I'll check tonight but when I plugged mine in yesterday it did a firmware update could have sworn it took it to 1.0. Are you saying there is a new update already?

Hmmm... I would have to guess that you didn't have 1.0 but stranger things have happened :) Certainly most everyone else does not :)

great thanks, looking forward to seeing it tonight.
Do you know who controls the updates, D-Link or Boxee?
I hope it's the latter.

I would bet any money on it being boxee.

thank goodness, it's the only thing thats been eating away in my mind. I've used other d-link products in the past and been quite underwhelmed with their lack of ongoing support.

Strangest thing. I upgraded to 1.01.16125, no problem.
But now it's telling me there is a new version, that looks to be 1.01.16126, which okay great, I'll just upgrade. However, the 1.01.16126 update isn't completing or some file isn't being updated somewhere (or something), because after 3 rounds of updates and reboots, it still says I'm on 1.01.16125 and I need to upgrade.
Is anyone getting the same thing?

I tried looking for the 1.0 version (just now) and didn't find any.
The Boxee download page has 0.9.23 version (for Mac and Windows) and when I go to Settings -> System, there is no update option.
Am I doing something wrong?

They are talking about the Boxee Box. Other platforms will be available next year I think.

So I am a BIG Roku user and just fell into Boxee - installed on my PC last week and fell in love.
* Lots of cool content
* Netflix
* Hulu Plus on the way
So I ordered the Boxee Box and again am in love, but disappointed slightly.
* Upgraded to 1.0
* Remote kicks @$$ - very well done
* Kids here went to UI school - very slick - almost like the first time you used a Tivo feeling
* The box itself is iconic and VERY cool - makes Roku look like, well, a box
HOWEVER:
After using the PC version I was expecting Netflix on the Boxee Box day 1 - What happened?
Where is Netflix?
I am disappointed - and from a business perspective wondering what you guys were thinking releasing a box without at least one major "hub" (netflix, hulu - etc.)
So to ask the dumb question - When will the Box get Netflix?
Otherwise - very nice work!

Hello,
I picked up my Boxee box yesterday and was floored by how awesome it was. I was able to add all my personal media files and able sort through them by genre with couple of clicks. This is great, as I've backed up my entire dvd collection (1200 disc including full season tv shows)
This morning I received an update notification... so I updated...
I can not stand the new user interface. I understand that in the United States it may work for you, but as a Canadian it is terrible.
When I click movies, i get a list of independent or foreign films. We do not have the option to rent streaming titles, so all we have is the free stuff no-one would pay for.
When I click TV, i get a horrible quality low rez version from a Canadian website instead of my personal collection.
To access my media, I now have to go to files, them movies, and that's it. I can't sort by genre anymore. 18 hours ago it was amazing, now it's like I bought a new car, but after a day you took away the engine and front seats.
PLEASE can we have an option to select the default from our personal collection instead of on-line streaming.

I agree with you on this... We should be able to select defaults.
I use Boxee for my own files... online streams (other then netflix) are not needed.

Agree.
I purchased the boxee box to replace my qnap devices. I simply want to use it to watch my own files off my nas and netflix when it comes out. Being able to access my itunes and iphoto library from my nas would be awesome also but I doubt that will ever become available. NHL and mlb.com and netflix were my reasons for trading in the qnap device.

I also agree. This new interface is horrible. I wait forever for this box and now you make it crappy the day after I buy it. There does seem to be a queue and all the my videos are hidden away. If this is not fixed soon or if i cant set the version back then I am returning this thing!

Sorry if this has been asked/answered already - I've been away from my PC all day -- Is NAVI-X supported on V1 - and how - in the repos - or as a built in App?

navi-x works although its slow as hell just like on the software boxee. Repos are all there - works similar to the software.

