You don't say, so I'll ask: on the Boxee Box under Settings>>Network>>Servers do you have "Windows file sharing" enabled? If not, enable it and leave the password blank.
After doing this, you may needs to power cycle Box and/or PC to get drive on the Box to show up on the network.

Yes, "windows file sharing" is enabled in my boxeebox, and I can see see the boxeebox in my network map but when I'm clicking on it to connect it gives me the error "Error Code:0x80070035, The network path was not found."

Do you have netbios enabled on the Windows 7 computer? You could also try access Boxee via IP address -- go to the Boxee Box, Settings>>Network and find the IP address of the Boxee Boxe, then in Windows Explorer enter: \\xxx.xxx.x.xxx (replacing that with the actual IP address of the Box.)

Yes netbios is enabled. I've tried connecting to boxeebox using the IP adress too but it tells me there is noting in that adress to access to :(

Not sure what's going on -- my best advice is you google "Error Code:0x80070035, The network path was not found." and see if anything makes sense for you to try in your environment.
You could also try a factory reset of the Boxee Box. http://support.boxee.tv/entries/328058-how-do-i-perform-a-factory-reset

Oh, tell us more about the USB drive that's connected to the Boxee Box -- OS/format, permissions on the top level folder(s) on the drive, etc. Is it a 3TB drive?

It's a Iomega Prestige 1TB external 2.5' hard drive, with NTFS format. As far as the permissions for folders inside the external hard drive I'm not sure what are they

So this is my scenario:
1) I'm Using Win 7 Home Premium
2) I've Uninstalled Windows Live Essential 2011
3) My BoxeeBox Have access to media in my coumputer using UPnP
4) My workgroup is "WORKGROUP" in it setuped in both my pc and BB
5) I'm computer and my boxeebox are on a wireless network
6) Windows file sharing is activated in BoxeeBox without any password
7) The Drive Attached to boxeebox is an Iomega 1TB External Hard Drive with NTFS format
8) Netbios is enabled
Here is what I want to do:
I need to access the hard drive that I attached to my BoxeeBox over my network so I can transfer my files without disconecting my hard drive from boxeebox.
Problems:
1) I can see my boxeebox in network map in one of pc only, but when I'm trying to open it, it says "Windows can't access //boxeebox"
2) When I'm trying to connect to my boxeebox in browser using webserver it will ask me for user name and password, and I've tried everything but non of them worked
Anyone can help me with this or have a clue how can I fix it
UPDATED: So I can connect using my second laptop and I need to know whats Wrong with my first laptop, because it wont show boxeebox at all.

I am one of the unlucky ones that can't get boxee box to scan network shares. I can browse them, and play everything on them, but the SMB sources (a timecapsule and a windows 7 machine) both are marked as disconnected a minute after rebooting boxee.
I can use the file browser directly, navigate to the source, and then identify every file manually to make them show up in the movie or show tab, but that's obviously a humongous waste of time for something that worked fine in old boxee betas.
I have followed every step (which seems like they should be unnecessary half the time IMO) reported here, and I've gotten absolutely no progress. The box is not useless, as I can navigate to my files manually, but it makes me wish the boxee box had old beta software, which is definitely not good.
I see the bug in the JIRA about the issue has been there for quite a while, and yet there seems to be no progress at all. Is there any hope for this?

I spent a while browsing this forum, trying to get my sh*t to work. I finally have so I thought it was only fair to post my experience.
I already had quite a few network shares set up on my PC before I even bought the Boxee Box. Before I plugged it in I made sure my media folder was shared out. I set share perms to full access for Everyone. I ignored NTFS perms assuming that I would be asked to authenticate. At this point I had Media Streaming turned off on my PC.
(I should mention I am running Windows 7 Professional 64 bit)
So, I plug in the Boxee using an Ethernet connection. Pretty much all my network shares show up on the device marked ‘Samba’ with the name of the share. Great, I think and I select my media folder. It prompts me for credentials which I enter carefully. Access denied. It doesn’t actually say that the password is wrong; it just denies access. I try other shares and the same thing happens. I enter the credentials more carefully. No joy. Bugger. For some odd reason I feel compelled to try this at least 15 times before deciding it's not working. Sigh.
Trawling the menus I see an item called UPnP, I click it and it shows me nothing. I go back to my PC to muck about with the network settings and I discover that you can stream media from Windows but it’s turned off. Of course! That must be the answer. I turn it on and try again. I get exactly the same error accessing the ‘Samba’ shares but interestingly when I click on UPnP I get a big Window7 Media splash screen, and I get access to all my media. Nice!
Unfortunately, when I sit down with the wife to watch a film, it pauses to buffer every 5 minutes, for at least 45 seconds. Totally unwatchable. This seems to be the case for anything in 720p or better. Double bugger.
Changing the NTFS permissions for my media folder to allow Everyone access solves the problem. Of course I only want this kind of open access for the media folder, not my whole computer; the instructions for settings these permissions are below. The important thing is, it f*&cking works now. Yesss.
First look at these network settings:
http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/yechielyosef/NetworkSettingsForMediaStreaming.jpg
Basically the device (Boxee) can either pull media from the PC or the PC can stream it (push it) to the device. If you want it to push to the device you have to turn on Media Streaming. You then access it through the menu (on the device) called UPnP. On my device that was totally unwatchable, but you may have better luck. The point is that you don’t have to copy these settings exactly to make the Samba share work. In fact I have turned Network Discovery back on and it still works just fine (and now I can see my PC under Network on my laptop again, huzzah) so it’s entirely possible that most of the settings on this page don’t affect the Samba share. But it’s working for me now, so I’m not changing it just to test it.
Most importantly, pulling the media from my PC using Samba plays it without buffering. I have no idea why pushing instead of pulling makes it pause to buffer so much, but I no longer care.
Instructions for setting NTFS permissions for media folder (imo this is what makes most of the difference)
(This assumes you are the owner of your media folder, or at least that you belong to a group that is the owner. If this isn’t the case, take ownership before you begin.)
• Go to your media folder
• Rt-click > Properties
• Security tab
• Advanced
• Uncheck ‘Include inheritable permissions from this object’s parent’
• Click ‘Remove’ in the warning dialog
• If there are still any users/groups with permissions to the object click ‘Change permissions’ and remove them all, agreeing to continue when asked
1) Click ‘Add’ to add permissions
2) Type ‘everyone’
3) Click ‘Check Names’ and ‘OK’
4) Check Traverse folder / execute file, List folder / read data, Read attributes, Read extended attributes and (scroll down) Read permissions, see http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k581/yechielyosef/Perms.jpg
5) Click OK
• Do (1 – 5) again for the Administrators group and add Full Control. Apply everything.
• Then share out the folder (Advanced Sharing) and in the share permissions give Everyone read permission, no more.
Initially I added inbound and outbound rules to Windows Firewall for ports 137-139 inclusive because a lot of the forums advised it. I have disabled the rules and it made no difference. I am guessing these ports were never blocked for LAN traffic in the first place.
I also did this afterwards:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SYSTEM -> CurrentControlSet -> Services ->LanmanServer ->Parameters
Change the entry 'Size' from 1 to 3
Where:
1 = Minimize Memory Used
2 = Balance
3 = Maximize Throughput for File Sharing and Maximize Throughput for Network
I don’t know if it made any difference though.

