View Full Version : Boxee Box Say's it is not connected to internet

Ok, I bought the boxee box yesterday. I worked on it for a few hours last night. I called support - no help there, they are calling me back tonight with a "LEVEL 3" support.

It tries to connect to the internet ( 7 dancing yellow cube screen) and fails.

I tried wireless and wired ( the wire is from my working xbox). I can see the boxee box mac address in the status screen of my router. So I know the wire is fine.

I did the hold the power down for 20 seconds and got the red Boxee logo ( red,red,red,green,...). I restarted it and I got the same thing - can not connect to internet.

I got frustrated so left it running for a while.

I came back to it after an hour. It still could not find the internet but all of a sudden it starts working OFFLINE so I went to the system tools and I find that the firmware has been updated to 9.21.14 (something). So it must have go online to do that. I started watching a movie to see how it looked and after about 5 minutes the movie is interrupted by " Can't connect to internet".

It seems to me that it connects to the internet intermittently.

Can any one help (point me to something that can't be found with google) or is there a HW problem here?

I'm having online connection issues as well. I bought the device yesterday at BestBuy and when I tried connecting it to my D-Link Wireless G router, Boxee says it has connected to my wireless network, but can't connect to the Internet.

My Internet is working, so I don't know what's wrong. I did notice that if I disable putting a passcode to my network, I can connect online.

Could somebody please provide some input? Do I need to upgrade to a Wireless N router?

I had a similar issue last night with getting my wireless connected. You won't need to upgrade to wireless-n on your router because the wireless N card in the boxee box is backwards compatible with G and B.
I had hardwired mine in hope that the update would resolve the wireless issue but haven't had luck I event went as far as going into the configuration and manually settings my bssid and static ip info.

OK, it's not just me. I hope it is not a HW issue because the Best Buy where I got it is now out of stock. Fingers crossed that the FW update will fix it.

I've left mine on with a wired internet connection. Hopefully they can update it and it will work.

I have a "Level 3" tech calling me at 7:00 pm est. I'll let you know how it goes.

I have to toss my hat in as well. I just unboxed it and it will not connect to my Netgear Wireless-N router after several attempts. I know it is working properly because I just hooked up a new laptop to the same network in order to troubleshoot.

I purchased a wireless to wired ethernet adapter for use with my Xbox 360, so I'll have to give that a shot and wait until they come out with a software update to fix the problem. My feeling is that it is a firmware issue and not a hardware issue.

I'm having the same problem as well - wired connection works, wireless will not connect (to a DLink DIR-825). Have been talking to support with no resolution.

Add another hat.

I'm on a Time Machine, have tons of wireless devices hooked up, no problem.

However, once I turn on Boxee Box, my Time Machine loses its internet connection from my DSL modem. Everything connected to the Time Machine drops. Internet gone. Kaput.

Same thing happens when I turn off Boxee Box.

Every once in a while, connection is restored to the internet. But Boxee Box can't really recognize this - I'm unable to add any Apps at all because Boxee Box cuts off my internet connection once I turn it on, then once internet is restore, Boxee can't for the life of it get the Apps back on board.

Bit of a mess.

Sorry but the wireless on this is junk.

I have been trying to connect for hours to this box only to find that either there is a network password length limit or it doesn't accept certain characters. It wouldn't tell me my password was invalid though. The box would kick me back saying it couldnt connect then it wouldnt find any networks and ethernet wouldnt work till I restarted the device. If I tried again the device would lock up. If I tried again it would not see devices and this cycle continued even through tech support who were clueless.

Add to that, the wireless signal even 5 feet away is 1 bar when all my other devices even 50 feet away get full bars.

Finally, I cant even connect to the content on my Windows 7 machine. Boxee Box keeps asking for a username and password. I tried my login for that computer, tried the login for Boxee, tried the login for that computer but the Homegroup password and then tried disabling password protection on the computer altogether and nothing works. It doesnt even reject the login info, it just keeps asking for it over and over...

How the heck do you connect to shared content on a Windows 7 machine? The content was shared with the Homegroup at first but since then I have changed it to shared with everyone.

i feel bad because everyone posting on this thread is new to this forum, and possibly new to boxee as a whole, and unfortunately the seasoned beta users cannot help you much at all as we have no experience of these issues....

the ball is almost totally in official boxee support's court.

sorry!

Same here with the network problems.
It connects to the network, but can't connect to the internet. I've been using boxee beta for a while -- a broken boxee box is not what I've been looking forward to for the better part of this year. :(

I hope dlink's "higher level" technicians that are supposed to call us back will have some answers. The first guy was not much help. It took him 40 minutes to read his screen and figure out how to tell me to reset the boxee box. He was at a loss when power cycling and resetting to factory defaults didn't solve everything.

I think the factory default is: broken. Who's returning their boxee box?

Dang, I've got the same issue, wide open wireless N and G networks and the boxee box says it connected to the wireless network but wasn't able to connect to the internet...WTF?

Not gonna bash, just really REALLY hope Boxee fixes this issue with wireless ASAP!

I do see the time capsule's network in the wireless list.