That's good to know -- it's such a popular Repo/app - most likely why it responds slowly, lots of hits/usage
Getting my BBox tomorrow - hopefully I'll get it updated without any issues and start using/understanding the new layout - looks like a pile of cries for help with the new BBox/V1 - can't believe how the forum has filled up with new threads in the short time I've been away from home/my PC today

Agreeing with the above posters.
I got my boxee box yesterday and was pleased as punch with it. Sexy interface, quick loading of all my files and artwork for them, solid streaming.... and then I updated.
The new interface makes me wanna puke. Powder-blue icons, bland as hell interface, my movie and tv shows are a side-note section called files now? I'm getting lag in loading of everything, some that don't load at all. No option to monitor my source for file additions any longer? And I don't need a big smack me in the face friends icon on my home screen. I could give a flying puck about socially networking to see what people are watching. I'm in this for the excellent handling of my home NAS files that it WAS doing until now. Also, on a side note, your "movies" section is filled with GARBAGE. Just because movies are around and are public domain because they're so old does not make me want a section polluted with thousands of crap movies I'm never going to watch just so you guys can boast more content. Netflix has this problem in Spades.
Sorry guys, if you don't make a quick 180, this is being returned.

That fact was well known before the BBox was released - it 'will' be released - it will still be free - but it will be a few weeks before it's available, as previously announced
If you don't own a BBox now - and you think the BB owners are beta testers, then consider yourself lucky and wait for us "beta testers" to fix the software release you are waiting for :D

Was Happy Yesterday with the old firmware.... I updated to 1.0.... HORRIBLE....What an ugly interface.... What a disappointment. I hooked up my computer to get the old interface back...Looks like I'll be packing Boxee back up, and returning it this weekend. Hard to justify spending $200 bucks when you like the old PC software version better.

I got the new software and I can't figure out the browser..
It takes me to Bing and I can search for stuff but I can't move around or select anything on the screen. I tried the D Pad on the front of the remote and the arrows on the back keyboard and nothing works.
It needs to support live streaming. You have TWIT.TV as one of the apps but it does not have the live TWIT.TV stream. Thats one of the things I really wanted to see on my TV.
Also whats up with the Youtube application? It seems like the HD videos are not in HD. How do I get them to display in HD?
Another issue is, is there a way to turn off Subtitles by default?
Lots of questions I know. :)
Thanks!

I concur. I live in the US and the new GUI stinks. Even inside shows - "files" - I select a show and turns out it hits a website. WTH.

I completely agree. The older version was easier to use. The home screen gave me quick, easy access to my local media (buried and crappy interface now), and terrific integration of apps.
This is the ultimate bait and switch. I refuse to believe anyone likes what was release. Roll this thing back, the old version was fantastic as is.

Another note, you can sort by genre in the movies tab, and your movies will again show up beneath all the steaming media. Why can't they flip this? Local sources first, crap you don't want at the bottom.

ok I must be missing something. If I do this I dont get my own files.
Is this right?
1) menu button until the grey navigation bar appears at the top
2) choose movies
3) then how do I then "navigate to files"?
Files is a separate choice on the navigation bar not a subsection of movies.

After my multi firmware message woes this morning, I did a factory restore and have much better stability with FW v1.0.1.16125 than I did with v1.0.1.16126.
When I check for an update, it states I have the latest at v1.0.1.16125. Did Boxee stop the 126 update from being pushed out? Anyone else still at v1.0.1.16125? I probably will wait a bit before I update and see what others say.
It seems like there is overscan issues with some of the apps where you'll get a blank screen when it goes to commercial, then you have to hit full screen and do the mouse click again to full screen again to get it back to full. Watching the Daily Show on Comedy Network the video will flake out when a commercial kicks in, then starts doing an overscan/stutter thing. I was surprised how good Conan looked in "full screen" on the Comedy Network, as the Daily Show is 4x3 and lots of artifacts. Networks would do better to include the adverts in the show stream or have a dedicated app instead of utilizing the browser. I don't mind the ads if the quality of the show is good and you don't have to mess about trying to get it to play consistently. Most likely something to do with ad rotation.
Question for the mods: Wouldn't it have been a good idea to have dedicated categories specifically for Boxee Box on the forum on Go-Live day?
Having software/box versions blended makes it awfully difficult to find things and results in the duplicate problem posts. I know you guys are doing great helping people and are probably ragged, but I'm just curious as to why this wasn't set up prior?

Question for those that have a Boxee Box: Is the TV section still a merger of online and local sources? Or are they now separated?
I'm disappointed to hear about the movie section. In my opinion you should be able to choose which movie sources show up on your main movie page (turn on/off certain vendors, or just choose local files). I agree with the others that I don't want to see indie films, just my own collection.
I was going to order the box tonight but I may wait a bit...