I looked for help - my Boxee was seeing my resources, but wouldn't connect to them. Everytime I just ended up with unhelpful error messages "Connexion refused" or "Connexion timeout" or something similar.
The problem was the fact that my devices are not connected to the standard default Windows workgroup area "Workgroup" but somewhere else (for reasons I won't go into here). The fix is to get the Boxee to be part of the same workgroup as the rest of the resources, you will have to go into the settings menu, then in Network, then change the workgroup name in Servers.
That allowed me to connect to my resources.
I now have one problem when I stream mp3 files from a drive connected directly connected by USB to the wireless router, I end up with what sounds like buffering issues - the music stops every 5 or so seconds. I have no problem streaming from the drive to my other PCs, or for that matter from the PCs to the boxee, but as the USB drive is my primary resource for material I need to resolve this somehow.

Hey all,
I've searched without much joy of finding a clear answer.
I got a new Win 7 x64 computer in February and recently purchased a Boxee Box, after setting up I could see my computer under the files > network tab where it prompted me for my Windows Username / Pass, ok that works im now browsing my computer and streaming my files direct from my PC upstairs to my HDTV downstairs.
Sometimes however when I have my PC switched on and I start my Boxee Box my PC seems to have disappeared from the network. This has happened twice now, the first time I restarted both PC and Boxee Box several times and eventually the next day it was back on the list. What is causing this?
Also I put my videos folder as a source for movies where it scans the folder, identifies and so on. I've currently set it to scan this folder hourly but it doesn't seem to pick up 'new' additions to the folder nor does it recognise files have been removed, I have to manually remove the source, re-add it and re-identify unknown files and this is time consuming.
Regards,
Andy

I find when I set up a share folder through samba on my mac, it shows EVERYTHING on my mac, all files, apps, etc and makes it look a mess on the Boxee. I mainly use local content anyway so it doesn't bother me that much.
If I am connecting to the mac I use Upnp "eye connect" for mac, this works great and works with iTunes.

I worked around this issue by adding the "Network Path" in the 'Manually enter IP/Host...' - The scanning of content isn't 100% but at least all the media I share on the folder/drives' via the network path is accessable in 'Files' on the Boxee Box
Right click the folder or drives where the media is and choose 'Properties/Sharing' to see the Network path'

hi gmd024.
i get what you're saying .. the net path is what used to show up.. and i found it , but at the risk of sounding like a tard.. how do you do a backslash? \\
my path is \\Username-HP\Users\Username\Videos
but i can't find the darn backslash..
or should it be
smb://Username-HP/Users/Username/Videos .... ?

d'oh .. doesn't want to do it..
i tried every combo i could think of
//USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos
smb://USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos
USERNAME-HP/Users/username/Videos
i get Error Connection Timed Out no matter what i do. Really sucks since I've never had a problem, and have been one sneer at all the peoples gripes about boxee box.

well.. factory restore didn't resolve it..
i have no clue.. i still get the connection time out.. when i search for my computer automatically it times out in like 2 or 3 seconds, like its not really looking.. when i try manually it looks for longer, probably 7 to 10 sec. and then times out. I ran a network troubleshoot on my comp and all's well.. and a homegroup troubleshoot. i also enabled homegroup on the boxee, which i hadn't done before and put in the homegroup password, no luck. I stream netflix and everything just fine, and my comp upstairs connects to the internet fine. It's the same router i've always used. Sh*t ..
I guess I'm giving up for today at least, get a beer in me and try and decompress.. ;)

This showed up for me in W7 after I wiped and reinstalled the OS a while ago
I had originally thought it was releated to me re-installing the OS but since it worked for me and many others for so long I'm wondering now if it's related to a Microsoft Windows 7 Update which are released almost every mid week
I certainly can't seem to find a fix for myself other than the 'Network Path' scenario described above
In any case Boxee does know about it and SMB issues are being looked at in Jira - hopefully in the next one or two updates the issue will be resolved

Sorry if this has been answered...if so, please point me to the post.
I have a Windows 7 x64 machine, and my Boxee Box is connected via hard wire to the LAN. Most of the time, I can go to Files - Movies or Shows and see a list of my movies and shows. Occassionally, though, I get the message that no sources have been set up, and when I check the sources the folders I have designated all show as "Disconnected".
I can still get to them by going through the network and accessing the folders directly, but it's a real hassle.
The next day everything will be fine. However, this has been happening more frequently and has now happened 3 days in a row.
Any ideas as to what might be going on?