WPA2 personal, connecting using PPPoE...default everything else I think. It's broadcasting a 2.4ghz and a 5ghz network, but the boxee box can only see the 2.4 ghz one.

1. Where are you located?
A. Lexington, KY
2. What router are you using?
A. LinkSys WRT300N
3. Have you contacted Dlink support?
A. No
4. Have you tried wired connections?
A. Yes and it works fine, even tried a wireless N gaming adapter and it works fine.
5. Where did you buy the box?
A. Amazon

Something to note, I've got no WEP/WPA security on my wireless network, just MAC filtering (added the boxee box mac to the list) and I even turned that off to see if I could get the boxee to connect with no luck. I've got the router on N with everything else set to auto and/or tried manual settings.

I also tried it in A/G only with no luck. Thankfully I have a linksys wireless gaming device and once I plugged that into the ethernet port of the boxee and selected "Switch to Ethernet" on the boxee, all works fine.

Hope some of this helps.

This seems like a major issue but I'm not sure it should be added to the thread in the announcement sections I'm maintaining regarding software issues working with prior Boxee versions that are missing/broken. Someone should startup a hardware issues thread so the devs/mods have a centeral place to point people to ?

All, try using Network Magic (http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/software/cisco-software-network-magic_stcVVcatId553232VVviewcat.htm). I originally had that on my computer when I bought my router a few years ago, but didn't bother installing it when I upgraded to Windows 7 earlier this year.
Anyways, it's a good program to manage devices on your network. There's a free 7 day trial too.

Once you install the program, go to the Wireless Protection area on the Status Center tab and then turn off "Network Lock". Once it's disabled, connect your Boxee to your network and once it's connected, re-enabled the "Network Lock".

That's it. It worked for me.

I am having the same problem, I have tired the boxee box with both DIR-655 and dd-WRT wireless routers. The problem seems to be with WPA or WPA2 encryption. I can connecot to either of the aforementioned WAPs if I turn encyrption off. I have tried every combination of WPA/WPA2 TKIP/AES but none work with this device.

I expect their will be a new update that will address these issues as it seems that the only solution is to forego encryption.

In case anybody suggests WEP. That is not a secure algorithm, and is worse than have security turned off, as it gives some less technical users, a false sense of security.

FWIW, been a long time XBMP and XBMC user and think this is a great product, just hope they can resolve the WPA issues.

Cheers,

Scott

Try the following:

1) Disable mac filtering
2) Disable wifi security ( WEP, WPA, etc )
3) Setup mixed mode in wireless (b/g/n)
4) Allow broadcasting of SSID.
4) Reboot Router
5) Reboot Boxee

Now try connecting to it ? Does it work ?

2wire wireless dsl gateway with 128bbit WEP-shared encryption didn't work. It was able to connect to the internet after changing the encryption to 128bit WEP-Open. No wireless encryption also worked. I coudln't use WPA because NDS does not support WPA.

OK guy's (Sorry for the delay)

I was on the phone last night with tech support for 1 hour and I got it to work!.

There was no MAGIC thought, all we did was tried to login about 7 or 8 times after rebooting the box, power cycle the box, unplug the power cord on the box. Then we powered the box down and on powerup, hold the power button down for 6 seconds then let go, your logo on the front of the box glows yellow and a new menu came up. One of the choices was to "restore factory settings".

We did that a few times and then it logged in. I watched a movie and left it running. Hopefully it will be running when I get home and it has downloadded the newest 1.0 Firmware.

Just remember I knew it was connecting to the internet because I was getting the temperature and time displayed in the top right corner of the screen periodically. I just couldn't login to my Boxee account.

Update:

Chatted with level 2 and then level 3 dlink support. I managed to tear apart my living room to get the boxee box connected to my router with an ethernet cable, then I updated the firmware to 1.0.

Still, the boxee box was able to connect to the network, but couldn't connect to the internet.

Then I tried disabling all security on my network to see if the box could connect to an an open network.

It can't.

The level 3 support guy will call me back "in a few days" because he has "no idea what's wrong".

I've had about 2 days now to play around with this thing and it really is a fantastic device except for one massive glaring issue. WiFi support on this thing is entirely broken.

I have upgraded to the latest software as of today which is 1.0.1.16125. My wireless router is a D-Link 525+. I use WPA2. Every other wireless device on my network (which is around 5 devices) is working flawlessly. Yes my security passphrase was correct, and yes I tried power cycling the router and the Boxee Box.

First major issue. The signal strength indicators in the network setup are entirely wrong. Wireless access points that are much further away have maxed bars, while my own access point has a single bar. To verify what the actual signal strength was I measured the signal strength of access points around me with Wirelessmon and kismet. My network was measured as the strongest signal around -40db. That's a great signal strength. So either gray is the colour of an actual bar or more likely, the software is not accurately representing the signal strength of found networks. I have tried to connect to a open network with full bars, obviously it couldn't connect, the signal strength was around -100 db. I'd be surprised if it this thing had a wireless interface with that kind of sensitivity.