Marcel, its not just the content read the forums... you hide our own content under web content. The UI is not nice at all, its NOT what we were beta testing for you.
I am going to stick to v0.9
Learn from a massive mistake on your part, look at the forum who is complaining? NEW people... revert back to the stable beta, you are loosing sales big time Amazon will not be happy with the returns.

We don't want "more content" we want OUR CONTENT!
Just give us a option to shut off certain content providers. Then I can shut off the 3 movie stream services (MUBI, NFB, OpenFilm?????) I get all this shit from.
Just tell us that you are working on that at least. I really dont want to return this thing and I really want to support you guys since you have been the best option by far up to this point. But when all we get is "deal with it :)" and "oh your content is there, just buried away now:p" its EXTREMELY frustrating.

As another massive Boxee fan in the UK, I'm really disappointed to hear all this about the local sources being harder to get to. I've pre-ordered a Boxee Box from amazon but think I'll cancel it now and just stick with the appleTV version. Can't believe that Boxee have chosen a moment like this to screw things up.
I'm thinking the same thing.
Can we stick with v0.9 or are you forced to upgrade?
Totally agree with this, please tell us an option like this is coming and please help us get to OUR content first.
I agree too, I understand the Boxee ethos is web content but i'm sure a lot of people were buying this for it's excellent access to local stuff and nice interface

Word, man!

You need to download it to update it, unless they turn v0.9 off and force us to update, but I cant see that happening.
I think they can see the reaction to v1 so I think we will be safe with the "beta" version..

I'm totally with you on this. I pre-ordered a BB from Amazon UK ages back and have been waiting with baited breath for it to be released.
Now it's out in the USA and all these issues are coming to light, especially over the totally crazy UI changes, I'm so disappointed I can't tell you :(
I wanted a wife-friendly replacement for my PCH A-100 with a nice UI, and Boxee installed on my Mac looked like just the ticket, so naturally, I went for the BB.
Now on release of the actual BB, they change the UI!
For those in the USA - as was mentioned earlier - there's some obvious issues and aggravation, but at least USA users have access to a lot of the online media sources. Over here in the UK we don't have that, as much of it is unavailable to regions outside the USA, so trying to show me a list of online media IN PREFERENCE to my own local media does not make sense at all.
I had high hopes I could set up multiple accounts on the BB, one for me, one for the wife and one for the kids, and split the media up. However there's no way my wife is going to be happy having to burrow down the menus to find the DVD she wants to watch off my NAS. The old version of the UI made all this very easy indeed, now it's just "broken".
It would seem someone didn't really think this UI change through. It's been made much too online-centric.
I was also stunned to read that one of the main features I was looking forward to swapping from the PCH to the BB for - the indicator to show what shows you'd watched and which you had not - has now been removed in 1.0! When I am confronted with 20+ episodes of a TV show, I'd like to be able to quickly see which one I last watched, now I can't.
So, for now, I've cancelled my order. Sorry Boxee team, sorry Avner. You were my heroes and I thought your product was amazing, but this 1.0 seems like you've lost your way a little.
I'll be lurking and watching these forums and as soon as it becomes apparent that the dev team are listening to what appear to be genuine concerns about the UI design, specifically local media content, and attempt to address them - this is the UI design I am talking about, the other issues like instability and playback problems also need to be fixed, but I am sure they will be in a future update - then I'll re-consider and may re-order.
Sorry for the long post, I'm just so disappointed :(

MrVectrex well said.
I think we all are in the same boat as you but the UK users have the good luck of knowing that the UI is now "broken" before waisting their money. I too am mostly just looking for a response from the Boxee team that they know this is an issue and they are actually fixing it. All we have received so far is "we are right you guys are wrong" responses. I have my fingers crossed that they see the light and help all of us out.

I was all ready to dump one of my Popcorn Hour devices on eBay, the A-100, and replace it with a Boxee Box.
It seems like I better hold onto it for the time being.

If I was you, I'd just keep monitoring forums like this one and wait a while. Hopefully some updates will sort this all out.
However, I would not expect anything major to happen by way of update for a few weeks, I can't see the Boxee team getting more than 1 major update per month out, there's just too much to test before rolling a change out. Even 1 a month may be asking too much...