This is getting ridiculous!
This box has been out 4+ months, and to this day, I cannot reliably connect my W2k8 R2 server box, running as a NAS/CIFS server. Both boxes are wired, not wireless! The boxee cannot reliably see it. 4 other computers do, an older DLink Media player does, even a wireless Netgear media player in my living room does, but the Boxx has only seen the drives on this server once.
If I try to force it by address, it says username/password wrong, or 'cannot connect'
It is hard to be told it is my connection fault when EVERYTHING ELSE WORKS and the Boxee is the only thing that doesn't work, in 4 MONTHS, they havn't been able to make this work ! I am a network engineer. How hard is it to connect to a CIFS Windows share people?
Help, I've been patient. This needs to be fixed, or EBAY sale is imminent!

Hey guys. I've read through this thread and read and read and read some more and I cant get my shares working anymore. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I've had everything set up and working for the longest time (took forever to get it working that time too), and now I just cant connect.
It happened after I decided to switch from wired to wireless. I changed the network settings over and suddenly I wasn't able to connect to my shares anymore. When I plugged back in to wired and reset everything it still wouldn't work. I've been trying for the last week to get this working and I just cant get get it to connect.
My network settings are set up like this:
http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/42/boxee1.jpg
And my shares are set up like this, security permissions are also set up in the same fashion.
http://img195.imageshack.us/img195/2015/boxee2.jpg
When I try to connect via Samba, I get an error that says, connection timed out. When i try to add through IP address which is how i got it working last time it tells me the same thing. I've also gotten the connection refused a few times while trying different things. I've got the boxee set up as DHCP and my file box set up as static. I've opened up my UDP and TCP ports on this box and still nothing. I don't have any windows live installed on the box. I also tried assigning a static IP to my boxee box and it gave me an error that said invalid IP address.
Last night I restored to to stock to see if that would work and it still didn't connect. After I upgraded to the latest firmware, nothing again. I don't really understand what's going on. Internet on the box works and all of the apps including netflix are fine. The problem is that I mainly use this for local files and now I'm stuck and it feels like this boxee box has become pretty useless.
tl;dr My boxee doesn't connect to my shares and I feel like throwing it against the wall.

Windows 7 - "Disconnected" issue on my Boxee Box was due to not having this service enabled: TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper.
When I loaded services.msc, right clicked on TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper and changed it to Automatic, then Start it was failing to start due to dependencies.
Somewhere down the road NetBt.sys was disabled on my computer as well.
Turning it on? Start -> Type "dev" and choose Device Manager. Click tab for "View" -> Show Hidden Devices. Expand Non-Plug and Play Devices, find NETBT and right click on it and choose properties. Lastly go to the Driver tab, ensure it is set to Automatic and Start it.
This fixed the issue of my local - wired - shares being able to be browsed through "Files" but would not actually scan the source. Now it is showing them as connected and currently scanning after rebooting my Boxee Box and PC.

I just had a random smb problem for the past couple of days but seems to have settled down. I use a win 7 box as a basic file host that boxee had no issues with but suddenly started with random disconnects.
My other devices could connect to it just fine however.
I run a very basic home network on purpose and found that possibly after some windows update ipv6 had turned itself back on for my file host.
Turned off, rebooted, and haven't had a problem again since.

no matter what I do, I can see computers on my network (all Win 7) from BB but I can't access their shared folders. When I try to see the shared folders BB asks for username and password and none seems to work (whether username on the Win computer, "guest" or nothing). This is strange because all win 7 computers on the network have no problem seeing and browsing one another's shared folder without the need to enter a password.
I have different issue, I connect to my WHS share, but have to re enter password every time I restart boxee. With 12 shares that could get annoying fast. On PC version of boxee there is a setting to store password but not on the box. Real bumper

In the BBox have you used "Settings/File Sources/Add Sources" to add your WHS -- doing so and enerting the User/PW for the WHS was a one time procedure (at least for me) - and is 'Enable windows file sharing' set in 'Settings/Network/Servers - and WORKGROUP showing in SMB client

I was ready to throw my Boxee Box away through frustration at not being able to set it properly, but after reading this thread I created a new 'share' user account on my host and connected BB using this account. Works perfectly now (apart from wtv files being hit and miss if they will work).

Glad this thread was here. I was having u/p issues with getting to the actual files on my NAS (ReadyNAS Pro) from my Boxee Box, and enabling "guest" on the NAS resolved the issue. My question is--having tried to read as much of the thread as I could stomach--is this an issue that Boxee believes has been resolved? Or is it still acknowledged as an outstanding bug? I really don't feel like leaving guest access enabled on that share. I'm using the 1.1 update and my ReadyNAS is up to date as well.