Second major issue. The Boxee Box does not reliably support WPA or WPA2. I tested this with WPA2 first. Couldn't connect to the network, the error message was less then helpful. Tried again with WPA, same thing. I know you're thinking maybe his passphrase was wrong, well it wasn't I made sure of that. Tried also with WEP, which worked flawlessly. Finally, I disabled my network security all together, it worked as well. For obvious reasons I'm not going to leave my wireless unencrypted just for this device or use WEP.

This is ridiculous, it's 2010, WPA as a standard has been around since 2004 and to top it off this built by a company thats been making WiFi products for at least a decade. As far as I'm concerned this is unacceptable.

I've been in touch with D-Link support and I'm currently waiting for a level 3 support tech to call me back. Hopefully I can get this sorted out, I like this device.

Like most the owners of the boxee box, I can't connect to my own wifi network.

My network shows up with only one bar, even though my neighbor's networks (500+ feet away) show up with many bars.

I am using WPA2 and cannot change to WEP due to the large number of devices already configured for my network (20+).

The D-Link name was my biggest concern getting into this deal, and it looks like I should have used better judgment. If I can't get it working with WPA2, it's going back.

+1 on WPA2 network issues.

Running DD-WRT on a Linksys 160Nv3. Creating a Guest network with no protection resulted in no issues. Therefore I con only conclude that the Boxee Box is at fault and not my network.

Same exact issues as everyone. I am running a 2wire router with wep and it connects but every 20 or so minutes it drops off and I need to re-add the connection - worse part is I need to readd the WEP key also AHH!

My 2 wire is in my office and where the boxee box is there are no wired connections - I am tempted to move it to my family room since I have an extra wifi usb adapter, but STILL this should be working out of the box - FRUSTRATING.

I love my boxee box but it really seems like its flawed on all ends.

I'm having the same problem.

Connecting to a WPA2 AES network running on a Netgear WNDR3700 with dd-wrt on it and using a nine character alpha-numeric password. It works fine with everything from my laptops to my phone, so I'm guessing it must be something with the bbox.

I also get the "connected but no internet connection" error, although the wired connection works fine.

My signal meters also seem to be reversed (closer, stronger APs have one bar, farther, weaker APs have full)/\.

1. Where are you located?
2. What router are you using?
3. Have you contacted Dlink support?

5. Where did you buy the box?

5. Amazon.com

Having the same issues others have reported while trying to connect to wifi. Already tried changing wireless APs name, password, etc. Signal strength shows as 1 bar, router and Boxee Box separated only by a wall.

Was able to successfully upgrade to newest software with wired connection.

Other than wifi trouble, Boxee Box has been working great. Got it set up with my surround sound system last night. Would love to see the wifi issues resolved, though.

I've done the manual update process. I've restored to factory settings and updated again. Still I receive the message that Boxee Box is connected to my network, but cannot get internet connection.

I'm in Memphis, TN, did not contact Dlink, and I purchased BB from Amazon.
I have a Linksys WRT54GS ver.6, wireless G router with the latest, official Linksys firmware.
I'm using WPA-PSK AES security with a 21 character, alphanumeric passkey containing no special characters.

My Kodak printer had no issues, nor did my cell phone and 2 other PCs in the house. This was my first day with the Boxee Box and I'm stuck at the second startup screen trying to connect to WiFi, going to bed.

*Update: I tested Boxee Box at a distance of about 8 inches from my wireless router, still no joy. Plus, I do believe the others are correct in saying the wireless strength meter is exactly backwards of what it should be. My BB connection at 8 inches away from the router reports all grey bars. My neighbors all have more white bars than I do.

Here was my resolution, in case it helps anyone.

After calling tech support, we toyed around with my router encryption and noticed that the boxee connected just fine if I disabled the encryption. We then managed to switch from WEP encryption to WPA2, and voila! Everything worked fine. Tech support insisted that WEP encryption is supported and that I had the wrong WEP key (not true: I had the right key and doubled checked it with my laptop), but in any event it worked with WPA2. Note that my WEP key was all numerical, and my new WPA2 key is 8 non-numerical letters.

I hope this is helpful to someone out there.

I have been using WPA-PSK with AES and a 21 character, alphanumeric passkey with no luck.

Today, I did 2 things: changed AES to TKIP and shortened my passkey to 10 alphanumeric characters. All is working smoothly with WPA-PSK TKIP and the 10 character passkey. My Boxee Box is about 30 feet and 2 walls away on the same floor from the wireless router.

I never changed my security settings to OPEN, WEP, or WPA2. Hopefully I maintain a connection.

I posted earlier but this is how I finally got it working, not my ideal setup but its working like a champ now.

ddwrt
WPA-PSK
TKIP
16 Char. Shared Key

I was originally using WPA-PSK2 with AES but that wouldn't work. It did work without any encryption but that won't due. I'd prefer WPA-PSK2 but this will work until there is an update hopefully...

Also I don't care for the new interface but I'll get used to it I suppose. Just wish all the versions had the same interface. It's annoying going from one room to the next and having a different interface.

I changed from WPA to WPA2 with a WPA Algorithm of AES and now it works. I am using a 10 character shared key with mixture of letters and numbers. My router is a Linksys Wireless-G model #WRT54GS2.

