I wonder if the 1.0 release was a consequence of performance issues? I hope they offer the option to choose between old an new interface in future FW releases. long shot though.
edit: can some mod please move this to the boxee box category. sorry.

Biggest gripe? No one click access to local media and music.
I set up the Windows software (v0.9) for my wife on the computer, and the boxee software passed the WAF test (Wife Acceptability Factor) so I went ahead and pre-ordered the Boxee Box.
Now, with version 1.0 having to navigate through several clicks to get to Local content (we're outside the US, so most of the online content at this stage is not accessible to us, I expected that, I ordered the Boxee Box mainly for handling local content) the Boxee Box is now struggling to pass the WAF.
Boxee - if my wife gets annoyed with it, it's going straight back (remember: happy wife, happy life) - please let me stall her by assuring her that this oversight will be addressed soon!

I think it's more a consequence of them not thoroughly thinking through the UI design. With the new extra menu layers, what used to take 3 to 4 button presses can now take up to 12.
I think those extra menu layers need to be removed from the main UI navigation paths and setup as toggleable options for each main category, as they were in earlier versions of Boxee.

A perfect review of the UI changes of boxee in comparison to what was presented and marketed prior to launch.
This makes me sad how true it is, they downgraded the UI for the box. :(

The difficulty in getting to local content is a massive failure. I would guess 90% of users want it almost exclusively for local content, especially outside the US.

I'm also extremely disappointed at Boxee in this bait and switch, I ordered the Boxee Box on the premise that it was the same as the current PC version only to have an inferior GUI forced on users. All the previews of the Boxee Box had the older & better UI demoed on it.
It also failed the WAF test so I'm considering returning the box, I really dont understand how Boxee could make such a colossally bad move at the launch of a product.

I feel like the Littlest Hobo. Over the years I've gone from MythTV -> SageTV -> MediaPortal -> Boxee Beta looking for a media centre solution that does what I want with an attractive, simple-to-use and professional-looking user interface. I thought I'd found somewhere I could linger for a while. Ah well.
I must say I'm a bit confused by the changes, particularly why they weren't evident in the recently released beta. This can't be something that's been thrown together in the past fortnight, so what gives?!

I'd like to hear whether there are any planned changes to the UI, if if the Boxee team really feels this new v1.0 will be here to stay and we'll have to "get used to it".

I think that Boxee needs to make web content easiest to target the masses but I really hope that the local content isn't buried. I have local stuff myself and have ordered a Boxee Box. I think I've gone from excited to anxious. It's sad to see such a rough review from Jon Hicks. He's a well respected designer in the web industry with a lot of influence. Maybe he'd have some suggestions for the guys at Boxee?
This seems like it's been a rough - confusing launch so far. I've been a big fan of Boxee all along and have been pushing friends to check it out as well. Hopefully it'll smooth out with some updates.

If anyone at boxee read these forums, you need to listen and act quickly: users are mostly disappointed with the new UI, bring the old one back or you will lose that user basis. I don't think you will succeed without it.
Burying local media in the menus and making it less accessible overall doesn't not make online (paying) content more prominent, it makes users more pissed. The way boxee was supposed to handle local media is what sets the box apart from the competition, you need to fix this or Google will eat you alive despite your securing deals with Netflix, Hulu and Vudu. None of those services work at the moment and with the number of apps that have disappeared in 1.0, you'd better make playing local media easier if you want to keep your customers vaguely entertained while they're waiting.

LOTS of us beta 'testers' were pretty irritated that the 1.0 was not going to be released to us for review before the launch... i think boxee could have dodged a bullet or two by letting us have a look.
fair enough they wanted to clear as many bugs from the bbox version as they could, but they could have at least consulted on the UI changes.
I'm UK based, and pre-launch day, i was 50/50 on whether to get the box - now i'm 100% out.
Its a shame.:(
EDIT: Was just thinking, boxee beta was by no means perfect... the forum's were full of bug reports, feature requests, app improvement suggestions, but never (or very rarely) did anyone moan about the beta's UI. Everyone adored it. It struck a great balance between a great, clean, aesthetic and the minimum number of clicks to access whatever you needed. So why, (especially with a product that was so late) was a UI redesign considered necessary? Couldn't those man hours have been put to better use in fixing http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=21778 those issues? I bet the guy who said "let's re-do the UI" isn't popular around the office now.