Greetings,
I am having a connection problem between my Windows 7 64bit and my Boxee Box, from Boxee Box I can't see my network shares on Windows 7 SMB. However I see other shares from different machine in the same WORKGROUP. But when I add the IP manually in BB I can connect just fine.
From Windows 7 I can't go to BB media share \\BOXEEBOX by host name. However, I can go by IP only.
P.S: my other PC can connect to \\BOXEEBOX and Can see my windows 7 shares by hostname without any problem.

Mine stopped working again.
I consider myself to have patience but this is really testing it.
I've used many devices with win 7 ALL except boxee work flawlessly.
Why is the boxee continuously falling down?

Not sure what's going on -- as far as I can tell, the last time you posted on this topic was back in March??
You haven't given folks much to go on in order to help you troubleshoot...
What is it you're trying to do and what is it that happens exactly? What have you done to try and make it "work" again (e.g. reboot the PCs and/or Boxee? etc).

(Just gonna think out loud here for a minute)
Could it be that boxee is not properly talking to..or acting as..a browse master?
In workgroups, windoze uses a master browser that must be 'elected' for the workgroup. If you have one or two machines on your network running 24x7 you will likely not have too many problems.
(I'm not going to get into the details here on how it all works..)
Also..if you have a wins server, or internal dns server with properly registered IP's, then you really shouldnt have 'any problems'.
Could it be that boxee simply isnt playing nice within this scheme?
Rather than calling your content box by its hostname, use the IP. I seem to get the impression (from this forum) that using the IP yields better results.
Of course I could be a dumbazz and be completely wrong.. :p

I don't post everytime it works/doesn't work but it happens often enough.
Boxee is hard wired to win 7 64 guest account is on. Rebooted all devices. Just trying to browse files since scanning is not able to work for shows/movies.
Samba shares are where the problem lies. They work then don't. Checked firewalls on/off no difference.
I have Tversity running on the pc for ps3 streaming and the boxee will detect and allow me to file browse no problem.
perhaps ms updates cause a problem for boxee samba?
A laptop running xp can be browsed no problem.

First post on here but just want to say that you hit the.. ok I wont say it, but THIS is what worked for me. It found my PC, I could go to the files section and run anything, music and videos. However only videos would populate properly in the "movies" and "shows" section. Music wouldnt do anything, it kept saying to add a folder, which i'd tried 100 times. My NETBT was already running and seemingly worked ok, but it wasnt set to automatic. The second I did that, it worked.
Thanks man.

Hi guys, I have a win 7 64 bit and use an external hdd for films, this was working fine for weeks, no issues with streaming to speak of. Then today suddenly I get the "Loading Error etc" screen and whilst Boxee box displays the correct folder (so it can see it presumably) everytime I click I get this error message. I tried to reboot both Boxee box and laptop but nothing really worked. It has been hours of searching on the web and going through a 700 page Win 7 guide book, but for some reason I can not get the streaming to work anymore.
If anyone has any ideas, please share!

I should mention that I checked on the laptop and whereas before it could see boxee box, it now only has an "unidentified device", which is perhaps due to the recent firmware update from boxee box? Anyway, I could identify this "device" by checking the mac address as being boxee box, but it is in the wrong place, it is not in "home network" but in "all networks", perhaps "workgroup".

I have been using the boxee box since the beginning and have had no problems with network shares. I was running 6 external hdd's connected to my Vista computer, and they were all running as shares on my boxee using SMB. A few weeks ago, I got a new, Windows 7 computer. Now, using the same setup, only 4 of 6 drives will connect. Last night, using the 1.1.2 FW I reciev ed "Error: Invalid Argument" when I tried to add the drives. Today, running the new RC, I get nothing. It thinks for a bit then goes back to the previous screen. I don't have the slightest idea what could be going on.

I had some headaches hooking up two 500 GB lacie drives, to share them out. If anyone needs help, and is a Mac user, let me know. Thanks to the people on this forum, I was able to take the drives that were in use on my Mac, and use them on the Boxee with minimal setup. The boxee box shares out the drive contents to my Mac, iPad (via Air Video), and my Ubuntu netbook beautifully. I am able to alter the drives' contents from either computer as well.

Believe it or not, with the latest version (non-beta), my box CAN see my network shares from my w2k8svr box. If you remember, 11 machines in my house have no problem seeing the shares, except the Boxee Box
Bad news is it doesn't see them until I enter the ip address, but until this release, even that did not find them.
So, it sees them, indexes them and then a reboot, even reconnects to them. Finally, after a year, PROGRESS!

I realize that with 12 shares, you probably don't have the same username/password, but what I did to get around the problem was set up the "Default user name/password" to be the most common amongst the shares.
So within the network settings (or somewhere in the settings area), the user/pass that gets saved is used to initially connect to a share. If it fails to work, then you get prompted.
Because I only have 2 shares, and they both share the same user/pass...it just works.
So although this might not solve your problem, maybe it'll ease some frustrations in the meantime.