Mr. Vectrex, sadly, I think boxee has thought those UI changes through, that they deliberately chose to make boxee more online centric. I think it's mistake, not only because I personally preferred the UI in the beta but because I believe that it's the wrong marketing decision.
Right now, I'm disappointed. In the short-term, I'm not really counting on seeing major changes in the UI, I think it's here to stay because it's a conscious move that was meant to please online partners. In the long run, I think it might kill boxee because they lost what set them apart.
Now, to end on a positive note, I think the box is pretty sweet hardware-wise, so there's hope if someone gets to hack that thing...

Yes. I was looking forward to 'upgrading' my Popcorn Hour boxes with a nice animated GUI, and with the bonus of not having to mess with YAMJ.
Looks like I better stick to my Popcorn Hour with YAMJ and the Aeon skin. It seems easier to access **my** media with this device.....at this point.
Even the Boxee software on Windows is slow to update when something new is added to the folder. That needs to change. If something new gets added to the locally scanned folders, then it needs to show up almost immediately, at least within a few minutes.....It sounds like the scanning on the Boxee Box only happens once an hour.

In my opinion what set Boxee apart from other internet tv/movie services was the ability to integrate it heavily with your own files. Now that feature is taking backseat to online video sources.
Edit: Just a thought of a possible way to fix this issue. Rename "files" under Shows and Movies to "My Shows" and "My Movies" and then have an option to make that the default view when you enter one of those sections.

From what i can see in the 1.0 version on the boxee box the most frequent setting for scanning local files is once a day now. you would have to manually get it to scan if you want to watch something you just added. Yet another feature I do not understand.

You would just navigate that specific file from the Boxee Box. You wouldn't need to initiate a scan

Not sure what you mean there. I cant just navigate to the file. The box does not know its there until it scans it or you manually add it in. At any rate it still does not put it in the "Movies" section. I still have to navigate through the folders section. And you know what if I wanted to navigate through folders I would just hook a regular PC up to my tv. Same for this internet content but I don't like watching treble quality video on a large tv. Espically from a box that screams that it does 1080p and then hides all the files that are 1080p away to show you low quality streamed ones.
Sorry I just could not be more upset over this.

I agree with Bob_UK. What "feedback" were they getting from users. Please move all my local content away? Please remove some of these helpful features? Please don't add anything new but a design change? Sounds like bullshit market speak to me. They just want to stream online content because thats what everyone else does and not care what their user base does. I would really like the see the feedback that says people want content and features hidden and removed!

This situation has really upset me. I would have been a loyal and vocal Boxee customer and fan. I had already convinced several coworkers to choose the Boxee Box over Roku or Popcorn. Unless we see MAJOR UI changes in the direction of the 0.9 beta, I will be a vocal Boxee cynic.
I'm in the same position, having been a raging fan and recommending it to a lot of people. With this crippling I'm going to like an idiot...
Going into damage control now and spreading the word that Boxee Beta on PC/Mac is awesome but Boxee "Final" on the Boxee Box is nothing but a crippled version of the software.

Just for the record....I will not be ordering a boxee box due to the changes made to the 1.0 UI.
From my perspective I am ONLY interested MY content...I live in Canada so aside from maybe Netflex there is nothing I'm remotely interested in (including the social media component...barf). As someone else noted above, I understand and appreciate a market for the whole "media integration" concept, but honestly, why not allow the user to control his/her own experience and determine what content he/she feels should be front and centre? I was prepared to pay a premium for this product in order to use it to stream my 1,000+ movies through my server ONLY BECAUSE I loved the previous UI so much. That and my wife knew how to use it. I will wait to see how these comments are addressed in the next update, but at this point, I'm heavily leaning towards an ATV2G....a stable Plex app is right around the corner.
Other big issues for me....
- local cache is needed to deal with meta data and movie artwork...having to wait while they populate each time you turn the box on is terribad (why not let us control this as well?)
- subtitles set to on as the default
- not being able to filter my movies by genre
I is sad face.

Please, let us access our local content easily, the way it was before v1.0. Local content management was the ONLY reason why I bought a Boxee box.
Please send us a clear message that you will implement a QUICK fix for this.
If there is no fix in 2 weeks, I will return my boxee box too.

This is going back if we don't get a way to set up our own experience.

Completely agree. Simply an option to make the LOCAL content the priority, so the fewest clicks are necessary to play a tv show or movie from a shared drive.

