View Full Version : How To: Restore Boxee Box to 0.9

For me 1.0 brought an ugly interface, no frequent media scanning and no default focus to local media instead of the online media that I don't think so many people want in the first place. Local is priority for most people.
1.0 did not bring any bug fixes that helped me, yet brought less functionality.
Here's a list of what I did to get back to 0.9 which is in the boxee box as a factory image.
1. turn off
2. Unplug the ethernet cable from your boxee box. Make sure you have wifi access to the internet
4. keep button pressed for around 7-8 seconds and release and yellow boxee logo should popup
5. Select restore settings or something then restore to factory
6. Let it go through the whole step of restoring and rebooting
7. First bootup process will want you to connect either wired or wireless... connect to your wifi
8. It should go to login screen without a mandatory update
9. Login and you are on 0.9
10. Disable Screen Saver as it will generate a popup with the update and the only way to get rid of it is by power cycling by button
I run OS X but I heard some people had trouble accessing SMB Shares on Windows while on .9. Add the shares via manual / IP way. Make sure there's a user WITH a password. NOT just guest and NOT a user without a password. Again I am not 100% sure about this but it seems to be working for people that had trouble accessing SMB shares on 0.9 before.

I believe you then have to run the device with no net connection, or it will automatically update.

Mine won't let me get past that point. I've unplugged the modem from my router and after a while I get a message that says "an Ethernet cord is plugged in but configuration failed". I'm offered the option to 1) try again 2) switch to wireless 3) adjust network settings. I've switched to wireless, joined my local network but after a while I get this message: "wireless network was connected but boxee can't connect to the Internet"
Looks like I'm in a loop here. Maybe my factory settings are different?

Plug back your internet, just unplug ethernet from boxee and connect to your wifi.. Auto update should not run right away

you require a wifi connection and the ethernet cable unplugged from boxee box. I am not sure why but when you connect to wifi that mandatory update does not pop up.

I did connect via Wi-Fi. All it did was pop up a message saying something to the effect of "Connected successfully to the wireless network, but no internet connection found."

make sure that wifi does have internet access. I use WPA2 as password... Again for some people it works for others it doesn't... for me it worked I guess

Don't sound like it's worth having this piece of trash. (It is looking more and more like a $200 paper weight.) Everyone don't have wifi, so this is not going to work.
I can not believe that Boxee sold us out like this! But I guess this should have been seen a mile away, anytime big money gets involved this type of crap happens.
Looks like mine will be going back, and I will stick with my PC.s running .9 beta.

It's the first version of the first ever product from them. Grow up and live with it... it happens to all the first versions of almost every product but unless you buy it, you won't know/care about it. it has some bugs which will be fixed. how many millions of beta testers do you think they had... freaking whiners these days...

I am so glad I found this, after having the forced upgrade screen with no way to get out of it while watching a movie I was afraid I was stuck with the broken 1.x versions.
It took a me a few tries to get the system booted without the forced upgrade on boot but now it's working great.

I'm much happier with .9 One thing I realized is that the BB is not in fact underpowered as I had suspected before: I find things to be overall snappier running .9 (e.g. loading cover art - which btw only load once in .9, better management of cache?). All this to say that 1.0 did not simplify the UI to make it lighter: it seems to me that it over-simplified it while still making it heavier... For instance, frequent scanning of local folders does not appear to slow down the box (it was assume that it's why the option was gone) and overall, scanning and identifying seems to be faster on .9
Anyway, there are a few things that seems to be broken with .9 though. Mainly, a number of apps are not available for installation. For instance, Vudu does not appear in .9 (ok, it doesn't work in 1.0 either, but at least it's there), which was expected, and I'm assuming that neither Netflix nor Hulu Plus will appear when they become available in 1.x
More surprising is the absence of other apps that are available in 1.0 The accuweather app is not there for instance.
Disappointing: apps that had disappeared with 1.0 do not appear in .9 on BB. For instance, I had hoped that last.fm would be there, but no. Is this still available in .9 on PC/Mac?
And maybe we should start a separate thread to keep track of issues with running .9 on the BB

Eureka! I have gotten it to work. In my router (ddwrt) I blocked app.boxee.tv and dl.boxee.tv. I didn't used wifi, just my regular ethernet since those sites are blocked. Boxee skipped the upgrade because of this.
Next I unblocked app.boxee.tv so that I could log in. If I check for an update it can see that there is one but it fails to download because I am still blocking dl.boxee.tv!
I have left the screensaver on and after I press a key I have no update message. We will see if I ever get the message down the road.
0.9 looks great!