I'm sure that most of us, who were in the alpha only, are disgruntled. Not listening to your testers is one thing, but not talking to them at all before a major UI change is something else.
I can see what they are trying to do here. The marketing aspect is for the "general joe" who doesn't download files or rip a movie off of DVD. It's for those who will only use the Internet offerings.
That being said, they are missing a major market with those of us who do. WE (being those in the early alpha and/or beta process) who DO have local content will not want to have to make 150+ clicks to get to OUR files.
Hopefully, they will listen to the complaints and make some sort of work around.

I like the UI but the implementation is what is driving me nuts. I wanted this device to play my files with the option of playing online content. That is how the beta software was setup, now they have flipped this.
How I would like it setup is that when I hit Movies or Shows it defaults to my local media collection. I can then filter this info based on Genre. If I want online content then I will look for it under the channels selection.

why would the makers of boxee think that we would want to stream low quality, unreliable, pay-per-view crap from the net over playing our OWN content saved locally?!?!

The new UI is garbage. It's counter intuitive and is definetly a step backward. It almost seems dumbed down to the point of being confusing. I bought this thing because I loved the UI in beta. I sold my mac mini that was running plex and boxee just for this. I was impressed when I hooked it up before the update to 1.
Can we revert back to .9 with a system restore and then just not update?

maybe pressure from the online content providers. "you guys better put focus on online content, then on the users local stuff. else we don't join the ride. best regards, netflix & hulu."

THIS. what drew me to boxee (and subsequently the box) is the fact that it was a TOTAL MEDIA HUB, able to access all types of media whether it music, video, photos, etc all in one place, with equal emphasis. pull up the menu and chose content type. simple. now with the boxee box, im seriously reconsidering.
also, all these reports that the new interface takes more UI actions to do the same thing are worrying. i hope this is just an initial fuck up and they will bring back total functionality, as in NOT clumping all local media simply as "Files" with a generic list, but full features sections for each media type, with more focus on local. after all, most of us are gonna be running our local media through boxee. at least thats what i always hoped for, only for them to switch their direction post-launch
MODS/BOXEE TEAM:: what has me going is this: "Music / Photos: We’ve really focused this version of Boxee on video. With that in mind we decided to push music and photos into the files menu until we give it a little more TLC." - from the boxee blog. can we get confirmation that Music and Photos will get their own sections on the main menu, instead of the generic FILES category? ETA if possible?

Beyond merely the layout of the new UI (which I agree is a step backwards), I'm extremely unimpressed with how unpredictable the effect of the "Back" button is.
Sometimes it moves you back one screen... sometimes it brings down the menu... and no matter what, it never takes you back to the home screen. Every time you press the thing it's a mystery as to what is going to happen, and after having used it for a day or so no what actually happens is rarely what you wanted.
Go to the weather app, navigate through a couple pages, and then try to get back to the home screen. Frustrated yet?

That is utterly UNBELIEVABLE. We can thank boxee's "content partners" for this I'm sure.

The point is i shouldn't have to. I didn't wednesday night when i still had .09 beta software as it shipped. And again, If I go to files, i can no longer sort by genre... just a giant pile of files.

Does anybody know if boxee (box) dev's read here? They better release a statement about the redesign. Before this rides the big "web-2.0-social-media-wave".
I wonder why they released a beta that looked and worked so wonderful and intuitive, just to release an 1.0 that's the complete opposite. Why confusing the user. What was the betatesting for?
I really believe content providers had a big influence in all that GUI redesign.

I just received a statement from Avner.

I have about a grand in my pocket that I am just itching to spend on either a mac mini or a boxee box. (Yeah, I know the big difference in price.)
But, I'm not willing to spend 200.00 on what will amount to be a huge headache.

next is how do you stop the box from automaticly updating again to 1.0
To me there looks like there no choice becasue the box automaticly updates without askig and forces the update.

Boxee: this is your exit strategy out of this mess: let current users downgrade and cancel automatic upgrade. New users who are not tech-savvy and did not run the alpha-beta on their PC -yes, those users that you are now targeting- could care less and will be happy with the new UI.
Old users happy, new users happy, partners and investors happy, boxee team happy. Your exit strategy, I'm telling you.

As for the Box automatically upgrading itself, this didn't happen to me. When I first turned on the Box yesterday, I had to manually do the upgrade via settings. When I downgraded today, it didn't prompt me to upgrade.