I don't know how much easier you need this to happen -- but after properly sharing the 18Tbs of local content on various locations on my network - ie...USB HDDs/HP Media server - Starting in the BBox's home page/tab, I'm only 3 clicks away from accessing it all, depending on which device/HDD I'm aiming at

I think we can all appreciate that it's not an issue for everyone, but you have to admit the new UI is NOT as friendly for local content as the previous version. For people who rely on mostly local content (as in pretty much ALL non-USA countries), effectively burying it - even only 3 clicks away - is a step back.
You can see from the heated responses in this thread that the changes do not appeal to a lot of people. I think it's hoped that Boxee will at least listen and try to correct this. There is definitely changes they can do which would appease both the content providers and the users...

I just went back to the Boxee app and checked on accessing the same local content -- no diff. - took just as long -- not sure what procedures some are taking, or how the media is getting shared - but for me. on my system, with my W7 shares it easy as pie on both the App and the BBox - onlt 5 or 6 seconds with the BBox remote in a dim lit room

Boxee Team,
I was one of the earlier posts on here and let me say first off that I apologize for coming off half-cocked. My opinions on the 1.0 changes are all still altogether the same, I meant everything I posted. The part I left out that I really shouldn't have is that I understand you guys are doing something monumental, and you deserve some credit for it.
I have been really talking up the Boxee Box to everyone I know, getting people ready to network their whole house with a few Boxee Boxes, and even have an business I plan to start locally installing these types of home networks centering around the use of Boxee software and hardware. No joke, I love you guys. But please please please toss a bandage on this wound really quick. I don't want to have to tell people who have been waiting to buy these ( since I told them to ) that they need to wait another couple months until things are ironed out.
These things were about to be my christmas presents to the people I know ( have about 15-16 people lined up to get "Boxee Homes" ), and I don't wanna start buying gift cards because I can't recommend it in it's current state. I know it's new, I know this is a new venture for Boxee in doing hardware and all, but it was stellar out of the box. Give us a revert to beta option, a customize UI option, or something along those lines.
I ordered from Amazon so I won't be returning this beautiful piece of equipment until I've given you guys a chance to sort this all out, but some kind of "we hear you guys, give us a sec" needs to happen asap.

Boxee Team,
I still like Boxee a lot, but I am pretty upset about changing so much on launch day. However, only three things really, really bug me.
Putting our local media/'files' to the side. I want the option to make my local media front and center. I would like them to be displayed first under the main 'Shows' and 'Movies' sections, without going to 'Files' first.
Live (or more frequent) change detection for watch directories. I want to be able to drop a video into a shared folder on my PC, then go sit down on the couch and have this video appear when I browse to my Shows.
Big home screen change. I actually really liked the look of the 0.9 beta. It was fun yet classy. The new interface looks bland and like some type of 'alpha' product.
I would be totally in love with this perfect home media device if at least the first 2 of these 3 things were fixed! Thanks.

This is total CRAPWARE! I've been using the AppleTV Boxee Hack for the past year or so, and was truly excited to get my Boxee Box in hopes of a faster experience. Installed the new upgrade this morning only to have it reboot into this user experience that looks like a 4yo created it! I will hold onto the Boxee Box for another week or two in hopes that Boxee gets its act together and reverts back to the intuitive and useful interface of yesterday, or back to Amazon.com the Boxee Box goes!

It may be true, but we should have the ability for local content to be front and center, rather than stuffed in the corner. Plus, now we've lost the ability to sort local content by genre/ mark them as watched or not. We should have the options to customize our page the way we want them. I also hate the huge featured tab on the bottom, i'd get rid of that in a second if i could.

Yeah it's possible, do a factory reset and then unplug it when it boots up, when it asks you to select a wireless network, select eathernet then plug it back in. It should skip the forced upgrade stage and take you straight to the login.
It WILL attempt to get you to update periodically though, the only way to stop this would be to block boxee in your router or something. When it does this you will need to reset the box to clear the upgrade request. It's not perfect, but if you're really missing 0.9 it does get it back for you.

Guys thanks for the feedback and agree with most of it we are working hard to improve this and we will be taking all your comments in order to look into making changes i understand that there is a huge change in the UI between 0.9 and 1.0 and it takes time to digest the ui has changed a lot over the last 3 years sometimes for the good not saying that this is the final decision but we are taking your feedback seriously and we will implement changes and when ready will make the necessary updates.
I know a lot of you have been with Boxee for a long time and if history is anything we try our hardest to bring what the community wants and i am happy that you are adding the feedback because it helps and guides us to improve the version .