I'm using WPA-PSK. TIA, just trying to troubleshoot. Gotta love powering up for the first time and starting the troubleshooting process...

It's 10:30 pm here and under my sources it says last scan was at 7:50 pm so I don't think continuos scanning works. also if i start it manually it won't work either

I agree and waiting for a fix from BB. But I also agree with the anger as buyers of the BB were expecting one thing and received another. My head is still spinning about the change from the beta to 1.0 and I am just thankful I was able to revert back to the beta and I can understand the frustration as well.
It's the first version of the first ever product from them. if you get this message "Connected successfully to the wireless network, but no internet connection found." it usually means you entered an incorrect password.
However it could also be an issue with WPA2 please try again with WPA.

If I can successfully revert to .9 and that version actually runs properly, I might consider keeping one of the Boxes I purchased. I still feel that as consumers we've been cheated with the roll-out of a completely untested software design, but I might be able to stomach the "wait and see" with the box.
I'm not sure however this is going to work out. That's because the .9 version that shipped on the box, seemed to be horribly broken and needed updating to a newer .9 version to get many things working, including adding network shares. YMMV.

That worked great. Too bad I still get "Connection Failed" or "Connection Timed Out" on my network shares in 0.9, making it almost useless.

I wonder why the SMB shares worked perfectly on mine. My shares are attached to a Windows Server 2003. Maybe that is the difference?

Thanks, but didn't work for me, either. I tried both ethernet and wi-fi (with out actually being connected to internet) and it wouldn't take me to the log in page without the internet connection, just kept wanting to redo the connection. Then of course, when you do connect- auto-update. Wonder why this is working for some and not others..

I had never used that version of .9, only an older version on my desktop. Restoring this older version on my BB, I now understand why everyone was going crazy about the 1.0 update and how much it sucked. The GUI actually makes SENSE, web videos have no fullscreen problems (experienced on comedy network videos on 1.0), everything is snappier, etc.
I'm sticking with this until there's a major update to 1.0

If you block the entire domain, you'll lose all application functionality (adding, starting, configuring, etc).

it only needs to be blocked on that first bootup. then you can restore it after you login. you also need to disable the screensaver

I have a Belkin N150 router, so where do I go about blocking this in the settings?

I have to drop by my mom's after work because she had the BB shipped to her place as my b-day present, so it's not in my possession yet, but quick question -- I just replaced my trusty 4 year old linksys wrt54g with a new trendnet wireless-N gigabit router (mostly in preparation for the BB). I'm not seeing any options to block a specific URL in the router settings, so I'm thinking I'd have to block the entire boxee.tv IP address (67.225.149.139) ('app' subdomain has same IP). I have a feeling that this won't work because I won't even be able to initially log in to to box to deactivate the screen saver. Any ideas? I'll hook up my old router for inital setup if I can block a URL through that, I don't remember so I'll have to check first.
Otherwise, will I have to just update to v1.0 and then follow the steps laid out in the first post of this thread? Thanks guys. I look forward to hooking my BB up and NOT using v1.0.

looks like i can definitely block specific URLs using the old Linksys router. I will probably hook that back up during the setup process of my BB. Thanks!

Hold the power button down for 5-10 sec like mentioned earlier in this thread and choose update from usb.
It took a few minutes but it will find the file, even it the thumb drive isn't empty. Don't rename it, keep the file called boxee.iso.

you don't HAVE to block the address in your router...but you should set the screensaver to "off". What you can do is set a time for the option "Enable power savings when idle" because the screensaver tries to force a download and install when it's over, but the power management doesn't.
You can keep using wired lan; there will be a message in the top of the home screen that informs you an update is available. <RANT>My suggestion is to wait until they release another version that brings back a focus on your local media...and I hope they make the GUI more like ver 0.9 again. That is what made most of us decide to buy the Boxee Box. Nice colours with transparent menus, more frequent scanning of your local sources, ...even the number of movies displayed on the screen is more.</RANT> :) Plus it was "babysitter friendly"

No answer to this? It would be great to know before trying to update. Is there a list of fixes/changes somewhere for this version? If it doesn't fix the major problems with the factory version (for instance, no volume change while playing VOBs of mkvs), it might not be worth it.

