Hello,

since a lot of issues are not going to be worth a full thread, let's collect all that isn't working properly yet in here. Try and keep your posts up to date so fixed/solved stuff doesn't clutter this thread up. PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR WINDOWS VERSION

I'll start:

Not getting any online video content except YouTube (tried CBS and Comedy Central so far), the loading animation for the video just keeps on spinning and no further interaction possible

Changing the region for weather display causes crash

Mouse cursor movement has some delay. It feels like the cursor is dragged behind the actual mouse position.

I'm running Windows Vista Business x64

This is what I've tested so far using the latest and greatest windows release. I'm running these on windows XP Home SP3 32bit, all the latest updates.

Can anyone confirm what I'm finding? I'll update as I test more

When first loading boxee two dos windows pop up with a "cannot find specified path" errors.. not the exact text they appear and exit very quickly

Working for me:
Apple Quicktime - tested several trailers in 480p and 720p , all good
CNN - Loaded a few news story , working well
Next New Network - shows appear to be working well, even HD stuff
On Networks - Ditto on this one, nice HD .. crappy programming :)
Revision 3 - Looking good, checked out diggnation, and a few other shows.
Youtube - works ok, searched and played a few things.. is there a way to expand the # of search results?

Not Working:
Hulu - Able to see video list , hangs on loading graphic after selection is made
Comedy Central - Able to see video list , hangs on loading graphic after selection is made
CBS - Able to see video list , hangs on loading graphic after selection is made
MyspaceTV - Tried content through adult swim section, and a few others.. same loading graphic hang
The WB - Same sad story
MTV music video - When choosing an album from a local library there is an option "music video" with an MTV logo next to it (awesome feature!). It will find videos from the artist, but gives the same spinning logo hang :-(

Audio Stuff

Audio Podcasts seem to start ok. Once the mp3 starts playing I can't see a way to actually stop it. Choosing the now playing option shows a visualization, but no controls for the audio playing. clicking on the visulization pauses, keyboard shortcuts allow me to stop the audio.. just no on screen displays

Last.fm working well, logged into my account and listened to some radio . Same issue with on screen controls. keyboard shortcuts as a workaround

shoutcast same as rest.. works.. not controls

Same when playing local media , seems to be specific to all audio

First of all... wow! it is fast at navigating and indexing!!! much better than my linux version!!!

- I have an underscan issue. My computer is connected to my plasma using HDMI. My desktop fit's the screen perfectly (I use 1280x720 resolution)
But when I launch boxee. I have a black border around the screen. I solved it by removing the "-fs" at the end of line in the shortcut settings.

- If I go to my video>movies and choose wrong movie to select another one the movie disappears from the database. When I browse the folder and recognize it again it works.

- Selecting a movie and selecting the trailer doesn't work. nothing starts...

that's all for now...

I download Boxee for Windows today. The install went well, logged in, checked settings and all went well.

I add a Video source V:\Movies. This is a SMB share to my Linux system. I exited and restarted Boxee. When it started I could see my new videos but soon after Boxee crashed.

Where can I look logs or error files?
Where are the config files so I can remove this and get it running again?

I'm running;
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
AMD Athlon 64 X2
4GB Ram

Shortly after posting this I found the problem.

Data Execution Prevention (DEP) had to be turned of For Boxee.
Click on System
Click Advanced System Settings.
Under Performance, click Settings.
Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.

It works now.

Tried reinstalling but still had exact same problem.
Tried reinstalling with Eset Security 4 (Another beta) disabled. Error fixed.
Too many alphas and betas on one system I suppose

Win XP SP3
Boxee-0.9.5.4495
intel E2180
2G RAM
Nvidia GT8800

System locks up as soon as I launch boxee. It displays SDL_app in the taskbar, but fails before filling the screen with anything.
Completely non-responsive, and has to be power cycled to restart.

Tried twice so far.

When I look at the log, it contains a few dozen lines, but it is 1 second long (before the system locks up I assume)
It manages to map some drives, find some display modes, and gets as far as "Checking skinpath existence, and existence of keymap.xml:Q:\skin..." and then it ends.

Should we be pasting log files here? Also, I'm not sure if the bugs should be kept here in the Windows section, or in the general bugs tread.

Off for another try.

On XP Pro SP2

Same results as StarSeed42 with respect to Internet Video sources.

When playing videos and hovering the mouse so the control panel appears, the remaining part of the progress bar seems to flash occasionally, like when it it buffering.

Also, upon first launch, sometimes the mouse pointer does not appear. Need to press keys, or put it into windowed mode, then back to FullScreen to get the mouse pointer to appear.

When I downloaded Boxee it wasn't an exe file so I changed it because I guess that what were supposed to do. Right?