I'm relatively new to Boxee, had demoed the beta on my computer and just got the BB yesterday after a lot of anticipation. The new version is disappointing for all of the reasons mentioned by others, but I don't think the answer is to revert to the beta UI, which was cluttered with too many options.
Instead the team needs to focus on incorporating the improvements most often cited in this and other threads into the new UI. Some other gripes on usability:
- It's really frustrating that 1.0 doesn't mark which videos I've watched and offer me the option when I finish watching to remove them from the list they're in. Even as a novice user, this seems so basic.
- Why do I always have to be warned when leaving a video in the browser? Yes, I'm sure I want to exit, that's why I pressed the button!
- On the home screen, the user should be able to control what gets featured below the icons (latest content from favorite shows/movies, next content in friends/watch later lists, most important apps, etc).
- Similarly, the user should be able to control which icons are on the home screen, with the addition of Photos and Music as options.
- The Friends and Watch Later lists should be accessible from the drop-down menu, not just on the home screen, and you should be able to determine the order the menu items appear from left-to-right.
- Drop down menu should also include photos and music.
- You should be able to determine the default view when clicking on Shows, Movies, etc. The fact that it takes you to Most Popular is frustrating, and basically means that you must navigate through the sub-menus to get to what you want.
- Ability to order Favorites, Watch Later.
- Auto default full screen is a no-brainer.

I absolutely agree that there must be a way to prioritize local content. I, and I am sure many others, bought this device primarily to give us a more polished and user friendly way to access local content. I would have been a thousand times happier if you had shunted all online content off to the side, rather than use 90% of the home screen to feature content I am only peripherally interested in.

Especially since now most of my online content viewing was via Hulu and now on Boxee box, a lot of it is unsupported (yet on the desktop, they work fine). It's experiences like this where I keep thinking it's actually better to just have the computer hooked up to the tv (HTPC) with a wireless keyboard and mouse. I'm still keeping my boxee box and hoping that they will make my $200 investment worth it though.

I couldn't care less about low quality video from thousands of terribad sites. I want a clean easy to use interface so that my family can play the decent video files I download with other applications.
In addition to the interface clutter from all the web nonsense it is *incredibly* annoying to have to select "Local File" every time a video is available on Hulu or some other low quality web source. Please give us the option to default to a "Local Source" friendly interface where these are not issues...

Check out Boxee's twitter. They made a statement about working on a fix to putting local files in the front as an option. It's being addressed.

I wanted a wife-friendly replacement for my PCH A-100 with a nice UI, and Boxee installed on my Mac looked like just the ticket, so naturally, I went for the BB.

LOL, I think there are a few of us who have to make sure purchases get wife approval!
I tell you what, I have some very, very good feelings about the posts that Avner and the rest of the Boxee team have been making on Twitter. I think they are most definitely listening to many of the concerns of users and potential users.
Now THAT is the sort of response I want to see from a company! ;)
Massive kudos to Avner and the rest of the Boxee team, I think your response has convinced me to put in an order for the BB again...keep up the good work!
If, as I've seen on Twitter, Boxee listen and make changes - specifically (for me at least) the local content - then I'm pretty sure this is the ideal replacement for the PCH for me (and hopefully the wife).

I TOTALLY agree! I got the BB for 2 reasons, local content and Netflix. Looks like I am out of luck on both counts. It is encouraging to see that Netflix will be supported by end of year but the presentation of local content is worrisome. So far I have also tried the WD Live and Popbox. WD Live is the best of the three, which is not saying much! I will stick with BB for 3 more weeks. If things dont improve I will have to realize that perhaps it is just not possible to create an easy to use STB that fits my needs. Maybe an HTPC is the answer....

I also want my local content front and center. especially my music and my photos. My wife just rolled her eyes when I showed her the steps to get to local content. This was much better before the update.
This is going back if we don't get a way to set up our own experience.
Damn. My wife thinks I am a fool to dump the old Apple TV for this. She likes the new Apple TV :(. I hard sold the boxee box. The new GUI sucks. I searched for a local movie and it picked the internet one first. I selected it by accident and my wife didn't stop rolling her eyes. As it stands, this thing is very wife unfriendly. Sorry.

lol, my girlfriend (we live together) doesn't really care, she was perfectly accustom to the PCH A110 I have, but this thing is way cooler and far more powerful. Her reaction to the bb is pretty aloof; as long as it works. ;)

+1 here too.
In terms of visual and ease of access priority I say:
1. Local Content
2. Hulu/Netflix/Vudu
3. Maybe easy access to social content(maybe)
3. Everything else

I agree fully, put all that web crap in a single spot on the menu. When i go to Movies/TV Shows, i want MY personal content to show.. not that crap.
Does ANYONE buy/use this device mainly for that web crap over their own personal file content? You'd be hard pressed to find many.