Will the Boxee.iso file provided in the link take the Boxee Box back to the original factory .9v that it shipped with, or is the Boxee.iso hosting another version altogether.
Just want to know what the best way to revert back to .9v rather than struggle with the new 1.0v

my understanding is that both are .9x versions. The one linked above is just a more recent version than the one that ships on the device (not sure what the number is for the factory one).

The way it sounds is that .9 is much more capable than 1.0
What was the point of upgrading the UI to a slimmer version. From early reports of those who are restoring to .9 it appears the Boxee Box performs really well under the old UI. .9 with the added features that most of us enjoyed while testing on our computers. Why would they sell the Hardware version with a slimed down UI that everyone was looking for?
can someone from the Boxee Team explain why this was done, or why they arent offering users a simple step by step to update the Firmware to what ever version the user likes.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT... GIVES US and easy to follow process to revert the Boxee Box back to v.9 an "Official Boxee Team" post with appropriate steps and files.

My factory version was 0.9.21.13794. This is printed on the outside of the packaging as well.
Can anyone map the JIRA milestones or changelogs to 0.9.21.14168 or other versions? I can't find a good list of what was delivered with each version.

I've seen some explanation from them directly in this forum. It was also discussed during the launch. It's easy to confuse some missing features (like setting and filtering by watched (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-6980)) with intended changes, giving the intended changes a bad rep. Beyond that, they've described what they plan to change (http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=22313) to address some of the missing features and make the new UI seem less "slim" as you put it.

still cant make sense of this...
v.9 was the version they promoted and encourage every user to try out. To get a feel for. to enjoy.
tagged the Boxee Box with the idea it was coming with an even more robust version of the UI, more options, cleaner, easy to use, more customizable.
then bang....the launch, issues, more issues, complaints, back peddling, and to top it off no real explanation as to why they went with 1.0 (slim)
despite the obvious water treading, and struggle to convince customers not to return the Boxee Box in mass hoards, Boxee has really not justified the decision to upgrade to 1.0
there must be some liscensing, back to door deal with dlink we are unaware of.
we know the unit can efficiently run v.9 and v.9 is much better at doing the things most users are complaining v1.0 cant do, so why not give users the option to run .9

I have been trying to revert back to v.9 with no luck.
I tried the steps in post #1 with no success. When I select connect to wifi and enter my user/pass it connects to my wireless and the boxee pops up a message saying a newer version needs to be installed.
I can call up the reset menu, and restore to factory and but on every reboot I try it always pops up the message.
I have my ethernet cable disconnect and it always connects to my wireless.

Here is how I did it yesterday, with success.
1. disabled BB screensaver.
2. saved the iso file (see link above) on a usb stick
3. shut down BB
4. held power button for ~5 sec, entered recovery mode
5. selected 'upgrade from USB' menu item
6. rebooted
7. done
I have not done anything to Wi-Fi, I still have it connected to my wired router. Nothing to block on my router too. I now have a message on top of the home screen about new version, I just ignore it. Hope this helps.

In Step 5.
Select Restore Settings or something then restore to factory.
I was reading this as 1 step. I did not select restore Settings, I just was selecting restore to factory.
Step 5. It is crucial to SELECT "RESTORE SETTINGS" let the BB restor the orignial settings.
THEN
STEP 5a. SELECT "RESTORE TO FACTORY"
Following these steps, turning off the screensaver, I and am now at v.9.
Interestingly enough when I tried to update using the Boxee.iso and the USB key, the BB went through the process but when it booted up all I got was a red screen.
I had to repeat the restore, and use the restor to factory in order to get back to v.9
The Functionality of v.9 is great in comparison to v1.0, especially when running apps.
To bad Boxee is dumping this version and not supporting it in the future. DAM

Step 5. It is crucial to SELECT "RESTORE SETTINGS" let the BB restor the orignial settings.
Hmm, I did not do anything like that. I listed all the steps I performed. No restore. After reboot I still had my local sources defined, history of watched things was available (from pre-downgrade). So, it was not crucial for me. ;-)

Not sure if anyone has posted this already, but the Boxee did get one update/firmware that was after the factory installed one. Here is the link to download it. Copy it to the root of a thumb drive and you can update to it from usb.
Hold the power button down for 5-10 sec like mentioned earlier in this thread and choose update from usb.
It took a few minutes but it will find the file, even it the thumb drive isn't empty. Don't rename it, keep the file called boxee.iso.

