View Full Version : Boxee Box - Flash video not working in apps

I've seen a bunch of people report that in some apps you can hear the sound and the video doesn't show up. It seems to be in apps where the video is presented in Flash that this is the case. On my Boxee Box this is the case across the board with Flash-based content. Neither ads nor content video shows up, though the sound is present.

welcome to the world of boxee cheeseSoda!
its been a bad day, bug-wise. please bear with everyone! I'm sure someone will come up with a plan. (most likely a factory reset).

No worries, just wanted to report the bug (hopefully this was the appropriate place to do so). For what it's worth, I got my box yesterday and the issue was present in the factory build in addition to the new build I downloaded today.
I'm in a similar line of work, so I'm about as understanding as you can get with launch day bugs :) Good luck guys!

I had the same issue earlier today. Go to this thread/post and see if it helps:

I tried that, I still have the bug after the factory reset.

New Boxee Box from amazon.com today. Will not play video from either apps nor mkv files from my nas.
I've done a factory reset and setup a second time and still no video at any resolution.
I am using a Sony projection HD 1080i with dvi to hdmi cable. Boxee on Mac mini with hdmi works fine with this setup.
I have been looking forward to the boxee box for many weeks and now I am disappointed. Hopefully they will get a fix out soon. Fortunately Amazon will pay for return shipping if it does not work.
Will hold on to it now pending an update.

I just figured out that this bug only appears when the box is set to 1080i. The video will appear and play just fine in all other resolutions. But, in 1080i, you just get black.
Thanks for the reply filovirus, that gave me a tip that maybe it was specific to 1080i.

And as a side note, once you see this bug, it blows up the video player for the rest of the session. You have to restart boxee in order to watch anything following one of these bad playbacks. All subsequent video plays are black.

If the problem is 1080i, why wouldn't it work at 480p? Unfortunately I do not have a 1080p tv.

I can confirm the 1080i bug with flash video content not working (audio only with black screen).
Be sure to reboot the device after you see the bug! I was stuck for a while because I started in 1080i mode, which is my native resolution:
- device booted and detected 480p
- I changed it to 1080i
- tried flash content. only audio worked. Black video
- changed to 720p resolution. Still black video.
- a reboot here would have cleared the bug and made it start working. I didn't and kept trying other content, resolutions, etc.
- its interesting to note that once you try flash in 1080i and get black video/no audio, it happens on all sources, even divx and mkv files. You have to change resolution and reboot for it to work.
- if you set 1080i and to right to local content (divx, mkv) it works. Once you try flash it will stop working.
All in all, I'm glad my friend had a boxee and a newer 1080p tv to test and compare with. I'm sure this is a simple software bug and will be resolved soon.
Bring milkdrop visualization and some much better music jukebox style queueing and controls to boxeebox and we'll really be in business! Not to mention hulu and netflix. ;)

I second Vixhex, tested mine exactly like that and the results are the same. I had to reboot every time to get it fixed.

Same here. As soon as you get a black screen, the only way to fix it is to reboot the whole system.

That had to be the worst out of box experiance ever. Having to power cycle the box to get video to work the _first_ time. Not a single video played after I setup the box, just audio.
I power cycled the system and now it works, but I am worried that my wife will beat me up about it since she wants something that just works.

Thanks for this thread. I was going crazy today trying to figure out what happened.
I just received my Boxee Box this morning and it was working at first (in 480P). Then it stopped working after I changed the resolution. I changed it back to 480P and had no luck.
I called D-Link and they had no idea. They are going to call me back but I am glad that I found this thread.
Now if I can just get it to connect to my PC. This one is killing me. All my other PC's, my XBOX 360 and even my Android phone can connect to my PC and browse the shares. I enter in my login credentials and it just returns me back to the credentials screen.
Frustrating!

The boxee box will only work hdmi to hdmi. This is most likely your problem. See thread below:

I have this exact same problem with flash video in 1080i via HDMI. Audio is good, video is all black and after that nothing (local .mkv either) plays properly till a reboot. So basically almost none of the internet video works: not so good.

+1
And not only flash based online content. I also experience it with .MKV files and all resolutions I have tried (720p, 1080i 1080p).
