View Full Version : New Boxee Box won't boot ?

Just bought the bbox, plugged it in, got the grey boot screen saying 'Loading...' then nothing, my Tv goes blank, says HDMI source not available...?

Almost like a bad firmware flash from the manufacturer. Is there a way to reload factory flash via USB drive ? (Hold power for 10 seconds will flash red light 3 times, then 1 time green in a loop...?)

Help ! Do I have to return for a new box ?
Cheers

shut down for ten seconds.

Restart and just let it do it's thing without touching anything. Give it several minutes to do this.

I'm having the same issue. I had it sitting for 2hrs for one of my boot attempts. Supposedly the files for flashing over USB will get released soon.

To any boxee devs: WINK WINK HINT HINT

Try holding down the power button for five seconds, then let it boot up. You should get into debug mode where it'll let you restore the firmware.

Yep, did that already about 5 times without success, with / without LAN connected...

Just did it again now, still nothing after 10 minutes. My router doesn't seem to even be assigning a DNS address after powerup...

Is there a web service console/ssh/logcat I can connect to & get some feedback on this thing...? Can a plug a USB keyboard & type some kind of reset code, etc. ?

Thanks.

No there are no options to do what you ask.

I have no suggestions at this time. May require a call to D-link on this one....

Just spoke to tech support, had me hold down power for 10 seconds to reset, logo is showing up yellow, still nothing, told me to return unit at the store...

Fail.

going to once again BEG that the firmware image be posted so I can try flashing my most likely firmwareless boxeebox that will not boot past the cube video and gets error 0x314 when I try to factory restore.

Exchanged for a new unit, will try it out tonight, here's hoping...

burk3; did you find the firmware file(s) & USB loading instructions ?

No they are not online anywhere yet AFAICT. I have notifications on all the knowledgebase sections for boxeebox and check these forums and avs pretty much hourly. Nobody has been assigned to my support tickets either.

This might sound ridiculous, but mine was doing the exact same thing. Then I tried turning my TV off and then back on, and there it was. I think it is an HDMI output issue, but if you restart your TV it works just fine. At least mine did. I hope they fix this soon though.

in your thread you stated that yours was showing no signal, mine is just showing up grey (maybe technically black due to blacklevel issues <.<)

boxee #2 = fail, green logo for about 10 seconds, then yellow logo, blank screen.

Maybe it's my TV ? It's an older Dell W3207C 720p LCD with HDMI input. Have a Philips DVD player running no problem on HDMI.

http://www.hdtvsolutions.com/Dell_W3207C.htm

I also tried a HDMI > DVI adapter that came with an ATI HD 5670 to my 22" Samsung 216BW, same thing. I see the grey 'Loading...' screen, monitor goes blank after about 10 seconds searching for input...

I'm <assuming> if I see the grey boxee POST screen, then the setup is correct...? Almost like boxee boots and sets a screen resolution that my TV (1366 x 768) & Monitor (1680x1050) don't support ?

Maybe a bad batch of boxees from the same serial number series, from the same store... ? Guess I'll try the 10 seconds power/hold again... <sigh>...

Update: Boxee #2 works on different LCD monitors. I ended up bringing the bbox to the office to try a variety of monitors via HDMI > DVI cable and they all worked. Firmware updated to 1.x.

Tried 3 different Philips:
19" (1280x1024)
22" (1680x1050)
24 (1920x1200)

Looks like my Dell W3207C TV (720p) & Samsung 216BW (1680x1050) have incorrect EDID info and bbox loses sync beyond the grey 'Loading...' screen. I'm sure the first bbox I had was working fine with the same bug.

Option 1: Dev Request - Please add support for unknown HDMI sources
Option 2: Return the BoxeeBox
Option 3: Buy a new TV

Although I am in the market to purchase a new TV, I won't let bbox influence my timeline.
Option 2 it is unless Devs can deliver Option 1 within a 'reasonable' time frame (4-6 weeks ?)

Cheers,

Boxee officially supports only HDMI connection and your TV needs to support HDCP

Didn't see HDCP requirements printed on the box anywhere... Still doesn't explain why the Philips LCD monitors work and my HDCP compliant Samsung 216BW doesn't via the HDMI > DVI cable, but anyway...

I want to believe, really. I'm setting up a MythTv backend, my Boxee Box experiment started because I can't run Coax to a location where I want to move my TV. Guess I'll have to build a Ubuntu Boxee or MythTv frontend mini-pc for that old LCD TV...

Thanks for this input.

I got my Boxee box today via USPS and I must say I was excited :p I have been using Boxee on a mac mini for quite a while and I was excited to be able to sell the mac mini and buy the much cheaper Boxee Box to replace it. I opened the box and noted the very Apple inspired packaging. I was impressed.

I hooked the BB up to my television and booted it for the first time. I was greeted with a notice that there was a new firmware version available and that I should upgrade. So I let it update itself. All seemed well the firmware downloaded and installed without a hitch. The box rebooted, I logged in and I started to get used to the new interface. I pointed the box to my network share of movies and television shows so it could start it's scrape. I must admit I didn't want to wait while it scraped my library so I browsed the file system to find the show that my wife and I wanted to watch and started to watch it. All was going well, for about 10 minutes. The screen froze. Damn. Okay I will reboot it maybe it just had a glitch, it is a BRAND NEW hardware platform and there are bound to be issues, I understand this and I accept this. I pressed the power button for 3 or 4 seconds and the box powered down. I pressed the power button again and I got the grey loading screen, for about 15 minutes :( I let it sit and sit and sit then the loading screen corrupted. :( bugger :( I unplugged the unit and tried again. Now I don't even get a loading screen. I tried everything I could think of and find on the Internet and no go. The box is not even pulling an IP address anymore. I called support and I really must say that they were utterly useless. No matter how hard I tried to explain to "Chuck" that if I unplug the HDMI cable from the Boxee Box and plug it into my DVD player the television works fine, but when I move that cable back to the Boxee Box I get nothing on my television he couldn't understand that my television and HDMI cable were functioning perfectly and that I was on the correct input on my television. Eventually he gave me an RMA number so I will get a new box.

Anyone else out there have this issue where your Boxee box won't even boot a little?

Exact same problem, could get the initial Boxee splash screen but no animation. Turns out the HDMI cable went bad. Once replaced, Boxee sprung back to life.

I had the same problem. I rebooted several times - the grey "loading" screen would show up for a while, then flash static, then black. I could hear the Boxee responding to the remote, but no picture. Finally, I switched inputs on the TV to something else, then back to the Boxee and BAM, there it was.