When I installed this .iso it forced an update at initial login. This is following all the first post steps, including wireless only and restoring settings before restoring from USB. I did not block the box from accessing any sites.

I've made multiple attempts to downgrade; Ethernet removed, WiFI enabled. In each case on the WiFi connection the UI forces me to an upgrade without an escape.
Turning the box off at that point unfortunately forgets all information to date, including the WiFi information.
Since I never get past the forced upgrade screen, and cannot escape it, there is no way to turn off the screen saver.
Unfortunately blocking the upgrade site at the router indicates an internet failure, blocked again.
Has anyone else experienced the failure of slipping past the forced upgrade, and found a way to defeat it?

Just had an evil thought brought on by the previous post. What if those of us unable to escape the upgrade have boxes that are preloaded with the .9x upgrade, and the upgrade prevents the escape.

Everytime I reloaded "Factory Settings" the BB would boot, tell me it needs to connect to the internet (I had my ethernet cable unplugged). I would say "OK" to this. Then the screen which asks me to select a WIFI connection would pop up. I would select my "WIFI" connection. Enter my WPA2 Password and the next screen would force yet another update to V1.0. It seemed that I could not get around the forced update WIFI... ETHERNET, Blocking app.boxee.tv... nothing worked....
That was until I read STEP 5 in the directions more clearly. Their is actually two steps in Step 5. You need to "Reset Factory Settings" select ok. The BB will simply reset the settings back to original, it will then take you right back to the RESTORE Screen. You then need to click on "Restore to Factory" these are two seperate steps. Once this is complete, make sure you have your ethernet cable disconnected, REBOOT, select WIFI, and you should then be taken to the LOGIN Screen. Login to Boxee with your user/pass... Bang you should now have v.9 ... Go straight to the setup menu---> display--->screensaver... and "TURN OFF" screen saver.. this will avoid the prompt to update back to v1.0
This worked for me after many attempts. I missed the two step process in Step 5. Hope this helps

I'll try again when I get home, but am certain I did both, at least in one of my attempts.
But thanks for the suggestion ... maybe I missed something! For example, you say reboot after reset to factory ... I've let the box itself force that reboot. Maybe instead I should turn the hardware off after the reset to factory.

2.. NOPE YOU CAN REVERT to v.9 and then once you have logged in. Go to setup turn off Screensaver, then goto Network, plugh in your ethernet cable, and choose WIRED. Boom you are running v.9 wired with no update issues.

I can only say that after I tried to revert back about 10 times following the directions with no sucess, I finally grab the instructions and read Step 5 slowly, then I thought .. I went back to the BB broke down the two step process and allowed the machine to reboot, it didnt prompt for update, it took me to the v.9 login screen and bang I was good to go.

Yes, but there are also ways in which video playback is worse on .9
_It won't let me change the volume when playing VOBs or mkvs (I'm using analog out)
_It won't display subtitles for the same filetypes (the set overscan to 0 fix doesn't work , the use debug mode fix doesn't work either)

1. the volume issue is not at all a concern for me. I simply use the volume control on my AV reciever. No big deal, but if we are spliting hairs I suppose it is an issue for some.. WACK...
2. These two issues I have not encountered. I did have issue with v1.0 running in 1080i, apparently that fix is coming tommorow. Running v.9 I have been running in 720p (which is not much different on my old 50" RPTV) and have not had any video issues.
Yes there are some bugs in v.9 but nothing compared to v1.0. Add that to the simple fact that the UI on V.9 is way better than v1.0, the ability to control local content is way better, the overall look and feel is way better, streaming is way better, speed of caching local video is way better, you get my point.
v.9 is a full package GUI, v1.0 is slimmed down to support upfront online purchase content. If you dont see that and the main difference between that and v.9 then I am not sure what to say.
v.9 was developed for the user, local content in mind
v1.0 developed for mainstream, PURCHASE, BUY, RENT, online content in mind.
That main difference is why some many that tested the beta before purchase are kinda pissed. Boxee has almost done a bait and switch. In an effort to commercialize the product I am sure they had to agree to make some significant upfront changes to the UI in order to promote buying online content. What they didnt realize is that most of the users are interested in LOCAL content.. v.9 provided that very well.

