View Full Version : MythTV UPnP broken?

Has anyone tried a mythtv upnp connection? For some reason, when I browse the network, I can see the upnp servers (myth, mediatomb, xbmc) and I can see my recordings with thumbnails, but can't actually play them. I get a "the media source or file is not accessible" error box. This works fine on the beta that is currently on multiple other systems throughout the house.

Also, it used to be possible to add a mythtv media source by manually adding myth://[ip address]. This no longer works either.

Any thoughts?

Anybody?

This is one of my main uses for the thing. If I can't get it working it really limits it's usefulness.

I can confirm I have the same issue. Works on my HTPC in the living room but not on the BBox. I'm hoping they are working on this issue along with the other sharing issues mentioned by Avner in another thread.

At least SOMEBODY else is trying to use it like this. :D

I am sending Avner an email on this now. It will probably be pretty low on the priority list, but hopefully it WILL be on the list.

Wow. These guys are on the ball. With everything they have happening right now, Avner just got back to me in about 20 min. I'm very impressed.

THIS is why I'll be keeping my Boxee Box :D

So I checked Myth again late last night and it seems my Recordings are playing back now. Not sure what changed but it looks to be working.

Awesome to hear. While I use Myth on Boxee some of the time, I don't have a BBox to test out how it is working on there. Glad to hear it is working for now though.

Is this on the boxee box?

My BB actually crashes and restart if I try to play back a recording....

If so, is there a special way you set up the source?

thx

I'd like to know the answer to that too.

I still can't get it to actually play anything from the UPnP source. I can access the drive that the recordings are stored on and play them through a SMB connection so at least for me, it's not a format issue, it's definitely a UPnP thing.

yeah I get :

Playback error : The media source or file is not accessible.

even though the BB could fetch a thumbnail

Not a lot of crashes though, mostly that error msg.

Anyone got myth upnp working?

I wish I could say I did something to get it working, but I have not. I simply browse network sources -> UPNP -> Entry for Myth -> Recordings -> Title.

The one thing that MAY have changed is the version of MythTV. Once I upgraded to .24 last week I turned development updates on and it's possible an update came through that fixed something on the back end.

Maybe .24 has changed something. I'm still running 0.23 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I'm running LTS for a reason, so upgrading isn't an option for me. The thing is, Boxee 0.9 on every other system in the house works perfectly.

lol wait until the return date for all these units and then we will see how much gets done to the box when they know users cannot return it.

Hey guys, wanted to follow up on this.

I have a ubuntu 10.04 box and installed mythtv the easy way (apt-get install mythtv). It set up the upnp server by default and i copied a few sample files into my videos directory and was able to play them. So we work ok with the core server at least.

It looks like it installed 0.23 for me

I didn't try with recordings, as i don't have a tuner or a method of making recordings at all. So i'm guessing it is something specific to how myth presents the recording info to us - it probably constructs the metadata from the database.

Just to check, this fails for everyone when they click on the recording, and before it opens the dialog offering to let you play?

Will keep on working at it.

Dan, thanks for the follow up.

For me, it fails when I click play. I'm able to browse the content with no problem. The categories are presented as you would expect from myth. I even see all the thumbs when browsing which verifies the content matches the category.

And again, it all works perfectly in 0.9.

exactly the same as schmedigans

I've played the files directly through samba and the playback is really nice, so it's too bad boxee can't using upnp.

I wanted to go for mythtv 0.24, but it doesn't seem to be compatible with xbmc quite yet so I'm holding off.

Really important feature for mythtv based households and WAF ;)

What he said :D

Another thing Dan, Was the ability to add a myth://[ip] video source removed intentionally? Is so, will it be back? If not, will it be fixed?
The ability to watch live tv in Boxee is priceless, and gives me the ability to put these things anywhere, not just where there's an existing tv with a cable drop. --Thanks

From this thread:
http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=22105&page=4

post #33 is pointing to a repository that has a telnet app. After installing the repo, I find he also has a MythBoxee app.

Trying now... I'll update with the results.

Well that solved my problem. MythBoxee works very well so far. It's still a young project, so it will only get better.

see http://erikkristensen.com/project/mythboxee

There's full requirements/instructions and some screenshots at the bottom of the page. You will need to be running myth 0.23.1 for it to work with the BB, but the dev is working on a solution to be able to support 0.23.0 and 0.24.

I'm not really interested in the app. I need to have the UPNP interface work so I can check other MythTV frontends. I was able to see and explore the backend server from the Local Sources section on a Windows version of Boxee (0.9.23.15885). I checked the boxes for Videos, Pics and Music. Then I added the source. When I escape back to the Settings Local Files menu it shows my server as Disconnected. Why?

If I go back to the main screen and click on the Photos icon, I get my MythTV server (0.23) as one of the choices (this doesn't happen for Movies or Music). When I select the server, I can explore my Music, Recordings, and Videos folders. I can play stuff out of all of these folders. So it appears like it is working functionally, but not really.

Why does it only work out of the Photos area? What is wrong with the Music and Movies area? Why is the server marked as disconnected, yet I can still use it? I'm not convinced MythTV or Boxee is set up correctly, but it has to be close.

Thanks for any help,
Klyndt

The funny thing is the M: Drive and the UPnP are pointing to the same files. Does anyone know what low wdpslow is?

I had been using mythboxee for a while on my BB before the netflix update. After the whole app signing requirement update I haven't been able to get that to work anymore.

So I decided to try UPNP playback and find that I can browse to the show I want to watch on my myth machine but when I click to play the screen flashes from black to Boxee.

I would really like some way to watch my myth recordings! (I can playback my myth recordings from the samba share but it isn't easy to navigate through that mountain of obscure filenames)

My myth backend is .23.1

Has anyone tried rebooting their mythbackend? seems that my inability to play through the upnp method is usually resolved by rebooting my backend.