The problem is that it does not seem to accept anything else than numbers and letters in the password. I had $ in my password, which gave me the same error. I replaced the $ by a number, which now gets the Boxee Box to connect properly.

Unfortunately, I feel there are several major issues with the wireless, not just one. I have a wide-open network, no mac filtering, no encryption and it won't connect. After reading through this thread, it appears others have had limited success with wireless...I finally broke down and hooked up a linksys wireless gaming device to the Ethernet port and it works.

I don't want D-Link to rush firmware updates and break working stuff, but I think we need some rather quick updates to fix what I think anyone would consider fatal flaws in the existing one....

I was one of the lucky ones with the "not connected to internet" message. So, I used wired, hoping that we would get a firmware update to fix the wireless "issues". While looking around the menus, I saw in "Settings - Information", that the Boxee Box has TWO mac addresses. One for ethernet AND one for Wi-Fi. As soon as I entered the Wi-Fi mac address in my router, my wireless connection worked. I know some of you have no mac address filtering and still have issues. But, for those with a setup like mine, it's good to know this.

Cheers!

I was having a problem with 'not connected to the internet' on wired as well, but as soon as I assigned a static IP to the box everything is fine. I'm on ATT U-Verse and I've seen flakiness coming out of their DHCP server on the RG before, so I immediately knew to try this.

Well I finally got my Boxee Box today. Went to set it up and I was experiencing the same "connected to network, but not internet" issues others were having. After a number of retries and a Factory Reset I renamed my network to remove the special character. Once I removed the special character I connected with no issues, so it appears as others have said there is an issue with special characters being either in the passkey OR the name.

Hi Teejwulf,

We have found 2 serious bugs in our wifi implementation that we have fixed and will be included in the next version to be released within couple of days.
We have found that WPA with AES cipher and WPA2 with TKIP cipher don't work. Could you configure your router/AP to WPA2+TKIP or WPA+AES and retry to connect to it?

1. Special characters in username/password are not supported
2. The combinations of WPA+AES and WPA2+TKIP are not supported. Try setting your wifi router to WPA2+AES or WPA2+TKIP.

Shay,

Can you also check network names with special characters over wifi? I was having a related issue where since my network name hada special character it would connect to the wifi, but not the internet. Once I changed the special character to a number, I was able to successfully connect. I dont ahve any special characters in the passkey so it wasnt that as the only thing I did change was the Network Name.

This might be fixed with the special charcter in the username\password though so I am not sure.

After 4 hours of research and tinkering, Boxee Box still will not connect to my wireless network.

Tried a ton of different network variations to get different results but I continue to get the same message, "Wireless network was connected, but failed to get an Internet connection."

Submitted a ticket to the support team.

AT&T U-verse 2wire router 3800HGV-B
WPA2-PSK (AES)
Wireless key all numerical values. Tried all alphabetical.
802.11 b/g
Broadcasting on Auto.
Managed to download a Boxee FW update using a neighbor's wireless.
Ethernet wire will not reach to desired location.
Plenty of other devices are on the same wireless network, work fine.

No idea what the problem is, perhaps a Wi-Fi hardware-related issue? Anyone in the same boat? Any ideas?

I'm still having intermittent problems with hardwired.

I'm using DHCP.

I tried to make a manual configuration but I kept getting
"Invalid IP address specified" when I save. I'm trying to set it to 192.168.1.55.

It may be the DNS server list. which is space delimited.
ie.
"111.111.111.111 222.222.222.222 333.333.333.333"

Any solutions?

This is what did it for me. The Box kept telling me "not connected to internet" but it wasn't until I read this post that I put in the other MAC address and Presto...I had an internet connection. I'd run into this kind of thing before with a removable ethernet adapter, so I wasn't surprised...in fact it was a 'doh' moment when I realized I should've seen this one coming...

thanks, ghislain!

This did not work for me. I'm incredibly disappointed. I've been a boxee user for well over a year, bought a Mac Mini so that I could use Boxee. I've been waiting for 6 days for this thing to arrive since I've ordered it from future shop. This is worse than finding out Santa Claus isn't real.

I'm not a networking newbie. I've been a networking professional for over 10 years, I've configured many firewalls, servers, VPNs, etc… and to date this is the worst experience with any network device or appliance. The second worst experience I had was with a D-Link router 8 years ago. I was nervous to pick up a D-Link product but I've been so happy with Boxee I figured the Boxee Box was a slam dunk.

It's going back to the store. I just wish I tested this hunk of junk before I had unhooked my Mac Mini and moved it to the basement.

Whoever was in charge of testing this product should be thoroughly ashamed and should be out of work.

Ironically I have zero interest in hooking this up to the internet. I only want to view local content.

Hi,

Could you let me know if the network name includes special characters, like '$'/'~'/...?
We're having problems with this type of characters, though it will be fixed in the next version.

If you'd like I'll try to debug your problem but you'll have to give me some data - in Boxee, go to 'Settings' - click 'menu' and then choose the tooth wheel icon.
When in 'settings', choose 'network' and the 'network' tab in it.
Configure your wireless network -
1. set 'network interface' to 'wireless'
2. click 'wireless network name', choose your home network and then type your password.
3. 'save and apply network changes'.