Tom, just set up your box and skip the first 6 steps then follow exactly steps 7 thru 10. Should work fine.
7. First bootup process will want you to connect either wired or wireless... connect to your wifi
8. It should go to login screen without a mandatory update
9. Login and you are on 0.9
10. Disable Screen Saver as it will generate a popup with the update and the only way to get rid of it is by power cycling by button

regardless of setup or firmware version, you have to first log into the BB. Then, disable the screensaver. Make sure that is says "off" or "disabled". I can't remember, but don't confuse it with "blank"
Next, power off BB. Hold power button for 5-8 sec and release. When you get to the factory menu, do not reset factory settings. If you do it will enable the screensaver as this us the default setting.
Now, either do a factory restore or load image from USB and let BB do it's thing. Reboot as per on screen prompt and you're good to go. No need to unplug the Ethernet cable, block anything on your router, etc...
I'm sure the other methods work for some folks, but the key is the screensaver.
Anyway, I was able to successfully revert to v.9. Strangely, I elected to go to the new version as I seemed to prefer it after playing around with it for a while. Once the sorting, search and local contact options are released in newer versions, it should be pretty slick. Just my opinion, right or wrong :))

It doesn't update if you unplug wired ethernet cable and reset.
Okay. Thanks guys!! This totally works and I CAN'T believe they changed interface and are not going back. I found out that "Monitored (very frequently)" option from type of scanning has been removed at local sources. WHY??
Avner mentioned that they were pushing online source instead but really didn't have to eliminate the feature that is critical. Something's very fishy here..

Thanks for the link. I have another media player called "Xtreamer" this one is cheap player but does good live indexing and I've never noticed any missing files for whole time. So, it's hard to understand how BB would have performance issue scanning. I personally think it should not even have option for scanning.:confused:

I had intractable problems upgrading (and I use the term deliberately :) ) to 0.9. Akstar has the solution, at least for me, and I think many.
Here's the conceptual key: The Screen Saver Is Your Enemy :mad:
Specifically, if the screen saver is on, and you boot into an older version, you'll be driven to the (imo, of course) far worse (lots of expletives deleted) 1.x interface.
So ... if you're forced to 1.x:
1. Enter your information into 1.x, including WiFi. Can't speak to Ethernet but most folks say take it out.
2. Go to settings/general (running on memory here) and completely disable screen saver
3. Turn off the box
4. Force a boot from PROM by holding down top button for 10 seconds then releasing
5. DO NOT CLEAR CURRENT SETTINGS. (sorry for the shout). If you do, you'll clear your screensaver off setting and be forced to upgrade
6. Using either USB option (what I did) or restore factory settings (not clear current settings), restore to 0.9
7. Boot into 0.9
The conceptual key is:
* Disable screen saver so you don't get forced
* Restore older version
* Don't get forced
Now ... if Boxee were Apple this would be considered a jailbreak and the door would be closed. Let's hope Boxee isn't apple.
And yes ... what relief ... the interface I waited a year for and didn't get is back. Music is actually usable! I am sooo happy!

Very strange, i follow all the steps as i hold down the button as said many times here and nothing happens for me. BB just boots up normal.

Turn it off then PRESS AND HOLD the button 10 seconds. Logo goes on yellow. Done

Does not work for me.
I hold the button and it still just boots up normal.
I have also tried holding the top button, middle, and bottom.. none do anything while holding down and booting.
The logo never changes from green.

never mind, i got it, you can not use the remote.
* Turn off the Boxee Box with the power switch on the top of the box.
* Press & Hold the power button for more than 5 but less than 8 seconds.
* The Boxee Box will restart with gray screen and take a longer time to load.
* Eventually the green Boxee Logo on the Box will turn red.
* Then a menu will pop up with options.