With comments like these it makes me wonder if they "get" what Boxee was intended for? Boxee has always been about merging the online content with the local content, but has had a huge focus on the online content. Heck thier business model is based of premium online content.
Im not saying people dont use Boxee for other reasons, its just that Boxee has been pretty cealr that the focus was online content (at least IMOHO). If we want Boxee to stay around then its goign to require them to this web content (especially the premium content) stage front so that people will sign up and use it, giving Boxee a revenue stream. Without it, Boxee wont make money as they are not charging for the software.
I do understand that people from all over the world use Boxee and for different reasons. Boxee from what they say is working on getting content to everyone. I think they will most likely tweak the viewing a little, but online premium content will always be front and center.

This is the Boxee equivalent to the revolt of the digg.com v4 release. And they admitted to not rolling out the new version properly(digg did). But they also explain that rolling back or ditching the new version is not always an option since they do need to move forward. What will happen, I have no doubt, is tweaking and bringing back some old features in the new layout. What they need to do ASAP i make this a priority before this gets out to the media and really affect sales. They should also make it clear ASAP what they are intending to fix and what they are not.

I've been waiting for the Boxee Box (albeit with some trepidation) since it was announced so long ago. I've been looking for something to replace my ancient xbmc xboxes for a few years now, and I liked that Boxee looked to be a very nice bridge between local and online content, that would also be easy for my wife and family to use, as well as finally not requiring me to constantly tweak even for ME to use.
That said, I've always been afraid that Boxee would slowly morph into something different than what many of us were sold in early versions. I didn't pre-order for that very reason...while I've appreciated the openness of Avner in various blog comments, twitter, etc. over the last several months, I've really not been sold that I can trust that the things that have been stated in the past will hold true as soon as they have a business reason to switch gears just to appease the content providers.
Now these fears are starting to come true. I am very frustrated that there was such a large-scale change in the 1.0 release. Unfortunately, software developers have in recent years lost the concept of how Beta should work. I think what happened was they got some feedback from beta users, and along with negotiations with content dealers decided to make changes "on their own" as the Box release loomed. The fact that the Mac/PC/Linux versions of 1.0 aren't available yet lead me to this conclusion. They started working on the final version for the box, and wanted to make an impact at the launch, so kept the changes close to their vest, with a sort of "ask for forgiveness not permission" policy.
In doing so, I'm most afraid they are going to majorly drop the ball in these first few months after launch. They delivered a product with one version, and then yanked it in front of users to the 1.0 version, which is essentially a new beta version imo, and soon they will release a new version that is their way of patching some of the complaints here. They probably won't be large scale changes many of us may want, but they will be frustrating enough to those that bought the Box and wanted it to "just work" - every time they turn around there is likely to be a new version to update that keeps shifting all of their settings and content around.
A release and fix later approach is going to bite them back in the end, and it appears that is the path they are taking.
I currently feel like I'm back to square one with my search for the ideal media box for my family, and that's extremely frustrating considering for the next several months at least 'll be able to continue using Boxee 0.9 on my mac and wonder 'what could have been'
Here's to hoping at this point the Boxee team doesn't make things even worse trying to make them better - I really hope this works out for them.

Agree entirely with your post, Boxee Box looked to be "The" media device available to the masses and not another box with crappy front end which required numerous patches to get it to do something useful.
Unless the guys at Boxee can do something pretty fast (before UK launch) then its a complete own goal.

I think 3/4 of the people here could afford to step down from their e-soap boxes, breath, and realize the Boxee Box is a far better alternative to the Apple TV (new and old) and Google TV. Let alone Roku and all the other redundant devices on the market. This concept of "Boxee abandoned it's principles" and the like is just nonsense. The entire concept of Boxee is for 10 foot user interface, and 1.0 looks much more refined in aesthetic. Anyone with an appreciation for good design can see the Boxee Box, as a device, a remote, and software, is a great take on an interactive living room and a beautiful exercise in design. As for the functionality, Avner promises to restore some features from Beta, so chill out.