After the spinning wheel disappears, please send me the details you see in 'ip address', 'default gateway' and 'netmask' lines.
That might give us a clue.

Hi JuniorIII,

The 'Invalid IP address specified' error is caused by a illegal ip in any of the manual network configuration fields, i.e. 'ip address', 'netmask', 'default gateway' or 'dns server'.
We currently support only one manually configured DNS server so try putting just one for the time being.

BTW - if you use dhcp for interface configuration, what values do you see in the 'ip address', 'netmask', 'default gateway' and 'dns server' fields (after clicking 'save and apply network changes')?

I had my encryption set to WPA2+TKIP. I tried every combination and even tried 3 neighboring unsecured WIFI networks.

My router is an Asus RT16 with DD-WRT firmware. The final setting that worked was WPA2 with AES+TKIP.

Now that it's working I'm impressed. If the boxee box worked right from the start I'd be going back to the store to pick up a second one instead of returning this one.

I have had same issues since I got the boxee 5 days ago. It will say "boxee cannot connect to the internet" to start off, but after 25 seconds on any screen it will say in the top right corner that "internet connection has been restored" and boxee functionality finally works except:

1)Problem from there is it will never connect to my pc (and my library) unless it has internet connected from the get go.

***I have had it work before, but I have to cycle on and off between 3 and 10 times and will eventually work by itself, don't know why.

notes:
I noticed that the bars on the wifi are reversed as well.
I did enter mac wifi address with no luck.

I have yet to try changing the SSID from the generic "dd-wrt". Is the dash considered special character?

I just got my boxee box today (UK). Plugged it in, booted it up - couldn't find my wireless network. Connected it via ethernet and it downloaded and updated its firmware. Rebooted it and it still can't find the wireless network. Additionally, it is failing to identify any of my local media - which the software version happily does.

Very disappointed.

Really, how much testing was done on this? And when are these problems going to be fixed?

If your on 5Ghz then it wont see your network, Boxee box is only able to use 2.4 Ghz.

Now you say its failing to identify any of your files, we would need more specifics to help you out.

No, router is a Zyxel P-320W so 5Ghz isn't an issue. Local files are stored on a Thecus N2200 via a samba share. Does the boxee box use a different algorithm to identify media versus the boxee software?

I should add that I can browse and play the media on the NAS - it's just that my Boxee box doesn't identify any of them (the software identifies around 1700 ...)

I must say, even though everything is working fine for me now, minus a couple of hangs/reboots needed after lengthy use, I too have been wondering what the QC is at Boxee? Based on Avner's posts, even he seems to have been blindsided by some of the more embarrassing mistakes on the rollout of this product. I mean how could you NOT know that the remote was gonna have grey lettering unless you just didnt see one before it was released? Did any beta-testers live with this thing in their homes for a few weeks? Any of the engineers? And the apparently substantial difference (and I say that reservedly because I never dl'd the beta software) between beta and release-version UI's couldn't have been predicted to cause confusion? Boxee, great ideas, great programming, soft on hardware implementation/integration. Hopefully we'll all one day look back on this episode as one-time learning experience, while we enjoy a much-improved, stable, and solid product. As it is, I returned my cable STB yesterday...let the savings begin!!

I'm using wireless.
I have to turn the boxee off if it doesn't find the internet from the get go. (again it will eventually connect to the internet after 30 seconds if left on. BUT it will "error" looking for my own files on another pc.
If I do this "on, check, not connected, then off", every 5 times average it will eventually work. ie- find the internet immediately and allow full access to my files on the other PC.

I'm no tech, but I feel that the problem here is if it doesn't get internet immediately on start-up, it jumps the gun and flashes the error "no internet connection" it prevents access to files on the network, even as it will always connects to the internet 20-30 seconds later.
I see a fix being to allow more time (the 30 secs) to allow boxee to see and connect to the internet before it allows the user to use the system.
....just my thoughts...

OK, so I was having the problem many have mentioned - Boxee saying it was connected to the network, but could not reach the internet. My wireless is using WEP, and when Boxee was asking me for the network password I was giving it the WEP passcode - since it said it was connecting to the local network I assumed that was working. I went back and tried the configuration again, except this time I gave it a hex key value instead of the passcode and then Boxee could find the internet. (!) So either Boxee was not handling the WEP passcode properly, or it was saying it was connected to the local network when it was not - not sure what, but I thought I would mention it in case it helped others with this problem.

Hi adw99,

Thanks for the information.
We already refined the message ("..not connected to the Internet") which is misleading and confusing. Next version will include the change.
I will also look into a way to inform the user that he should enter the hex key and not the passphrase if he's using WEP.

Hi Shayz,

Still no joy using a WIRED connection with a manual IP 192.168.1.xx, the xx is not in the DHCP address space and also only one DNS entry. I've been connecting computers to the Internet since 1994 (Mosaic browser), so I don't think it is me. I have a SpeedStream 5200 DSl model and a Linksys WRT54GL ( linksys SW no Tomato or other sw) .

If I go to the network setup it connects (green logo), then when entering my user name password (no special chars just upper and lower case with numbers). It goes offline, a little message in top right "no internet connection" and a yellow logo. Maybe I have to type faster.

