View Full Version : Boxee Box: Subtitle Issue

I just received my Boxee Box today and love it. Despite the incredible lack of Apps right now, but knowing that its just day #1 and growing, I can easily over look it.
However, I'm having an issue with my subtitles on my MKV video files. The subtitles are showing once I press play but I want to shut them off. When I go to the video settings, the video and audio icons are lit up but the subtitles cannot be selected. How can I fix this? Is it a bug? It only happens to random files.
Also, is there an option to disable all subtitles by default? It is getting annoying disabling every time I watch a movie.
Thanks!

This is happening on my files, too. Frustrating to say the least.

Same issue here. Dual audio video files also seem to work sporadically at best but I'll let that slide subtitle issue is big. :/

I have a similar problem - I have English subtitles in the folder with a Korean film, but it seems like Korean subtitles are displayed by default. And there's no way to select a different sub file or anything, with the "Subtitles" option greyed out.

Are you sure the subtitles are not hard coded on the mkv file?
I have had issues with subtitles showing up when I start playing my mkv files as well, but I am able to shut off the subtitles, no problem.
I do this by pressing the ok button on the remote, once the file has started playing, which brings up the fast fwd, stop, etc. If you press up it goes to the settings where subtitles can be disable...Just making sure you are accessing the subtitle section from there?

No they are not hard coded. The subtitles option is greyed out completely. No options whatsoever. No hardcoding.

Yeah, that's how I'm trying to access it, and the subs definitely aren't hard coded. In fact, I can adjust them without a problem on the original firmware the box shipped with, though there seem to be a few issues with subs on that firmware as well. It's just 1.0 that it -completely- doesn't work with.

I filed a ticket with Boxee because I have found that .ass subtitle files which work in the boxee software version do not work with the BBox. Hopefully this and other subtitle issues are quickly fixed.

You do not see .ass subtitles? Are you all using the latest version 1.0.1.16125? Can you not change the subtitles via the OSD>settings >Subtitles?

Yes, I'm using the latest version. The OSD Subtitle option is greyed out, non clickable.

Someone tell me again why subs are ON by default? And why there isn't an option in the UI to toggle this behavior? And why there also doesn't seem to be a setting for default language OR subs in the settings either?

Agreed. Why didn't they take the last version of Boxee and just add improvements instead of completely starting the UI over? Makes no sense. Killed a great thing at the very very wrong time. I'm hopeful however.

All of the mkv files I have ever used do not have an additional subtitle file with them. They should be a part of the mkv file. Have you tried removing the .ass file from the folder and see if you can access the subtitle menu?

In my case the .ass files live inside the container. Since you are offering this suggestion am I to assume you are not having issues with subtitles on your box?

Not being able to turn of subtitles by default is silly to me. I as well am scratching my head as to why they didn't just work off of the same Boxee software we've all been using.

I only have do like 10 steps to turn off subtitles which are enabled by default on every god damn mkv i play.
1. Press Enter.
2. Up
3. Right
4. Enter
5. Right
6. Right
7. Enter
8. Enter
9. Back
10. Back
Is this excessive? Please make an option to disable subtitles by default.

I'd kill to have this bug. I almost exclusively watch anime, and I'm stuck instead with the "Subtitles never on" bug.

In my case I have lots of files with subtitles in them that work on all other players, but on the boxee box no subtitles show up. Going to the OSD it _says_ that there are subtitles, but none actually show up on the screen. Very annoying.

Same thing here. I have some videos with multiple subtitle tracks, and Boxee Box just picks the first one and won't let me change it. So for some movies I'm stuck with the director's commentary subtitles and not the actual movie.

Do you have issues with subtitles that are long and get cut off the screen on the left or right? I was testing some Anime mkv files and whenever there is a long subtitle it gets cut off.

Try connecting to your media via SMB shares rather than UPnP media streaming servers. I had this issue too, and as soon as I connected to my Win7 box via SMB option instead of TVersity, I was able to turn subtitles off manually.
STILL wish there was a way to keep them off by default though..

I have the opposite problem. I have embedded subtitles in my .mkv files and they don't show up at all, no matter what settings I use.
Enable subtitles is on, the correct track is on, but they don't show up.
They work fine through VLC and other media players.
Any suggestions?

Seems like subtitles are just screwed in general at the moment. Probably nothing to do but wait for the next patch... which is hopefully forthcoming.

I'm having the same problem with .mkv files forcing me to watch the subtitles and the OSD subtitle setting is greyed out. I am using v. 1.0.1.16125

Same problem (with MKVs and anime). Best bet for the present is to extract the subs and save as .srt, with same file name as the file. 'til we get a real fix, that is.

I've found that most all of my subtitle issues (subtitles would not display) were fixed (a work around) by going into the display setting and resetting to default. Even a small adjustment to corner 1 or corner 2 breaks mkv subtitles. Resetting to default resolved the issue. This of course means overscan issues for now but it at least I have my subtitles back.

i posted this in another thread (there's a few about subs not showing up in mkvs)
i noticed that if you have the overscan settings to anything but 0% the subs will not show up.
try changing overscan to 0% and you should be able to see embedded subs... (this is a bug that i hope will be fixed promptly)

This works great for me.
OK--> setting ( top right corner)->sub titles-> uncheck "enable subtitles"
I wish there was an option to disable subtitles globally and enable them only on individual files.