I have 2 BBoxes - one is on v1, the other I kept on v.9.21.14131 for comparision - after seeing a few things that are missing in the v.9, I'm sure at some point I'll be updating to v1.?? on the Box with the beta version on it
I never let the 2nd BBox update to v1 - I just had it stay on v.9.21.14131 - the first thing I did after booting into v.9 was turn off the screensaver, but I still see a "New version available. Click here" on the top of the Home Page - fortunately it does not go to 'forced mode' where you have to update or power off the BBox to get out of the forced update
The other small issue is... because there's no 'Paring' feature in the beta version, I have to keep the BBox with v1 on it disconnected from it's power adapter (and vise-versa) - even when powering it down with the switch on the Box, the other remote for the beta version BBox will turn on the v1 BBox at some point and then the two Boxee Boxes start to interfere/conflict with each other and make the remote commands act strange or non-responsive
I doubt there will be many instances where two BBoxes are running in the same household with the beta and v1 on them -- but just an FYI in case

There could be legal issues with publicly distributing copyrighted software without permission.
Since Boxee took the ISO down they may not like it being redistributed.

I did not allow the v1 upgrade and did not block anything in my router - but simply forced the BBox to stay on v.9 and this happened to me 'once' - I simply shut the BBox down with the power button the BBox - restarted it and even though I have the 'Upgrade available" at the top of the Home screen, it's never gone back to the 'forced upgrade' pop up since

Yeah, really bizarre. I haven't had time to investigate whether my firewall magically forgot to block the update site, or if they changed its location to a different url. Will look into that shortly. I'm guessing since I don't see others posting with this problem, something might have happened in my network. Not really sure yet.

I'd exchange the box. It's an issue that if you actually NEED to restore to the factory settings you won't be able to. It's in the first 30 days... go get it exchanged

I was pretty much getting along with 1.0 but on realizing how much more I preferred the beta software on Linux I reverted to 0.9.
OMG is it better. In big ways, in little ways, in every way. Far stabler, much, much quicker thumbnailing, can continue to navigate around it while playing music, can navigate away during video playback (although it does pause the video), doesn't seize up if you pause too long during video playback, shows the time and weather on all the UI screens...
Seriously: if I can install the Netflix app on this version when it comes out, I will never upgrade. Unless 1.x is a whole lot more like 0.9 than it currently is, I will keep the upgrade URL blocked at the firewall forever. Crossing my fingers.
It was a lot of work to block it at the firewall using OpenWRT by the way. Never thought I'd miss DD-WRT, but admittedly it's more convenient to administer. Under OpenWRT I had to install tinyproxy and work out how to configure it based on some pretty inaccurate OpenWRT docs. Also needed to add iptables-mod-nat-extra in order to get the REDIRECT capability and then handcraft some persistent iptables rules. Then figure out how to enable the filter file, which is also undocumented under OpenWRT. Still, it wasn't hard, just time-consuming. PM me if you need this info. My OpenWRT build is about a year old, though.

Thanks. It worked perfectly. I was getting a force upgrade no matter what I did. But following this insturctions I was able to downgrade.

I just found an easy way to get around the upgrade. Just after you restore your BB, make sure you put in a thumb drive into the usb port. When it asks for you to choose your internet connection pull the thumb drive out and wala!

Yes, all it took me to revert was:
-usb stick with 0.9 iso plugged in
-no ethernetcable plugged in
-reset by holding powerbutton
Because of all the negative reactions on version 1.0 , I decided to revert too.
And I'm shocked to see the differences between these versions.
I have to say I like the older version a whole lot more...
LastFM app works :)
Gonna feed it some HD content now, see how it runs.

I have tried everything listed here. Even tried the ISO .9 from the link but that has changed to 1.0 and the other links are down. I disabled screen saver and made sure I did not use the reset all function. No joy! I still get the upgrade. Can someone PM me a link for 0.9 iso?

same here -- would love to have the .9 iso, mostly for debugging/exploration purposes.
if this box ends up like any of the other myriad of linux embedded devices, we should be saving the upgrades for posterity somewhere. invariably, the company will remove functionality that some users deem required, and without a proper archive of the updates, there's no way to get back.

