If you are having trouble finding your media (ie, it's not even being listed), check to see if you are running the Norton 360 on your media repository. If you're a Comcast user, this is the anti-virus software that they give away (btw, it's the previous version of the software, so yeah, it's free).
If you are, you must set up a rule in the firewall to allow traffic through.
1. Launch the security center, and over the "PC Security" option (I'm sorry -- it looks like a toilet seat cover, what were they thinking??) and select "Manage Firewall" from the list that appears.
2. From the tabs across the top, select "Traffic Rules" and then click on "Add"
3. Select "Allow," it should come up with this option already chosen, so hit Next
4. Select either "Connections from other computers" or "to and from other computers." Your call if you want to be able to push and pull files in both directions. Then Hit Next.
5. Now comes what could be the hard part -- telling the firewall which computers can connect to your media source. You don't want to allow "any computer," that's just leaving yourself wide open for trouble. I chose to "Any computer in the local subnet." This allows the computers in my home network to see the shares I've set up. That may be more open than you want, but it's a lot easier than specifying the exact IP of the computers you want to allow, which is the third option. My IPs are dynamically allocated and I don't want to get into static IP address, so the middle option is good enough for me. Hit Next when you're done.
6. Select the type of protocol you want to allow. I suggest just running with the default and hitting Next.
7. Decide if you want to N360 to keep a log; it's doesn't hurt. Hit Next
8. Give the rule a name; I chose "File Sharing Rule." Hit Next
9. Review your new and hit Finish
10. Move your new rule up. This rule is at the bottom of the rules list and therefore comes after a rule that may stop your file sharing. I suggest moving it to the top of the list by using the "Move Up" button.
11. Hit "Apply" and you're done!
This should open your media source up; it did mine -- Boxee Box was then able to see the system. However! Baby steps, it's asking me for a user name & password, and that's different issue.
