I feel like I've been duped! The boxee software on Windows is what I fell in love with. What is this?
There are some things I'm having trouble with - and I'm returning it if it's not fixed soon!
1. MKV files with subtitles - I can't turn them off! Subtitles option is greyed out for some reason.
2. Subtitle setting in general. I want to always have subtitles off. Give me that option
3. Media identification - I had very few unidentified things on the software boxee on Windows. Now, it doesn't recognize ANY tv show on it's own seemingly, and there are almost 100 movies it won't identify. Avatar. It won't identify Avatar. WTF? Even if I go into manually identify, and pick the right one, it' spins a little blue circle and then just stays in unidentified files. What a piss off.
4. SMB Share disconnection. I. Am Cons. tantly b. eing dis.con.ected from my SMB Shares on various computers. I can THANKFULLY use TVersity as a source...
5. Uglier UI - Yep Uglier. And WAY less functional for my Local media.
Please Boxee. I beg of thee. Fix it. Just Fix it.
Otherwise... "The cost is too DAMN high" ;)

Completely agree. One to add is that the blacks look terrible on this vs. my popcorn hour on the same content. Black should be black, not grainy dark grey.
I'm seriously disappointed. :(

I guess it's a bug. Why is the OSD option greyed-out? Quite annoying but I'm sure it will be fixed soon.

I would imagine it is only on certain .mkv files and those have hard-coded subs.
Just a guess but being one that has downloaded such a file in the past and has had no trouble with any others, I'd think the OP has the same problem with that file no matter what he uses to play it.

Very disappointed here as well.
MythTV UPnP is broken. It works perfectly on 0.9. This is one of the most important features for me.
After spending 9 months testing the public beta to verify it would do EXACTLY what I want (and the beta does) on multiple systems around the house, I plunked down my $200 (pre-order from Amazon for what? ...but that's another discussion) to find out everything is different, even core functionality, and loaded with bugs. What the hell was the purpose of the beta testing? Was ANY regression testing done before this release?
I will try to revert back to 0.9 and wait for the system to stabilize. I might also send it back.

For the MKV subtitle option, I had the same issue and it was an easy yet odd fix. They are working on a patch as we speak.
Go to your settings, under the system, go to Advanced then to Debug level. Switch this to Debug then restart system.
Once it has loaded back up, test the video file out. Should work now. Now go back into settings and shut the Debug off (slows down system if left on).
This fixed it for me! Goodluck.

In response to the OP, I think that everyone feels a little disappointed, because we all did get very attached to the interface running on our computers, and we were expecting the dedicated hardware to be generally the same interface and functionality as we had gotten used to.
I'm aware that this is a first-foray for the company, and we are all very much early adopters in a dramatic way. I'm still optimistic that boxee can get this turned around by the end of the year, but... I'm not throwing away the original packaging, just in case, y'know?

I don't have the series issues that the OP is experiencing (or haven't discovered them yet), but I also fell in love with 0.9 and simply wanted bug fixes with 1.0. I purchased with the 0.9 UI in mind.

Subtitles inside .mkv work for me as far as turning them on and off. I do get serious lag on 720p.avi files, though.
I completely agree that the new interface is not nearly as convenient for local content as the previous interface, which is a bummer. Internet content is great and all, but I'm less interested in watching a handful of Green Acres episodes or worse than B-Film movies than my personal collection. I'm sure it'll get better with time, so I'm not worried. growing pains