On the wife/gf front, I think my girlfriend was more giddy about using the Box then I was and was enthralled with Boxee's ability to access content on Youtube so much easier than our 1st gen Apple TV. For those of you saying it's not wife/gf friendly, I beg to differ. She picked up on the Files=Local thing in a few seconds. Now choosing what to watch is a different story ... :p

Where can we get an update on the issues being addressed since the release of v1.0?
There were alot of complaints over the weekend and information seems to be all over the place from various posts here to twitter posts by Avner etc.
Can we have a Sticky post thats locked where on Boxee staff can update us with known issues/bugs/improvements, what issues are being addressed? when will fixes be rolled out? etc...

Just got my Roku box and now I have both. The problem I see here is that Boxee is tryin to be like Roku first. The biggest limit in my eyes to the Roku box is the lack of local media support. Other than that, it works beautifully if you have no local content to speak of. The biggest negative for the Boxee Box is the lack of Hulu Plus support. I love the Boxee UI (.9). But the problem I always had was the Hulu support. If one of these boxes can get both of these features on the same box, that is the box I think most of us would want and the one I would buy for every TV in my house. (I have 6)
I show off my Boxee PC for one reason only, I can stream my movies from my server to it and watch MY movies. That in my eyes is the best things about it. This new UI pretty much makes it just like the other devices out there and NOT worth the $200 when everyone else is below that.

Updates should start rolling soon. The updated UI is being worked on now and, speaking as a programmer, it's not a simple task to rework a UI in a short time. Avner has promised that the UI WILL do a better job supporting the local media. It's just a matter of hanging on for a little while until they can get the best of both worlds.
Avner and the boxee team are working hard to address bugs as well as a more "friendly" look and feel for the UI.

What i find amusing is that most of the complainers about online content have been members of the forum since November 2010. In other words, they didn't do their homework on what Boxee has always represented itself to be, which is not just local content, but heavily online content as well. As someone who has used Boxee on PC and on hacked Apple TV for 2 years, this software has always been about the advent of internet based content merging with home content use. It has never represented to be mostly a means to host your DVD's without the discs.
Did they maybe go more to the web side than the home content side in the UI... That's really a different argument.
But, online content is now, always was, a major part of the Boxee experience.

This is a bs observation. I registered in November to express my disappointment in my purchase but have used boxee for quite a while on my htpc's. I was using the current version of boxee when I placed my pre-order and we all assumed that 1.0 would be very close to beta .9 (this is the reason you put out a "beta" product). Which is not even remotely the case. For that matter the product on amazon still shows the old interface including functions that are no longer there (the side bar).
I wont put an update with the new ui on my htpc.

Is there anything that 1.0 does better than 0.9 except for adding additional online content? I was a long time user of 1st gen Boxee on Apple TV and have used 0.9 on the PC a bit. The only thing that pisses me off about 1.0 is the extra steps req'd to get to local content and of course the interface is generic compared to 0.9. I'm wondering if I should roll-back my Boxee Box to 0.9 or hold-out for the update? Thoughts?

Well my user experience is simply
- I opened box and connected up
- logged in and all the same as what I saw on my PC (cool)
- played around with that and get the shares going
- happy with that so far as I am a Eurolander and online content is slow at the mo.
- Apps are good
- Watched some stuff. It's even family friendly
- THEN
- forced update
- Boo hoo
- boring corporate grey appears and not so family friendly (when I say family friendly, I mean Wife friendly as she has a low low threshold for clunkyness)
- Lost features like, watched and genres for local content
- Back up nearly does what it is meant to, but not all the way back to home. This makes the Home screen pretty much bypassed.
Ohhhhh...... next update better be quick or rollback please. Then go into Beta versions for the love of God and keep the Boxee as stable as possible. This is meant to be opening Boxee up to the mass consumer and v0.9 does, but v1.0 doesn't. It's like a boring Philips menu....
You should see the UPC cable menus..... Blaaggghhh.... Those guys should get Boxee to work on their stuff.
Ok rant nearly over and I know not necessaryily the right place, but it just kept going.
I loved the gloss of v0.9. It was truly inspiring and way better than Apple TV.