Well after the installation I attempted to run it all i got was a black screen with and two command prompts that say "The system cannot find the patch specified"

Help!! i really want to use boxee

Here is my log also: http://pastebin.com/m4a502ff9

I can connect to my account on Boxee.

I can navigate through all of the Internet video menus.

I have problems when I try to PLAY a video though.

On CNN, with short videos, I get the video and audio working, but the video is highly pixelated and very chunky. I played with the settings while viewing but nothing makes it viewable. The settings do appear to change things, but overall, unviewable.

On Comedy Central and CBS, when I try to play something, I just get the spinning "BUSY" icon and cannot do anything other than pressing S and choosing EXIT to get out of boxee and back to Windows.

So far, I'm liking it, but being able to view a video would make it way better. I'll report back as I try more.

I was able to get the "how to add an RSS feed" tutorial video to play, however it died right at the end in an endless loop with the phrase "this is an alpha"...too funny.

Adding RSS feeds kind of works for me. I was able to add them successfully. Cranky Geeks and Tekzilla both just return to the list of shows when you try to play one of them. I got an episode of diggnation to play but the sound cut out after about 2 minutes.

Boxee still hangs periodically requiring an S and then EXIT to get out. Some residual unhappiness as Firefox sometimes won't start and I get the "report crash to Microsoft" boxes. Rebooting fixes it every time.

I have the same online video issues as others are posting about..

But I also cant set up a drive other than C: as a source. When I select a different drive (H: in this case) Boxee removes the "H:" and replaces it with the whole "C:/users/... bla bla" thing. If I try to change the drive manually, it changes it back to C: as soon as I hit ok.

So I havn't really tested anything and got it to work other than the pictures area.. and I really don't have much interest in that area.

But how is that working for you? I know we're all excited to watch our videos on boxee, but this is an alpha so we should also be reporting on problems, ideas, etc.

Besides what starseed has mentioned, the only other real issue I have experienced so far is that when I make boxee fullscreen on my TV (setup as extended desktop) it changes the resolution on my monitor. It only does that while boxee is fullscreen, once I enter windowed mode the resolution on my monitor is fine.

I'm running Vista Ultimate (32-bit) with AMD 64 x2 4200+ and ATI Radeon x1250.

Thanks for bringing this to windows, it is awesome.

I installed a few minutes ago, seemed to go fine. When I ran Boxee I got a windows message that said "boxee has stopped working" immediately after I clicked the shortcut. Rebooted, same deal. Where is the log located for me to submit?

I'm excited by the interface and what I've seen so far that works (pretty much the same list as everybody else). I am importing my media and I have a few episodes of the old TV Show "Sports Night" that got imported as some random old movies. I went to "Wrong Video?", selected TV show, entered the series name, season, episode...then it asked me to apply that series to the whole folder...I said yes, but then the same wrong movie info reloaded and it hasn't added Sports Night at all. Is this feature "active"?

And one feature request....importing media obviously takes awhile for the initial import. Some sort of status message in the bottom corner saying that Folder X is being imported might be helpful. I can tell it's still working it's magic because of my hard drive activity, but more novice users might not notice and might think the import didn't work or missed something.

But how is that working for you? I know we're all excited to watch our videos on boxee, but this is an alpha so we should also be reporting on problems, ideas, etc.

Your right.. so I went back and tested everything I could with the photo stuff. Everything seems to work fine. It actually got me to discover a few photos I forgot taking. ;)

It would be nice to be able to start a slide show with less steps, say from the directory listing, instead of going to the pictures area, then pick a directory, then open a picture, then pushing play (spacebar). (the only way i found to do it anyways)

My build is 0.9.5.4495 for Windows. I'm running Vista SP1, fully patched, on a Dell Desktop (XPS 630) and an NVIDIA 8800GT. I've got two external hard drives with all my media connected. Here are some of the issues I've found so far with this build.

As many have already said: CBS/Hulu/Comedy Central are all not working for me. I just get the "spinning sun". If a given media site is not working properly, it should be easier to cancel out of the "loading" screen. Instead of having to hit "alt-f4" it would be preferable to simply hit "esc" to back out of a failed load. The second half of this paragraph isn't a bug persay, but it would be more inline with users expectations IMHO.

I had an issue with "suspend" mode not letting me back into Windows. To recreate: I had some music (and NPR podcast) play and then I hit "suspend" and then my computer went into hibernate mode. When I re-awoke the computer, I could hear the podcast resume playing, but my screen showed the login to Vista screen. When I attempted to login in, my keyboard did not seem to have any impact. I could use the mouse just find, but I think Boxee may have been directly keystokes at it instead of allowing keystrokes to register into the Vista password box.

Next issue: I had an issue with importing media (which I highly doubt is Windows-specific). Boxee only managed to auto-identify about 5% of my music albums and 10% of my movies and 0% of my tv shows. I think this hit rate is very low. This may be more of a feature than a bug, but it's definitely not inline with user expectations when they "add sources."

