.

I've got Boxee running on my hackintosh and I can't seem to get Netflix to stream (either in Boxee or in a browser). I got the silverlight plugin installed just fine, but I always get stuck at the buffering screen both in Boxee and in Firefox (at least Boxee doesn't crash at that point like Firefox does).
Anybody else experiencing this? Or is this just the slow/stuttering buffering problem that everyone else is having?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