10th,
Yesterday I was in the same boat as you. My BB was still on .9 version and I read all the nightmares of the 1.0 upgrade.
When I got home yesterday I powered up the BB and went into system setting to see if I could disable updates and I could not.
What I saw is the BB was already downloading in the background an update that I could not stop unless I wanted to pull the plug on my internet.
Shortly later I was prompted to reboot because there was an update. there was no way out of it. So I got the 1.0xxxx25 update.
I'm not happy.
So if there is anyway to get it back to .9 and then if anyone can figure out how can we block the update server from communicating to the BB. Maybe somehow doing so via your router??
I'm not that techy to figure that out but I know plenty here are, or find another way to block the BB from talking to the update server.
Then I would be such a happy camper with Boxee Box running version .9 until a few month later when Boxee has worked out all there bugs in 1.0 then I will try again WHEN I WANT TO UPGRADE!!!
So be great if someone would work this out for all of us here. I'm sure I'm not the only one that want to go back to version .9

I would hope that this would be a pretty loud statement, but perhaps it will fall upon deaf ears. Due to my previous positive experiences with the beta, I decided to purchase the boxee so that I could have a low power, small unit with a remote control.
After reading this post (and a couple of others) it appears as if there is little benefit to me to do so.
Before hearing about the boxee box, it was always my intention to build a shuttle pc capable of streaming 1080p and load it up with several software solutions, (vlc media player, boxee, and xbox media center) and use whatever best suited me that particular day, but boxee changed my mind.
Unfortunately after today, my mind is changed back, it will cost me about 400-600 bucks for the solution that I am interested in, but worth it in my opinion.

I've just ordered my Boxee Box, ought to be delivered sometime next week (hopefully). I've been a long time user of XMBC on a hacked original Xbox, but my Xbox has finally died so I needed something to fill the void.
I paid good money for the Boxee Box because it handles media files from the local network (something hardly any other players do), and without requiring me to install iTunes (something AppleTV does). There's even the promise of 1080p output, although I understand this might be something that needs work.
I am disappointed to read about Boxee's new interface strategy, and hope that over time we'll have the option to change its behaviour. Online media sources can be handy, but nothing beats the convenience and quality of movies you already own.
As many others have said, Boxee's greatest strength is where the competition is blind: local media. If I wanted an Internet streaming player, I'd buy a Google TV.

Here are a couple of my observations with the new 1.0 version of the software.
Subtitles
We should be able to default these to OFF.
Local Videos
Need to return the ability to mark watched/unwatched
Need to return the ability to be able to show only unwatched
Need to return the ability to select files by genre
Need to return the ability to display local content mixed in with web content
Local Music & Photos
Need to return these to the home page
Need to return the ability to select files by genre
Removing these features is a huge issue for me. I don't understand why the Boxee developers would cripple the software in the newest release. You guys had a great working interface. I do understand the reasoning behind the new menu structure, but I do not understand why you would remove the features I mentioned above as they seem to be only database related features.
I will say that I do like the new weather app much better in the 1.0 release. And as far a not having Netflix or Hulu Plus in this release I say big deal. I would rather wait a few weeks to get them integrated into the software.

That hasn't gone anywhere though the amount of online content that now shows up when you click Movies or TV Shows can overwhelm the local collection.
I have two local movies (one starts with a " and the other is "21") that show up in the first row of Movies when sorted AtoZ.

Also, i wish there was a way to disable certain content from showing up in the movies listing, i.e: all the really old movies from the 20s' and 30's that I will never watch.

To be constructive, AYFKM? This UI is horrible, features were pulled, and I can't see any evidence of anyone who was a alpha, beta, or any greek letter tester.
1. Can't mark a local copy of a show as viewed?
2. No genre metadata on local movies?
Boxee, its looking somewhat obvious that you were paid or coerced to neuter your support for local data.
You're NO DIFFERENT than AppleTV or GoogleTV. This product is going to get slaughtered by customer reviews. Most of the posts I am reading are from very upset customers.

Boxee Team - New UI - FAIL!
You just killed what most positively differentiated your product from the other streamers.
You specifically told prospective customers to try the product (via software) before they bought the Box. Then changed (and effectively gutted) it, on release day!
Huge mistake.
I loved the beta interface and loved that I could jump straight to my local content, which I use 90% of the time.
I'm getting a WD TV Live Hub instead, reluctantly. A device designed for local content.