Hi everybody, I have a problem with playing local videos over a wired network.
Let me first explain my setup.
I have a wireless router CISCO WRT54G2 connected to my DSL modem. My laptop is connected to my router through a CAT5 cable.
My home theater setup is in another room about 15 feet away. The Home theater setup consists up of Panasonic 42" plasma, Onkyo HT3200 and XBox 360. Earlier, XBOX 360 was connected directly to the router through a CAT 6 cable.
My laptop has a thermaltake docking station connected to it with two Seagate 2 TB HDDs. Another WD 1 TB Playbook is also connected to my laptop.
These three HDD have the movies that I own digitally. They are in varying formats, ranging from AVIs to MKVs.
I used to watch the movies on XBox through Windows media center. However, it was cranky and after a time did not play any videos at all. When it does, it plays effortlessly. However, I was looking for a solution which did not warrant me to keep fiddling with it. Also, I keep travelling and hence I want my family to watch movies without any problems.
Hence, I zeroed in on the Boxee Box. It plays movies off a USB HDD connected to it effortlessly.
It is also connected now to the router. Since I now have two devices that need a wired connection, I have the Dlink 1005A 10/100 MBps switch.
Now the boxee box plays and connects to media on the laptop through wireless without any problems. Since, most of the media is HD, it obviously buffers a lot.
However, when connected through the wire, it takes a long time to bring up the intermediate box (displays the play button) after clicking on a movie. And on pressing the play button on screen, it just goes on displaying the looping circle. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it does go back to the movie screen on pressing the back button on the remote.
I have tried everything that I read up on this even on this forum about the SMB shares but to no avail. Sometimes now, all the media doesn't show up in the list even after keeping the box on overnight to scan.
My main purpose of owning this box was to play local media on the network. Internet media is a bonus attraction. But I now am really tired of all this.
I cannot even return this as I now have moved to India.
I really need a solution. Please help me somebody. :(
Update: Well, I tried connecting the boxee box directly to the router again. This time it is faster in all interfacing like identifying movies manually and playing videos. However, it buffers every 5 seconds.

I have followed all the steps in the first post of this thread, but am still experiencing a weird problem...
when i go on the boxee and go to add a source, i type in my computer name, user and pass for the share, and it SEES the shares. Then i click on one, and it kicks me back to the workgroup listing/option to enter name/IP manually screen. It won't actually open any of the shares so i can add them. I have verified from other computers that the shares are accessible with that account.
Weird question, but could it have something to do with my windows 7 being 64bit version?

No, your ( x64 ) W7 is not an issue -- you might want to scan your PC for any instances of Windows Live installs - it's a known issue for blocking/breaking shares on W7 with the BBox and other media players
And the A/V Avast (v6 I believe) has caused issues also

I actually did a little different. I uninstalled Live and then rebooted. After that when I went into the uninstall programs list, I saw the Live sign in assistant. I uninstalled the sneaky little bugger. After that flawless. Now boxee box works as it should. File transfers to external hdd connected to the box happen at 6.3 MBps against 300 kbps before and the HD movies run without even a little buffering.
Thanks everybody who have gone through the trouble and found out the root cause. :D

Okay, so I uninstalled the live sign in assistant and everything worked fine. However, it re-installed itself on the next reboot. It was exasperating.
So I looked under the hood a little bit and installed the following:
Turn Windows Features On or Off
-Services for NFS\Client for NFS
-Simple Network Management Protocol
-Simple TCPIP Services
Now the live sign in assistant is installed and boxee box works fine over the network with no buffering whatsoever in playing HD files or recognizing windows shares.
I hope this helps other people.
Thanks!

I have a home network - have installed a WD 1TB NAS hardwired to router and given it a fixed IP address. It works fine and I can access files on the "share" shared folder from both a windows and mac wireless.
I installed the boxee and it could not find our router wireless - so I hardwired it and it installed and found internet no problem and updated firmware.
It cannot see anything on the local network. I have tried scanning through each of the methods, I have tried smb manual add of the ip address (the actual address is 10.0.0.1 - so I entered it just like that) and for the user/password I put the admin name and password so it got full access. I disabled the router firewall and ensured all services enabled on the NAS. Still no luck.
any suggestions how to diagnose this? I suspect the boxee is ok - its something in the network.

it seems the boxee will connect to the smb shares for a period of time during the first session after a reboot (of the box) but it somehow decays and then won't (stay connected).
I've already picked up a WDTV Live HD because I can't take this anymore, countless times I've sat down to watch something and spent longer fiddling around with this than the program is long.
I bought the Box on day 1 and almost a year later I am regretting it.
Boxee should start reading up on NPS (Net Promoter Score)
http://www.netpromoter.com/np/calculate.jsp
'How likely are you to recommend Boxee to your friends, family and colleagues?'
Promoters (score 9-10) are loyal enthusiasts who will keep buying and refer others, fueling growth.
Passives (score 7-8) are satisfied but unenthusiastic customers who are vulnerable to competitive offerings.
Detractors (score 0-6) are unhappy customers who can damage your brand and impede growth through negative word-of-mouth.

I havent bought the box yet. But read the forums and lots of you having issues with network streaming...as a test, install boxee on your laptop and connect to your tv (use sam LAN connection you BB uses) and see if the same files still struggle.
Lots of other issues can cause streaming problems. For me; if i run utorrent on the machine i stream from, if i do video conversion work to the HDD that hosts the files i wanna stream, other stuff.
Good to isolate the BB from your tests.

I'm not sure what file sharing protocol you use, but SMB protocol was designed for use in a multi-computer LAN, where each computer works as an independent SMB server.
In my own LAN I have three computers running Windows (2x XPpro + 1x 2Kserver), and all of them are working as SMB servers accessed by Boxee.
Similar multi-server usage should also be possible for NAS units (just specialized computers) using SMB or some other similar protocol.
So yes, using multiple NAS units should definitely be possible, though there may still be some compatibility issues involved. I am not able to use the latest Boxee firmware myself, since it fails to access two of my three servers, so I'm sticking with the previous stable firmware which works fine for accessing all of my servers.

hi,
I have now made a factory reset and then a update to latest formware but now I got a problem with accessing my media on Windows7 shares?
I Choose SMB, my computer is not in the list so I have to type in the name of the computer(IP do not work). This will show me the shares that the computer has. If I try to enter one of them I will be thrown back to the SMB menu again(where you choose where the Media is)!?
I have tried reset twice with the same outcome.
If I run my WDTV against the same share there is no problem at all and my other Windows7 computer can see enter the shares aswell!?
Is my unit broken?
note: I have set the SMB Server username and password and reset it.