The manual process of identifying media that was not auto-registered is sometimes impossible. When identifying a folder full of TV show episodes, none of the attempts to register the folder correctly worked. The movie process worked OK, but the workflow is unintuitive. Everytime I identify a movie, I'm then left on the movie page that I just identified. If I then want to identify another move, I have to re-navigate through the entire menu again. This is a slow and tedious process that works OK for registered just one movie, but is not scalable to attempting to registered a number of movies in bulk.

The album process is even slower and thus not feasible for a library of any material size. The ID3 tags and folder structure of my MP3s are clean (thanks to meticulous record keeping in iTunes), so I would expect a better hit rate for auto-detection of albums and artists than ~5%.

The subtitles that I loaded in the movie "incredibles" was the top-rated english subtitles that I could find, but they started running subtitles from about 60 minutes into the movie in the first few minutes. In short, they were very out of sync. It could be an issue with the subtitle file I chose, but I'm reporting it since it's possible that it could be an issue with boxee.

Some menu screens were not navigatable with the mouse. The mouse was capable of highlighting all items on the menu, but sometimes the "left click" of the mouse did not work. As a work around I had to either use the mouse to highlight want I wanted to select and then press "enter" or simply ditch the mouse in favor of the keyboard navigation. I forget exactly which menus had this issue, but I noticed it on a number of different menus... I think the "add source" menu was one of them.

navigating around the menus when a move was playing in the background cause the application to be very sluggish. The movie playing at the time was a 1.5gig version of the Incredibles.

Ok, that's it for now, I'll report more as I find it... only played around for an hour or so. If you'd like me to write more proper, fully-formed bug reports, then you should open up your Bugzilla to the public (a common practice of all open source projects), and I'd be happy to contribute. Perhaps it's already open and I just don't know where it is.

Despite all these problems, I LOVE Boxee for Vista, and I can't wait to see this project continue to grow! WOOO!

On one of my Windows machines in the office (XP SP2) Boxee crashes as soon as I finish typing my password, and it seems to be systematic.

I am going to try right now here at home, same hardware and software and see what happen.

So, Boxee starts just fine on my home machine but I don't seem to be able to play any Internet video. I tried both Hulu and TheWB and I just get the spinning thingy that spin forever. I looked in the task manager and I don't see any network activity (so it's probably not downloading/buffering the video).

One thing that I noticed is that when I start Boxee I get a couple of "dos windows" popping up and quicly disappearing. The one in the front says "the system cannot find the specified path" or something like that, but it doesn't say what file.

I looked at the log files but all I see is some warning about some xml files missing (that I would suspect it's normal since I just installed and they probably needed to be created), but if it helps I can attach the logs here.

I just tried playing a ripped DVD movie and it had no sound, and the video froze after a few seconds (although Boxee itself didn't freeze, so I could still get out of it). I had it set for Digital Audio, since I'm outputting to my receiver. I switched it back to Analog and the DVD now has sound and doesn't freeze, so that's definitely the issue there.

Also, "Normal" View mode for DVDs is not full screen. I haven't played with every video format yet, but I'd think the default view mode for everything should be to stretch it full screen as much as possible while keeping the original aspect ratio.

I'm not complaining (I know this is a very early release), but I'm just curious if ANYONE has gotten Hulu, CBS, etc. to work in Windows. Boxee people, did it work on your local test machines?

Sweet! That's exactly what I was looking for. Is there any documentation somewhere that I'm overlooking or did you just guess that keyboard shortcut somehow?

There should be a file called keymap.xml or something similar in the install folder.

Also, for anyone having problems, I suggest poking around the search for Boxee on other OS's. Sometimes the solutions are similar.

I'm not sure if it's your movies, but check out the boxee naming conventions. Boxee correctly identified >85% of my video library. Not sure about the music though.

BTW, is stacking (auto playing cd2 after cd1 finishes) working for anyone at the moment?

So, no go on my Vista box but got it installed and working on my older xp machine. This machine has a dedicated video card whereas the Vista is a Dell with Intel integrated graphics. Significant?

My only other experience with Boxee was on an Ubuntu install with really old hardware, not that snappy but gave me an idea of what could be. This XP install is relatively quick at navigating and loading thumbnails and such. Quite impressed for a machine with ATI X1600, Nforce 3 mobo, 1.8ghz Socket 754 Sempron and 1.5GB ram.

Observations/bugs so far:
No Hulu, CBS or WB. Everything hangs at the whirleygig.
CNN video plays but with no sound/extremely muffled sound.
Manual media recognising doesnt work. Tried entering details for a tv show, as in name, season, episode#. Clicked done and the naming wouldnt stick.
Only 5 or so of my TV shows were automatically recognised when I added a media source. Might just be the way my files are named, need to look into that.

