I'm new, Hello everybody!
I installed Xdsl v0.6 Final on to a modified xbox..
More Info: (http://www.x-dsl.org/wiki/Main_Page)
You can download here: http://www.x-dsl.org/wiki/Download
Boxee is now running through XDSL on the xbox. I'm still waiting on a invite code, but I will post more details and information whenever I have tested everything.
I can't wait to tweak XDSL and replace XBMC with Boxee on my Xbox 1.
Is anybody interested in how I did this? I will post pictures and information ASAP!
To mods, admins - The process in which I used is completely legal in the United States and to my expert knowledge does not violate copyright law in anyway. :)
Update 1: Thank you for the code. Tomorrow I will upload pictures and information regarding Boxee on the xbox. Cheers.
Update 2: I'm heading home for my Grandma's 80th birthday. I promised a lot in the first post, but I promise that I'm still working very hard on it. I'll be back soon with pictures and more information!
Update 3: I'll be back on December 1st - I'm labor boy when my family is in town. All I can think about is Boxee on an Xbox. Anyway, Peace and love. Happy Thanksgiving!

Sweet idea. I have an old Xbox sitting around that I run XBMC and GentooX on. Your approach would give me the best of both without having to boot in and out of Linux. I'll send an invite your way, if you promise to update the thread with how it works and performs.

Sounds cool would like to know how you did it. My local game store is selling original xboxs for 40 bucks. This might be a reason to pick one up.

I'm new, Hello everybody!.
@tdhz77, Hello. Thanks for sharing the xbox web-links. I happen to have an old xbox sitting here collecting dust and turning it into a boxee player would be simply awesome. Now to figure out what this "mod" stuff is all about...

I'll admit it, this thread has struck my interest; I was just in the process of softmodding my original Xbox. I've got XBMC installed currently and I just grabbed xDSL and I'm starting to compile Boxee on a separate Linux server. I've been looking at Boxee and wondering if this would be possible to run of an original Xbox. Hopefully it will have enough power to run properly.
I'm going to start trying to load xDSL in the morning and if that boots properly, I'll give Boxee a try. I'm not sure how to run Boxee yet, it has finished compiling but I'm trying to figure out the install process and how to start and run Boxee. If I have any results I'll post what I figure out and I'll be watching this thread as well. :)

The problem is that just "compiling" Boxee isn't enough. There are closed source binary bits that I doubt would run on the XBox, no matter what you did.

I'm still learning Boxee but I don't think there is anything that couldn't run on an Xbox. xDSL is a x86 compatible distribution, and if we can get Boxee on virtually any distro like Ubuntu and openSUSE; then this should work as well in theory. I'm speculating here but I would guess the major issue would be resources since they are rather limited on this platform.

Yes I'm struggling....

Yeah, even binary compatibility isn't enough. I've been hacking on my openSUSE port for a while now and success is still limited. Binaries built on one distro almost never work "out of the box" on another, even going from Ubuntu 8.04 to 8.10, unless particular care is taken and I don't think the devs are willing to sink the not inconsiderable time it would take to fix this yet.

I'm also interested in a port for the Xbox.. As I also have an old Xbox collecting dust. Which video card is inside? Does it support GLX?

I'm really eager to install Boxee on this xBox I just got. A friend gave it to me just for this purpose...to install Boxee on it.

I don't have an xbox, but I don't see why Boxee couldn't run on it... It uses a 32 bit Pentium 3 processor.. so the closed source binary bits (the flashplayer, which equals hulu, cnn, c-central, etc) COULD work, in theory... Just it requires a bit more hacking, due to the differences in *buntu and other distros.

One of the main problems I ran into was that the system is very RAM limited (64mb) also the GPU is rather limited as well. For more technical specs on the system you can view them here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox#Technical_specifications)
I need to pick up a new box and load the more 'Linux compatible' Cromwell bios. It's not currently possible with the stock bios to boot anything other than the 2.4.x kernel. So we are limited to an Ubuntu release such as 5.10 (there was a release for Xbox specific hardware under 5.10 called xUbuntu that still boots 2.4 kernels. A lot of the tools required to compile Boxee are not available on that old of a distribution.
If we can get a newer release version up and running on the Xbox, there really isn't a reason why we can't custom compile our Boxee deb with that release on a typical x86 desktop machine and then just move it over.
I've gotten xUbuntu to boot on my Xbox but I think I am being hamstrung by trying to keep it as stock as possible so that I can still play games with it. I need a good dev X'box' :)

I have an xbox that I was thinking of doing this to as well. Currently it has XBMC running on it, and a number of games coppied to the HDD. I need to wait till after I get a new DVD drive for it over the holidays before I can start testing configurations. I was going to start by trying to install Xebian on it unless someone would recommend a different distro.
Once I get that working (probably after Jan 1) I would be willing to test and document trouble/solutions at getting boxxee running. In order to do that I would need an invite however. So if anyone feels like being generous I would appreciate it.
Thank you and good luck to all other working on getting boxee up and running on an xbox.