I reverted to 0.9. and while I REALLY love the look of the UI, not to mention there definitely is more functionality (I too can't imagine what they were thinking...even if they wanted to emphasize online/partner content more, they could still have kept the look and a lot of the functionality)..i am reverting back to 1.0.
I envy those who have been able to run 0.9 smoothly, and even notice improvements. in my case, there was certainly more lag in 0.9 compared to 1.0, and it even froze on me a couple of times.
In 1.0, the only issue i've had is that when HDMI is seleted for audio, i only seem to be getting stereo sound out, instead of the HD,etc soundtrack (5.1, ...)
yeah, i dont particularly like the way it looks, and I have to click an extra button to get to my content. but at least it works (better)
I am hoping down the road they improve the UI and functionality/flow. but yeah, at this price point, with the dumbed down UI, i don't see how this offers much more value than a roku or wdtv/ asus

Yes that will be nice but I mostly use Boxee for managing my local content.
The UI in .9 is what I and all my family are used to.
Sure the bug fixes in 1.0 will be nice but I feel that I ordered a Ford and was given a Chevy. Both good cars but Not what I ordered.
I know it is forboton to post a URL to .9 so I want to keep asking if someone can PM me with a link to .9

I really don't understand why we can't just revert to the last beta release of .9 if we so choose to. Why do we have to have the equipment that we bought locked down? Just give us the iso back. I hope the gui "fixes" that are coming in "3 to 4 weeks" includes two different versions of the gui. "Simple" and "Advanced" or "Retro". Still though, until that happens I wish they'd just give us the iso. Let me decide what I want to run on my box.

I agree that .9 is way better as far as function and options but it is way more buggy and I cannot get any TV shows to play. It just hangs. I have tried many many times. I then upgrade to 1.0 and everything works fine. I don't get it. I am not running the upgraded .9 listed here because noone is willing to share but the version that came on the box is buggy.
The thing I want the most in 1.0 is that when I start a show it opens full screen like in .9. Makes absolutely NO SENSE why they overlooked that one. This takes me back about 10 years when I first started trying to wire up a computer to my TV. In this day and age this shit should WORK!!!
Can someone tell me what the differences are from the .9 that came on my box and the one everyone downloaded before they blocked us from it? Also if anyone would like to share the downloaded version with me, please PM me ;)

The v1.0 release uses the new web browser engine "webkit" whereas v0.9 I believe uses "gecko". The kinks are still being worked out in the "webkit" version but there are online shows that do go into fullscreen mode; for everything else, you should be able to use the mouse pointer to click on the 'fullscreen' option on the web page -- and boxee will try to get the mouse pointer close to that spot if you give the web page a chance to load completely...

It is the fact that we have to deal with the pointer in the first place. That is what takes me back :mad: I have let the page load completely but still have to scroll (which is a PITA). I know they are supposedly working on these things and have a bunch of red tape to deal with BUT I know from experience that D-link is NOT the best when it comes to fixing and updating their products. So I am trying to decide if I should just return the BB and wait it out and see what happens.

i cannot for the life of me bring up the option to reset to 0.9 ... i unplugged the boxeebox and held down the little button with the 3 lines (this is the only thing that turns it on) and it just goes to the main screen, then turns yellow cause no connection.

What the h... just installed the machine, this isnt what i ordered!!! I have whatched many videos and tests on Internet before i decided to buy and what is this crap? Kiddy grade machine! I'm soooo disappointed! Can't some1 pls download the 0.9 version so I can get what I ordered in the first place. If they dont change the UI fast there wont be many customers running Boxee firmware. They will all be runnig hacked versions or xmbc.

For the record. you don't need this iso file to revert back. Just follow the steps outlined in the first post of this topic. .9 is the factory default. The problem is there were some bugs that got taken care of with an update to .9 for this box before 1.0 came out. That updated iso is not available now however you can still get .9 by reading and subsequently following the steps in that first post in this topic.

I have just restored to .9, but after a few minutes the remote just ceases to work but the clock in the corner still ticks upward so I know it's not frozen. Has anyone else experienced this?

I followed the steps from the first post and i'm back in boxee heaven!
0.9 is SO much better then 1.0
I will not upgrade Until they have the 0.9 look and feel back.
I know it has been said before but what where they thinking with such a big change?!
To me it's like buying a car and at the day of delivery the dealer gives you one with a different color because he thought that you would like that one better....
Who would accept that?
However i do have faith that the good people of boxee will set things straight and that the 2.x version will be better.

I have tried and tried but my box wont give me a restore menu ....
I have tried using a stop watch 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 ,11, 12, 13, 14 ,15, 16
After about 15 secs I get the flashing red green logo but it never does anything, works again after a power down
Stumped....

