View Full Version : slightly off topic - mac mini streaming ?

I currently have a mac mini which hosts all of my music and videos using 1 TB drive. I also use an apple tv to stream the videos to a tv in the other room (both with boxee).

I would really like to just switch the apple tv over to a second mac mini (for many of the reasons mentioned in other atv vs mac mini threads). However, I'm unsure how well this would work. For example, the apple tv is great at streaming movies, but when I use my laptop to look at the shared itunes media library from the first mac mini, the view is horrible. As one example, I can't look at my movies or tv shows in their categories or views (everything is shown together: music, tv shows, movies, podcasts). Is there an easy way around this? I basically want my second mac mini to be an apple tv, except capable of boxee, netflix, and the internet... Someone help!

so you're going to run a 2 mac mini setup, with one hosting all the storage and the other just connecting to network shares on the first? Should work great!

I run a mac mini in the living room with boxee playing media from the storage on a powerbook g4 in another room, it works great.

I don't really have much itunes content though, I can take a look at that. I only have a few HD tv shows that were given away for free when they introduced HD.

First of all you should know that Boxee doesn't import your stuff from iTunes so your media is likely to be organized in a different way. The Boxee team is working on this so one day it will all be the same more or less. Stay tuned.