If I repeat this 8-10 times, I can eventually logged in. I can watch local media. I just goes offline and online (mostly offline) and tells me each time.

I can not access any Apps though. I usually leave it on, so it is only a problem when someone (wife, and kids) turns it off. I'd like to get this working just incase I'm having a HW issue (so I can take it back).

Has anyone else been having this issue?

I know most people use wireless but I only have a wireless G router and I would like to view 1080p with no pauses ( A dream anyway).

I love the boxee box's potential and I'm trying to be patient.

Well, factory reset complete, now i get the error "ethernet cord plugged in, but configuration failed"

switched to wireless,

error "Wireless network was connected, but Boxee can't connect to the internet"

Its actually worse now because i can't use local media anymore since i can't get past the initial setup after the reset. hehehe, factory reset screwed me.

so, unless this can be fixed by tommorow afternoon, I'm out. It's really too bad too, for the past 2 weeks i've been raving about the box, telling friends and family about it, they are all waiting until i give them a 1 month review of the device. Unfortunate my views are about to change.

Could you let me know the wifi details - wep/wpa/wpa2/..?
Could you try running the Network Wizard again and let me know the result (connected/not connected, ip addr, dns,...)?
The "...can't connect to the internet" is a misleading message and it usually indicates other problems - wrong wifi password in many cases (I'm not claiming that this is what's causing your trouble). Next version will include some refining of the error messages.

Still, the network wizard couldn't set it up, and just entering wifi/ethernet to autodetect didn't work. So, i hope this doesn't happen again, cuz if it does, i'll be immensly disappointed.

Hi,

I'm terribly sorry for the trouble you're having. Did you try to manually configure the wireless network?
To do that, please run the wizard and when it displays the list of available networks (empty in your case?), choose 'join other network'. Punch in your network name (ssid) and password and choose 'wpa personal' for security.
Please let me know the result.

Hi,

Sorry for all the troubles you're having with the wireless network.
Could you please let me know:
1. Your router model
2. If you have a a temporary way to connect via Ethernet? If so, it would be great if you'd send the logs to shay at boxee dot tv. Hooked up Boxee Box yesterday, got it on the wireless network, no problem. However, any time I attempt to do anything - add an app, change my time zone info, the network is dropped. The only way to reconnect is to reboot the Box.

Anyone have work-arounds, or hacks that can help diagnose and fix this mess?

Sorry to say but my Boxee Box experience so far has not been pleasent.
I have for hours tried all the suggested fixes but still the box have trouble finding any (there is at least 5 of them in my neighborhood) wifi networks. Ironically i have a d-link dir-655 router. If i do the factory reset i can manage to find my and the other networks for a minute or two but then it will go offline again saying there is no network to be find. I have seen many reports from boxee owners regarding the wifi issue on the webb, but also it looks like there is a lot without this problem. Is this a firmware issue or should i return the box for a new one?

So, just to add my 2 cents..... got my Boxee today. Hooked it to my tv, WIFI worked fine. Then I updated to the newest firmware release and WIFI was dead. Although it showed the name in the list of available networks, it couldn't connect. So after hours of playing around (rebooting, resetting ...) I chose the network name manually and tataaaa ... it worked!

Hi guys,
posted this in another thread also.
I've had the same problems as others - BB won't connect to my wlan router after performing the update - would reject the password (so it said).

I went through the thread and tried the hint to set the router security to wpa2 only (was set to wpa1+wpa2 before) and BB connects flawlessly again - all settings remained the same - password, IPs etc.

Just thought to let you guys know - another one where the "wpa2 only" did the trick.

Happy new year everyone.

Has this issue been fixed?

I have a modem with wireless router and a D-Link DIR-655 with wireless router. The Boxee box sees the modem wireless router and connects just fine. However, it does not connect to the DIR-655 with the same security settings and password. The network also does not show up in the network list. All other equipment has no problems connecting with the D-Link. Very strange, as the Boxee Box is made by D-Link!

I tried changing password settings etc. but it does not help. The stupid thing is that after setup, it connected to the D-Link until I did the firmware upgrade. It lost connection and I needed to setup Internet again, but it only works with my modem wireless and not with the D-Link.

The Boxee Box doesn't see the network, while all other devices in my home do (about 8 different devices i.e. PlayStation 3, MacBook, Android Phone). The network is set to visible.

Please help me fix this... not amused.

Wireless name: i9

Enable auto channel scan: true
Wireless channel: 12 (greyed out because setting above)
Transmission rate: best
Channel width: 20/40 automatic
Visibility status: visible

Security settings below are my normal settings, but even without security the Boxee Box cannot see my D-Link DIR-655 wireless network.

----------------

Security mode: WPA personal

WPA mode: WPA2 only
Cipher: TKIP/AES
Update interval: 3600

Password: something similar to this 'b0x33' (without the brackets), so a combination of letters and numbers.

Hope this helps...

There's a Boxee bug that prevents it from using channels above 12. We've fixed this bug in the expected release.
For the time being, you could manually set the channel to any other channels (1 - 11).