Turn the box of by pressing th ebutton for 2 or 3 seconds. Once the logo goes black hold the power button down for 8 seconds. Then release. If you hold it too long it will go red. For me one time I held it to long and it flashed red 3 times then green then red 3 times again. If, after turning the box off and then holding the power button for 8 seconds the logo doesn't turn yellow and giv eyou a restore menu then I would send it back.

Also, I was thinking about the .9 iso that everyone seems to want but no one will or can put up. Isn't boxee licensed under the GPL? Some searching around shows this thread where tsella comments that the portion of boxee that was not licensed under GPL would be and that was a while back. So if anyone wants to send me the lastest .9 before 1.0 kicked out feel free :)

I was able to get it to work by following the advice of one of the posts and blocking the boxee update web site via my router. Unfortunately, the main issue I have with my Boxee Box is that my VOB files play back in a stuttering, jerky manner and they play the same way in 0.9. So, it doesn't help me.

For me 1.0 brought an ugly interface, no frequent media scanning and no default focus to local media instead of the online media that I don't think so many people want in the first place. Local is priority for most people.
1.0 did not bring any bug fixes that helped me, yet brought less functionality.
Here's a list of what I did to get back to 0.9 which is in the boxee box as a factory image.
1. turn off
2. Unplug the ethernet cable from your boxee box. Make sure you have wifi access to the internet
4. keep button pressed for around 7-8 seconds and release and yellow boxee logo should popup
5. Select restore settings or something then restore to factory
6. Let it go through the whole step of restoring and rebooting
7. First bootup process will want you to connect either wired or wireless... connect to your wifi
8. It should go to login screen without a mandatory update
9. Login and you are on 0.9
10. Disable Screen Saver as it will generate a popup with the update and the only way to get rid of it is by power cycling by button
I run OS X but I heard some people had trouble accessing SMB Shares on Windows while on .9. Add the shares via manual / IP way. Make sure there's a user WITH a password. NOT just guest and NOT a user without a password. Again I am not 100% sure about this but it seems to be working for people that had trouble accessing SMB shares on 0.9 before.

- It then starts showing that yellow line in the middle of the screen... I let it run 3 times or something then I pull the ethernet cable
- Start with 2 lines to be safe, you may get an error and you have to try again.. just try a few times, you'll eventually be taken to the login screen. At least that's how I did it.
I don't use 0.9 anymore....... 1.0 already has features that 0.9 does not so I can't confirm this still works although it should... It needs internet to communicate to Boxee servers but when you pull it out it can't check for updates so it just lets you login. This worked for me about a week ago

Downgraded my BB to 0.9.21. Overall, much happier with the experience. Especially the "Monitored" media source - hooray!
Just one question though: subtitles aren't working on any of my files. Compared it to Boxee 0.9.23 running on my Mac and it appears as if, on the BB, Settings->Media->Video is missing a "Subtitles font" option. Anyone got any pointers here? I'd really prefer to stay on 0.9 if possible.

Eureka! I have gotten it to work. In my router (ddwrt) I blocked app.boxee.tv and dl.boxee.tv. I didn't used wifi, just my regular ethernet since those sites are blocked. Boxee skipped the upgrade because of this.
Next I unblocked app.boxee.tv so that I could log in. If I check for an update it can see that there is one but it fails to download because I am still blocking dl.boxee.tv!
I have left the screensaver on and after I press a key I have no update message. We will see if I ever get the message down the road.
0.9 looks great!
Ok, this worked for me. The problem now is that I'm back to stock firmware the device shipped with... how do I go back to the version I had just the other day?

w00t!!
I'm back to 1.0.4.17248 via factory restore and USB upgrade. The DD-WRT trick is the only way to get it working.
Then, Netflix didn't work at first but I discovered it was because I had dl.boxee.tv still blocked in DD-WRT. But then when I unblocked it I was getting the update prompt.
Solution: instead of URL blocking, use keyword blocking of "boxee.iso". This fixed all my problems, I'm back to good functionality!

Was .9 the one before netflix was added? Netflix is fine but I have other devices that play it. I want boxee to play MY downloaded media mainly. I want to go back to audible 5.1 -->2.0 conversion via hdmi and tv speakers. Pretty shocked they left it like it was after so many complaints. Thanks boxee team.

The one before Netflix was v1.0.3.
v0.9.x is what the Box ships with.