The setting which can help against this problem is the 'Workgroup' setting (also in the 'SMB client' section). This string needs to match the corresponding workgroup setting of your PC. For Windows the default value is "WORKGROUP", just as for Boxee. But if your PC has a different workgroup name you will need to enter that name into the Boxee settings too, in order to make that PC visible in the server listing in Boxee's "Windows Network (SMB)".

Yes I have checked that the workgroup match and it does.
Then the problem should not be due to the Boxee configuration, as you seem to have that correct already. And that leaves us with some problem at the Win7 end, which I'm unfortunately not the right person to help you with, as I don't use that OS.
Is it possible that you have some firewall active and blocking your Boxee Box, though not the WDTV unit (possibly having an exception set for that IP) ?
In any case, I'm afraid I can't help you with any Win7-specific issues.

This does not feel good, that evening we ended up using the WDTV instead and if Boxee is supose to replace WDTV what will happen if the Boxee shows this symptom again?
Its strange that thay have manage to get a so unstable product to be so popular.

Try to restart your entire network, start first the router, then the switches and then the consumer products.

Hi, I´m new at this forum. I´ve had a Boxee fo 2 months and just bought my second one last saturday.. Simple love it!!
I have no problem what so ever scaning my harddrives and NAS thru SMB.. BUT..
Almost every time I start the box and it´s about to scan my harddrive it want user name and password for my computer. I´ve spent all of the day (work day ;) ) on finding a way, and I found 2 possible way to solve the problem. 1 of them though when you´re supposed to write in the user name and password in the network settings, how does this work since I also have a NAS wich have a anoter username but the same password.
"Have you configured the username and password in the submenu "Settings" > "Network" > "SMB client", or have you merely entered password after browsing into "Windows Network SMB" and one of the servers it shows ?
In order for the account data to be memorized and re-used automatically in future browsing you really should configure it into that "SMB client" submenu.
That is what I've done, and it works fine for me in accessing the three PCs in my LAN.
(Each of which has a valid user account with that same username and password.)
Note that you also need to set the "Workgroup" entry in that submenu, so as to match the workgroup setting of your home network"
The other http://boxee.zendesk.com/attachments/token/kc8glnwvqahahxn/?name=WIN7_share.pdf I´m gonna try tonight is that make a user in the properties called "everyone"! I´m really hoping on the last one to work :)
I will return after I tried this, in other case I would like som help from u guys! :)
Edit: I found a third option
As those of you who are suffering from the problem will know, if you are running windows 7 and sharing your items such that they can run wirelessly on your apple tv through XBMC, your shares stopped working when you updated to the new Windows Live Messenger 2011. (everytime you try to access your smb shares, xbmc asks for a username and password that you haven't set and no matter what username and password you enter it can't access the network share)
I've been running around on these forums and have not yet seen this solution but it worked for me and I'm pretty sure it will work for everyone else.
Please note that I did not come up with this solution I am only sharing it as I'm sure it'll prove to be very effective for everyone.
When my ATV stopped streaming (Because my SMB shares didn't work) I went out and got an ASUS wireless media player that is supposed to be able to stream content. That suffered from the same problem. HOWEVER, when I looked up the problem on their forums some1 had posted this solution and when I tried it, it worked! The solution is as follows:
Run regedit
Navigate to the following location in the registry editor
MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetControlLsa
1. On the right side Double Click on everyoneincludesanonymous and in the window that pops up, change the value data from a 0 value to a 1
2. Double Click on NoLmHash and in the window that pops up, change the Value Data from a 1 value to a 0
Navigate to the following location in the registry editor MACHINESystemCurrentControlSetServicesLanManServer Parameters
1. Double Click on restrictnullsessaccess and change the 1 value to a 0? NOTE: There is no need to "save" these changes, as you make changes to the registry it is saved automatically.
2. Close the registry editor and restart the computer.

ok.. this is strange.. I simply uninstalled windows live messenger and that´s it! No more username and password in the boxee!! Hope it will stay this way!
Edit: no.. fail! Back to the drawing board!
Edit2: ok.. wrote in username and password in smb setting under network settings.. but I still have to write in the UN and passw for the NAS since thats another un.. maybe i should change the username on my computer to match the NAS un!!

I went through a lot of these posts on this thread, not much mention why same issues occur with a Mac OS X (as in reference to Windows Live on Windows 7)......and all of know about the SMB issues with Apple, so then what is the solution for the Boxee Box to "see" shares that exhibit the very same problems that are discussed here? (mostly re-authentication, seeing a share and then not allowing connections to it, etc., etc., etc.)