Got the same old "Can't make this happen" on trying to log-in/register, even though the "happy smiley face" showed I was connected.
I tried to manually set the IP address, and sometimes it froze, usually it displayed the following message: "Invalid IP address specified".

The problem was that my DHCP server (on my Level One WBR-3406TX wireless router) screwed up the Boxee Box's DNS configuration. It received 2 DNS servers, one of which had 4 (yes, 4!) digits in its last part (e.g. 10.0.0.2345). This is the cause for the "Invalid IP address" and why the Boxee cannot connect - DNS does not work.

It's a bug in Boxee. Weird, how does it represent IP address if not as a 32-bit integer?

Anyways, the fix? To manually configure the DNS. Set it to either the IP address of the router or the DNS server received from your ISP. You can also look in your Windows network connect to get these details. That's it.

Enjoy!

...had 4 (yes, 4!) digits in its last part (e.g. 10.0.0.2345)...

Same 4 digit DNS IP address issue here (eg. 123.123.123.1234) Boxee Box configured via DHCP, firmware 1.0.3.17064. I'm using a Dlink DIR-300 router with WAP.

Also noticed an IP address conflict, Boxee box didn't seem to renew it's DHCP lease at power up and assumed an IP already in use on the network

I changed my router wireless security settings to "WPA2 Only" as suggested in another post and re-ran the Boxee network configuration wizard. This has rectified issues for the time being.

If this can be of any help to anyone, I've had an issue similar to what is posted here but found a solution.

My Boxee Box was unable to connect to my pancake Airport Extreme, nor was I able to connect it to the Internet through an ethernet connection.

My Airport Extreme was configured as part of a WDS network (range extended through a Airport Express) and had MAC Address filtering enabled.

Turning off both the WDS and the MAC Address filtering allowed the Boxee Box to connect to the Internet. I tried turning the MAC filtering back on, but that prevented Boxee from accessing Internet, so I assume this is what caused the issue.

I switched the network to WPA2 (honestly, it should've been done a while ago) and configured the Boxee Box with the proper password and it all worked perfectly.

Is it possible that the MAC address sticker on my Boxee Box didn't contain the proper MAC ID for my machine ? I couldn't find the MAC address in the software, so I couldn't double check the sticker value with a value read within the Box itself.

Hi Guys,

I have a question. I have a wired ethernet connection to my Boxee Box and stream my files from Windows Home Server. When I first setup my Boxee Box it was fine. Connection ok, I am able to map all my drives and everything works fine. Day 2 all the same: good connection, everything works. Day 3: Boxee cannot connect to internet. I haven't changed anything, but for some reason he cannot connect through my wired connection. When I plug my ethernet cable into my laptop I get an immediate connection, so it's not a internet issue.

Hi
My Boxee Box just started having this going offline issue.
I've had it since December of last year and just within the last month or so,
while watching a movie (Netflix for example), it will say retrieving like it's buffering data and then a yellow icon will pop up and it will say something to the effect of Boxee in offline mode, can't connect to the internet.

It is connected via wireless through a Linksys E3000, when this happens other devices, (iPad, etc.) seem to connect fine through the wireless.
If I reboot the Boxee, it works fine again maybe a half hour or maybe for weeks before I see the issue again, it's very intermittent.
I'm not sure that it's related, but I think it seems to have started about two firmware updates ago, prior to that I've not had any issues after getting it set up and running.

Is this a hardware issue that I need to return the Boxee for?

Thanks
Harry

Bought a BB in January, and I had zero internet connection issues with it until the device had a total meltdown a few weeks ago and I had to RMA back to D-Link. Just got my "new" (refurbished) BB as a replacement a few days ago, and suddenly I am experiencing near-constant connection issues wherein the device suddenly stops playing files and announces that there is no internet connection, despite the fact that I live in a building with a flawless T1 line and none of my other wireless devices lose connection in any way.

After my experience talking to D-Link's abysmal customer service department earlier this month, I'm really pretty upset with the idea of RMA'ing another device only days after receiving it. Also, I plan on raising hell if I'm expected to pay to ship a second broken BB back to D-Link when I should have received a working device in the first place.

I'm in Oakland, CA, and I use an Apple Airport Express router.

Thoughts?

I had the same problem with RC1 - V1.02.222.
After installing it I got the message that Boxee cannot connect to the internet.

I'm using a wired connection, the Boxee Wizard reported successfully connecting to the internet and the weather icon was bringing up the weather.

What didn't work :
- Home screen didn't show any video clips (bottom half of screen was empty)
- Apps wouldn't appear

I tried restarting 3 times and that didn't work
I tried reinstalling the last official firmware release... Same problem

I ultimately ended up doing a factory reset and upgraded back to RC1 and all is fine now.

I'm having the same wireless issue that has been reported previously.

I'm hoping this is the right place to post--I've searched the forums and this seems like the most appropriate thread.

When connecting via wireless, I have a very long and cryptic password that includes several special characters. The length is almost 30 characters long if it helps.

In any event, I receive the typical boxee message saying "able to connect but not to the internet" type thing.