I still like Boxee a lot, but I am pretty upset about changing so much on launch day. However, only three things really, really bug me.
Putting our local media/'files' to the side. I want the option to make my local media front and center. I would like them to be displayed first under the main 'Shows' and 'Movies' sections, without going to 'Files' first.
Live (or more frequent) change detection for watch directories. I want to be able to drop a video into a shared folder on my PC, then go sit down on the couch and have this video appear when I browse to my Shows.
Big home screen change. I actually really liked the look of the 0.9 beta. It was fun yet classy. The new interface looks bland and like some type of 'alpha' product.
I would be totally in love with this perfect home media device if at least the first 2 of these 3 things were fixed! Thanks.

*Incredibly* disappointed in the new UI.
I was very excited to get my box - ran upstairs to get it set up - and then found that the main use I had for it had been crippled.
I bought this to replace a low-WAF PC. XBMC with MediaStream on a PC is great for local (NAS) media files but I wanted to rid myself of the constant Windows irritations and lack of good "integration" with remote, etc.
Boxee's UI has never been "perfect" but it always showed imagination & seemed to be making good progress. This new UI is bland, hard to navigate, and puts local files in some distant corner, swamping me with web content that I didn't ask for. (I can't even really understand what the web movies/shows are, or how they were selected for me - but I do know that I can't browse my own library!)
The box will be perfect when it has easy access to a hybrid text/boxart listing of my LOCAL movies, and easy access to the home screen, where I can choose from favorite sources: Local Movies, TED, and YouTube. Maybe I'll discover new sources and add them, but I didn't ask for these ones.

I've been super excited for the boxee release for months. Just got it today and am pretty disappointed. Mainly due to the UI I think. It's just... meh.

Ok, i got mine to downgrade and not autoupdate on boot.
0.unplug ethernet (i needed to use ethernet for this)
1.turn it off
2. hold power button on box for 15 seconds
3.set restore to factory settings
4.when it boots up and says lets get you connected click start then put ethernet in, put take it out after like 6/7 of those flashes.
5. if it prompts you to upgrade, restart the box with the ethernet plugged in. hopefully it'll let you login.
these are kind of rough i know, i only had one shot, but i'm running .9 and can say that i'm liking it alot more. but it basically consists of plugging and unplugging the ethernet on the first boot.

Good info. It took a few tries, but that worked for me as well. It's still scanning my media (mostly mkv), so I can't comment on how smooth playback will be.
I'm happy to be back on 0.9, but I have a feeling it's going to periodically check for an update whether I'm rebooting or not. I guess we shall see.

It's not that much more difficult to browse your own library, either from the tv-shows->files or from the files menu if you find yourself jumping back and forth between your movies and TV a lot. I don't like the new UI either, but lets try to keep the complaints free or hyperbole here.

Unfortunately it's going to ask you to upgrade fairly often, and the only workaround is to reset the box when it does. I downgraded yesterday out of frustration, but switched back to 1.0 when I realized 0.9 was also full of bugs and ran worse on the box on top of that.

It checks constantly yes, and it gives you a dialog that just says "get info" and "reset and upgrade" so you need to reboot the box a lot to get rid of it.

messy boxee box downgrade force
insert this step:
setup bogus http proxy host
naturally this breaks internets media info scraping
hopefully this thread will push the HORRIBLE gui issues to user-choice
less messy: filtering at firewall appliance

we should all complain in the Dlink forums see if they do something about it.

I don't think D-Link cares about software issues at all. They probably just forward them directly to the boxee team.
Let's pray that the promised update gets spread soon... including old GUI structures and w/o that ugly blue highlight color :)

After doing a hard reset back to the factory installed software, ie the beta UI, is there any way to disable the damn autoupdate so that we can keep our beautiful beta UI. I've had to reset this box twice now, every time the I leave it for a couple hours and come back, it pops up that damn message stating to restart the machine to update, but won't let you back out of the message!

My biggest issue so far is it not remembering my preferences. If I choose movies, I don't want to have it bring up a list of "Popular" movies - I want it to bring up a list of my movies I have on my local drives. I don't mind having to switch to "Files" but the next time I go back to movies, it should damn well remember that's where I went. If I want to see a list of popular indie movies.. I can go bring that up if I like, I don't want to be forced to view it every time.