Other than this, everything is great so far. Local file playback looks good to me and loads quickly. Have yet to try anything over my network. Looking forward to getting everything working on my Vista box.

I am using Vista 32-bit. The first gen Windows MCE keyboard and remote buttons are not configured yet. The arrows work to toggle between items but you cannot control start, stop, pause, back button etc.

I am having the same issues as starseed as well.

Same issue with Hulu freezing at the loading splash screen.

The uninstall (just to test it) left behind msvcr71.dll and some empty folders, which is annoying.

When adding a profile the prompts just say to 'enter value'

Tab doesn't change full screen/ windowed

EDIT: Tab works on my desktop, but not on my laptop. Both have vista, but the laptop is the basic version, and the desktop is the premium. (I'll try to mess with it more latter)

When changing tracks from the webserver interface It plays the music, and I can see the visualization in the background, but it locks up with a loading splash screen

That's because the windows app is still designed for an Apple Remote. They haven't implemented other remotes yet.

That said, you can control Boxee pretty well with your MCE remote:

Press OK on your MCE remote to bring up the navigation menu while playing a file.

Press Clear on your MCE remote to go "back" within the Boxee interface.

Press Left or Right while playing a file to skip forwards or backwards.

Press Up Or Down to adjust volume

Boxee screen resolution is wrong by default (it's almost twice the size of my screen and I cannot see any options on the left at all) - Despite this it still shows my windows taskbar at the bottom.

Kinda kills it totally for me.. xbmc for windows did the same, so must be something common in that code I guess.

Vista Ultimate 32bit
ATI HD2400Pro
Sony Full-HD 1920x1080 LCD connected via DVI->HDMI cable
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.58GHz

Any way I can tweak it or force it to to use a specific resolution/screen size?
If I can't see the UI I can't really do much :(

Hi,

I've got Boxee installed on a AMD Athlon 62 X2 4200+EE on a Nvidia 6150 MoBO (using IGP) and relatively new drivers (ForceWare Version 163.71 / Video Bios 5.51.28.47.79). I'm driving a 22" 1650X1050 primary monitor and a 32" HDTV at 1360X768 as my secondary.

Unless it is (or needs to be) a Windows setting, is there a way to get Boxee to load in a certain monitor (in the future)?

My routine is Open - Tab - Drag - Maximize... but that seems to pop my primary monitor out of 1650X1050 and into 1360X768. Oddly, I can open up the Nvidia control panel and switch it back to 1650X1050 without a problem, so it's just triggering it, not locking it up. just a bit of a pain, and I'm sure there are bigger issues.

I set my "local Sources" and they didn't load up but I added my stuff manually and it came up - took a while for the music but whatever, it's there now.

Is there a similar functionality to the LIRC file editing procedure for getting remotes customized in Windows/Boxee (on a per program basis)? It's going to be difficult to get much out of the remote side-by-side with MCE otherwise, it keeps launching Media Center unexpectedly.

I'm also having the same issues with Hulu and the like that everyone else seems to be. Revision3 is working, so I'm in that crowd, some fine, some spinning forever.

Besides those little things, it seems pretty solid for an alpha.

Thanks

Yes, under 'Settings' => 'Appearance' => 'Screen' => 'Resolution' specifically... Mine loaded at my primary screen's resolution and stayed at that on my secondary's (HDTV). I had to chop it down to get 1360X768, and noticed that Boxee includes a separate 720p setting.

if it's hard to see, just Tab, then toggle to the left, drill down until you know your on the bottom, go one back up, enter and see if you can see what's going on. If it's a 2ndayr monitor, perhaps do it on the higher resolution monitor as a window (Tab).

Good luck

boxee identifies tv shows using the filename.

I have mine setup like this:

video>tv shows>24>season 1> s01e01.mkv

Boxee doesnt recognize it until i rename the file to: 24.s01e01.mkv

Would it be possible in the future to let boxee scrape it's content using the directory filename.

Then it would also be nice if downloaded subtitles would be placed in the same directory as the movie.

P.S. love this build anyway.. haven't seen my vista desktop for ages. Haven't used xbmc anymore either. Props to you guys for making this great app.

Boxee is unable to index my entire music library. Out of 1162 folders, it has resolved only 529. It loops through and attempts to resolve the rest but they end up unresolved.

The same behavior has occurred on two separate installs and libraries in two separate locations (the libraries are basically the same but they are installed on different drives and one is a NAS).

Did I just miss it or is there no option in the Settings menus where you can force boxee to run inside a window and not in full screen?

A mouse right-click goes back one step...I'm not a remote expert, but you should be able to assign that function to a key.

By the way, count me in on the same issues with Hulu, WB, etc...just hangs on the spinning logo.

Otherwise, this is a FANTASTIC piece of pre-alpha software.