Just thought I'd throw this out there in the event that the latest revision was thought to have fixed this issue, because it unfortunately didn't. I have a lot of devices and prefer to use strong passwords, so resetting the password to something simple isn't an option. Also, with the number of devices I currently have, I wouldn't want to reset all of the passwords either--that'd make for a few hours of work!

Also, I unfortunately can't run a network cable to the boxee's location. :(

Other than this, I have to say I'm *very* impressed with the boxee. I love it, and love all the apps and extensibility it has to offer--kudos to the makers for a great package!

I was tearing out my hair with this problem.

Though I just bought it in Aug 2011, I had the original summer 2010 firmware on it. I have no flash drive stick to manually update the firmware. Factory reseting it did not help. I experienced this non-connection problem. Came to this forum and for whatever crazy reason, this old thread was the first one that seemed most relevant. One guy had the right solution.

I could not connect with either Wired or Wireless.

Solution:
Using Wired connection, allow Dynamic IP to auto-populate all forms.
Then change to Manual IP, keep everything the same, except go down to the DNS category and delete the two sets of IPs that auto-populated there.
I replaced that entry with the OpenDNS DNS server 208.67.222.222

It worked auto-magically after I tried logging in to Boxee with that change.

So I've had the boxee since I preordered it via amazon. Absolutely love it when it works...but I have to post my problem because its driving me nuts.

Here it is.

When its working everything is fine. Shut it down, then it starts.

Can not connect to internet. Yellow icon. One ticked off consumer.

Shut down, reboot. Problem still there. Do this three times, then it finally turns on. So basically it takes me 15 minutes to connect it.

Setup: Connected via a wired network. Gigabit switch and router in the basement panel where everything ties in. Yep, I

Please help. Anybody? Love the BB, but this is driving me bonkers.

Thanks a bunch.

Guys

I want to help but i need as much information as possible ...

1. Where are you located?
Copenhagen, Denmark

2. What router are you using?
Dlink DIR-655

3. Have you contacted Dlink support?
No, wanted to troubleshoot myself first. Besides I did not find a Danish support number.

4. Have you tried wired connections?
No, my TV + Boxee are in the living room, whereas my router is in the office.

5. Where did you buy the box?
Føniks A/S
Tlf.: +45 7060 6064
kontakt@fcomputer.dk

I just bought the Boxee box today, and I am not pleased with this at all!

I get the same error: Boxee cannot find my network on the list initially. When I type in the SSID as well as the pw I get "Wireless network was connected, but Boxee can't connect to the Internet".

I started out with WPA or WPA2, TKIP or AEP. Since changed this to WPA2 and AEP only. My network is not hidden.

Can you go to Settings>>Network>Network and post all the settings/values from that screen?

Try

Go to settings --> Network --> Start network wizard
Reboot (Shutdown and Start)

If you enabled EDID,
Restore firmware

If it didn't resolve, return the box and exchange with another one.

hi Darcilicious,

Please see my wireless router settings attached.
That's good to know, but what he really asked you for are the network settings of your Boxee Box, found in the menu page he described how to open.

Those settings can then be compared to your router settings, to see if they match properly. But no such comparison is possible until you also post the network settings of your Boxee Box.

Best regards: Ronald

aaah, sorry. The thing was that I could not access anything in my Boxee Box. The first page was where BB wanted to search for a network.

However, I managed to solve the issue, which was related to the Windows network settings in Windows Vista.

I chose Control Panel -> Network and sharing -> chose "adjust" just under the Internet icon -> here I chose "Private" instead of "Public". Then my network appeared on my Boxee Box.

The above is rather strange actually as I originally chose "Private Network" when setting up my Wi-Fi network. Hence it ought to have been Private all the way through, but it wasn't. Maybe it is because that "Public" is the Windows recommended setting. I don't know.

Bottomline is that it now works.

Happy days! :D

Hopefully this might help others.

Hi there,

Sorry if I'm not posting in the correct thread. I looked around the forum for an appropriate place to post my issues and this seemed to be it.

I'm having the same issue that most posters on this thread, where Boxee can connect to the wifi but then gives me the "can't connect to the internet". Which is odd, because I can browse Youtube and navigate on most apps, but can't access files on my computer over the network.

I am using my iMac's airport as a router, with an open wifi network sharing my regular ethernet connection. I can't plug the ethernet cable on the boxee box as my TV is wall-mounted on the living room.

My settings:
Boxee
Boxee Version: 0.9.21.14131
Build Date: Sep 16 2010 (I can't update, it starts to then gives me a "Downloading upgrade failed" message)

Connection
ethernet connection shared through iMac's built-in Airport
no password (I'd like to use some kind of password - when I try it Boxee can't seem to connect)

Are there known issues between Boxee and Airport? Is there a fix on an update? I can always try to update it at work or something.

Thanks a lot.

2wire wireless dsl gateway with 128bbit WEP-shared encryption didn't work. It was able to connect to the internet after changing the encryption to 128bit WEP-Open. No wireless encryption also worked. I coudln't use WPA because NDS does not support WPA.

My Boxee Box worked like a champ for over a year, then just a few days ago I got the "Can't Connect to the Internet" message. WTF? Nothing about our network changed. But changing to WEP-Open did the trick. Thanks for the suggestion, mapple.