There's no mention for drives connected to an Airport Extreme and shared from there. I believe Airports share disks vis AFP and not SMB. I have this setup going now and but have issues with Boxee scanning the shares. Boxee box sees the shares but cannot seem to scan them even though it tries constantly.

we are working on a fix to clean up the username/password stuff.
if you go to settings -> file sources and look at your mapped sources, are they showing as scanned? how many files scanned?
re: bluray, what tools did you use?
I have got the exact same experience as you... I tried so many things now I should probably never have touched.... neither on Boxee or the PC. Nothing works....
Cannot access my movie folders or picture folders on my c and d drives...:(

Hi guys,
My Boxee Box arrived a few hours ago. Loving the box but like many others im having serious issues getting it to access my network properly.
Firstly it kept on asking me for a username and password all the time. Removing live essentials worked. shame I use Live Mesh and cant really do without it.
Then I needed to enter a password for every share and the folders were showing 'disconected'. Turning on the guest account fixed that. again not great, im a fussy sod and just dont like having the guest account icon showing on logon screen.
I have now added my sources, but I can only play them by browsing the file structure and selecting the actual file. Nothing is showing up in the Music, Video folders. This for me is a bit of a showstopper. I was hoping something that would play anything I threw at it but also had the usability on my original appleTV. Playing an album is just a nightmare right now.
I have also had a few issues with playing back of videos. Some of the blueray ISOs just freeze and a few AVIs I have play very slowly, about half speed.
Ill spend the weekend trying to resolve the issues I have but if I dont get anywhere I think I might have to send it back. Shame because in theory its a cracking bit of kit.
this was the one I wanted to comment on....:o

It's not shared via "Airport Extreme", it is a network connected device connected and shared via Boxee sharing process via software provided by Boxee. Irrelevant that it is plugged into a Airport Extreme, it's a network device hanging off a router. PEriod. Sheesh......

Sorry if this has been covered...
My question is, is there any advantage/disadvantage to using SMB over AFP (Apple filing Protocol)?
Quick snapshot of my system:
• Boxee Box running new 1.5 beta firmware - Connects to network wirelessly, has 1TB drive attached Via USB
• Airport Extreme Wireless Router - also has a 1TB drive attached that Boxee Box is Pointed to
• iMac with some media on it that BB points to
I'm hooked up to these 2 network sources Via SMB and it's all working well.
I am a complete networking noob and only know the basic differences between these. But as a lay-man I look at this and think to myself "Since my network hardware and computers are all Mac shouldn't I use AFP?"
I know enough to have seen SMB on the BB and realized I need to enable it in my SysPrefs on my Mac, (and maybe my Airport Router, I can't remember) to get them to handshake, but not much more.

That says it all really.
If it's already working well, and you have no strong reason to change it, then why risk messing it up ?
I am a complete networking noob and only know the basic differences between these.
All the more reason to not mess with something that works well for you as-is.
But as a lay-man I look at this and think to myself "Since my network hardware and computers are all Mac shouldn't I use AFP?"
Not necessarily.
The only thing of importance here is that it works well for you.
And since your current setup does that, I wouldn't change it.
NB: 'Brand loyalty' is mostly something that only benefits the manufacturer.

About two weeks ago I bought a NAS driver to store and share media content. In the beginning everything worked fine. The BB found the NAS driver without any problems and also successfully scanned and identified my files so that I could access them through the ´shows´ and ´movies´menu.
About a week ago the BB lost all of my indexed files. I did a rescan and the BB says that it´s scanning the selected folders on the NAS driver but nothing happens. Not a single movie or show have been scanned or identified.
I´ve tried to leave the BB on for about 36 hours and not use it. I´ve tried to remove the media source and add it again (left it alone for a full 24 hours after that) but still the BB won´t find any files.
I can access all of my files through the ´files´ menu and everything plays just fine but I really enjoyed all of the functions that came with the scanning and identifying.
Any suggestions?

Hello I had started my own thread for this but no one replied so i have moved it here in hopes someone can help. I am using windows Vista and struggling getting my network working again. I was able to send files from my pc's to my boxee box which has and external hard drive connected it. Both my Pc's and boxee were accessible on the network. Now The boxee is not showing up any longer. I am able to play files from my external hard drive using boxee. I am able to access both pc's with SMB using the boxee to view shared folders on my Pc's but i am for some reason no longer able to see the boxee in the network on either Pc's so i can drop files into the boxee external hard drive. I have done reboots on everything still no luck. Also in boxee setting i select the network wizard and it tell me i am connected but still can't find the boxee. Any ideas

It's possible that you have somehow lost the Boxee settings that control the SMB sharing of its local HDD.
For this you should check the submenu:
Settings > Network > Servers
That submenu also controls some other stuff but three of its settings are specific to your current needs. And they occur in the following order:
1: Enable Windows file sharing
This option must be enabled (tick in the circle for it) to make it work right.
2: - Share Password
This should be left blank, as the username is fixed as "Guest", as is proper for anonymous access (so no password is needed).
3: - Share Workgroup
This must be set to the same workgroup name as is used by the PCs in your LAN. It should thus be the same as the workgroup name also defined in your Boxee SMB client settings (In submenu: Settings > Network > SMB Client). The default name used by Windows if you never changed it is "WORKGROUP".

Thank you for the reply. I Checked all the setting you suggested they were all still there and are the same as you recommended. still no luck.
Update.
Okay once again i don't understand but it worked. I Had removed the hard drive from my boxee and connected it to the cisco router which supports hard drives as NAS. I can now see the hard drive on the network in my pc. Shortly after my Boxee showed up on the Network and i am able to access the SD card i recently placed in the boxee. This is all i did and i don't know why it worked but it does. However i still would like to connect a hard drive to my boxee.

