So you don't like version 1.0x? Here's how to run the OLDER version .9x that so many people on this forum want Boxee to bring back. (Thanks to metaldog99 on this forum for the help.)

Here's MY problem: It doesn't see my local files! (Boxee program running on Win7 laptop DOES!) And BB v 1.0x saw my local files on the same NAS with no problem.
So I've got the old, familiar UI, it's more stable and has the old features I like, but how do how to get it to see my local sources......?
What am I doing wrong?

Very interesting, although reverting to .9 is kind of pointless if you can't access local content. Have you tried to plug in a HD in the box's USB port?

Someone else needs to guinea pig this and see if you can access shared storage or if it's a global problem. I'd be immediately doing this if I can access my local content!

Well, I'd like to try it, but I' m not getting past the reboot without an Internet connection. How do you guys "trick" the box into thinking it has Internet connection to reboot into .9 without the update?

you can access SMB shares via manual IP/User/Pass.. also disable the screensaver

- Unplug ethernet if applicable
- Power off BB
- Hold power button for 8 seconds
- BB will ask if you want to do a factory restore; do it
- when it reboots its fresh out of the box. It will look for WIFI and you can enter password to connect. It will not force you to update the software (in my experience)
There you go - v. 0.9
I was able to plug my ethernet cable back in with no ill effects.

unplug ethernet and connect to your wifi. mandatory update should not popup

Also disable Screen Saver. If it checks for a new version a popup in the screensaver will come up and you won't be able to get out of it unless you power off/on manually by button

Thank you! Old UI and local shares are enabled after I manually entered the IP.
You should publicize your knowledge in a new thread an accept the love you are bound to receive!

no worries. I love the boxee box but I hate their software direction unfortunately. Waiting for newer version to come out or until XBMC will run on it which should not be long.
Here's my thread :)

Here is what I did and failed:
1. Unplug ethernet
2. Restore to factory firmware (not just reset)
3. Select wifi (no ethernet plugged in)
4. Forced to update to new firmware
How do we get past the forced update?

i'm not sure :( I know that it didn't ask me to do it when I was on Wifi. :S Hope I won't have to restore again, otherwise I might be screwed too

This next try I restored, selected my wifi and at the upgrade screen I unplugged the box and plugged it back in. All that did was make me start over at "getting online" again.
Update: Maybe if someone knew the name of the update server I could block it from my router. Then it could connect to the internet but not hit the update server.

Take a look at the updater details (http://boxeeboxwiki.org/wiki/Update).

Minel has posted step by step instructions elsewhere on this forum. Worked for me.

I sure wish I had one of the boxes where this method would work. Mine does the auto update check immediately after selecting my wifi (no ethernet plugged in). I even tried rebooting at that point but it still tries to auto update after the reboot.

Blocking the Boxee servers at the router level should work for everyone.
That said, the biggest issue with doing this is that the factory-default beta version is old and extremely slow and buggy. It's going to get very frustrating to use it as it's very obviously not anywhere close to a finished product.
I'll try and brave it until another one or two updates are released to see if some of the post-1.0 issues are resolved.

Funny thing - I tried the factory reset yesterday morning for an hour or so. Once I got the drives connected, I gave the remote to my wife. She was able to drive straight to her favorite shows and get it to play.
I would have stayed with 0.9 if I didn't have lots of stuttering of the DVD ISOs on playback.