Well, the networking methods for sharing contents of an SD card are identical to those used for sharing contents of an HDD, so the network settings must be not only correct (as you verified by inspection) but are also working correctly with your Boxee Box (which was in doubt).
The big question then is why it was unable to share the contents of the HDD in the same way, and perhaps you'd better test that again to make sure that it still is the case. After all, one crucial thing has changed now, as you are able to see the Boxee Box on the network and access the SD card from its drive list. So I would definitely reconnect the USB HDD to the Boxee again, to see what happens. All alternatives are of interest to clarify the situation, such as:
Will the HDD now appear in the Boxee Box drive list seen over network, next to the SD card ?
Or will the Boxee Box now again disappear from the network ?
Or will it remain but still only with the SD card visible ?
In the first case all is well, obviously.
In the second case, something is fundamentally wrong, as even a faulty drive should not kill the SMB server.
In the third case, something seems to be wrong with the contents of the drive, preventing proper sharing. (Weird file access permissions set in Windows or some other PC OS...?)
So connecting that HDD to the Boxee Box again should be the next step in investigating the problem.

I'm using windows 7 and I'm using workgroup for my network. It named MSHOME because I'm sharing with a XP machine. My question: In step 3, you mentioned workgroup twice. In my boxee settings the first mention I have WORKGROUP in it's place and the second I have MSHOME. Should they both be MSHOME.
--
After re-reading this post again, it didn't make sense to be named WORKGROUP, I renamed it to MSHOME and it worked.

After re-reading this post again, it didn't make sense to be named WORKGROUP, I renamed it to MSHOME and it worked.
As you've already noticed that was the right thing to do.
There are two workgroup entries in the Boxee settings because one of them is for the SMB server of Boxee (for sharing local USB drive contents to your PCs), and the other is for the SMB client of Boxee (for letting Boxee access contents of your PCs). Both those workgroup entries should normally match the workgroup setting of your PCs, which in your case is MSHOME.
The only reason why I mentioned the string value "WORKGROUP" is because that is the default name in all Windows OS, when the user hasn't configured any other workgroup name.

The Boxee Box is one of the best devices on the market to stream video to your TV, however there are many different ways to enhance your experience about that. You can use Boxee Box in different tricks are:
1.Use Boxee Box As File Server.
2.Use Your iPhone/iTouch As a Remote.
3.Share Videos on Facebook and Twitter.
4.Add Additional Apps.
5.Boxee Bookmarklet.

Alright, i cant see to get the first thing about file sharing on windows working.
I looked for tutorials, tried a few, and they just cant seem to help.
Can somebody give me a few tips? I really cant even start this thing
System: Windows 7 64
Boxee: Last official firmware
Computer connected to same router as boxee
1) HOW DO I START? I shared the folder with my stuff for "everybody". I ran trough a few settings, based on tutorials. I can do it all again, but please, just put me on the right track
2) IF A SHARE A FOLDER, where will it show on boxee? Yeah. Really. I dont know that. I cant find a single person saying "...and then boxee will show your shared folder in xxxxxxx section"

Try using Boxee's file browser to see if your shares are showing up...
From the Boxee's home menu, navigate to files > Browse > Windows Network(SMB). From there you should see your shared folders.

Alright, ill try to narrow my questions
Under SETTINGS - NETWORK there´s "SMB Client" section.
- Do i need to change the "Default Username"? What should i put there? Is this the username of the boxee or something from my PC?
- Do i need to change the "Default Password"? Is it the password from the homegroup?
- "WINS server". What is this? Do i need to change anything?
- "Workgroup". Do i need to change it to "Homegroup", since im on windows 7?

None of the settings I tried (for UPnP or SMB) were working when I had to re-setup everything after the death of my previous hard drive. I downloaded Network Magic and used the trial to have it set my system up for SMB. I don't see what it did differently than I had done...but it did seem to work. However, it seems to be far slower than UPnP. I used to never have buffering issues for local media (shared over a wired LAN) which I had previously set up under UPnP, but now it buffers at least a couple of times during each show or movie I watch, and twice now has been unusably slow. Should I re-set everything and go back to UPnP?
(Everything worked fine when I had my previous hard drive, but it died shortly before the latest Boxee updates, and I had just recently started trying to get everything set up properly again. Is there anything odd about the last update I should account for?)

How could this possibly cause problems? I don't understand how having some photo viewing and IM apps installed should impact Boxee?
I don't know why, but I do KNOW that Windows Live Essentials is incompatible with Boxee streaming. Trust me. I made the mistake of installing it once, then a year later I forgot, installed it again, and re-learned it. If you're having trouble streaming and you have Live Essentials installed, just uninstall it and your problem will be solved. Seriously!!
iTunes sharing also seems incompatible. Lately I'd been frustrated once again that my Boxee file sharing wasn't working, until I realized that I'd enabled iTunes sharing: "Share my library on my local network". I unchecked that option and now my sharing is working again! It doesn't make sense. It should be fixed. But at least I know the solution now.

Hi all !
I have a weird problem with my Boxee and my NAS DNS-320 :
Boxee version : last firmware
NAS Sharecenter DNS-320 : 2.0
Problem :
Boxee Box can view NAS server in uPNP or NFS but it can't find any files/folders. I don't know why.
PC, PS3 and Asus O!Play Live work perfectly.

Boxee Box can view NAS server in uPNP or NFS but it can't find any files/folders.
What does this mean exactly?
Are you accessing the NAS via "Files" from the Home Screen?
Are you trying to add folders to Boxee via "File Sources"? If so, try manually entering the IP address of the NAS (and use NFS instead of UPnP if you want scanning/identifying to work well).
Post more about what you're doing exactly and hopefully it can be sorted out.
