I noticed today that there was an Apple TV update. I performed it and it wiped Boxee off. Just a little heads up.

I think it happened when I restarted the Apple TV. Go to Settings > General > Update Software. Its there...

Or... maybe its a secret update that apple released only for me ;)

This is defiently the biggest problem with the Appletv. The updates kill your hack and updates.

sudo bash -c 'echo "127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com" >> /etc/hosts'

I've turned off auto updates, hopefully this update isn't important, just adding some new crap.

Yeah, I just updated my tv to 2.3 before running the patchstick, and now it won't recognize the patchstick. It skips right on to the startup movie. Serves me right for updating before jumping on here. :(

How do we enter these unix commands on the AppleTV?

Yeah I foolishly updated and it wiped Boxee for me as well. Dang!
giyad: have you been able to re-install?

Has ANYBODY been able to install Boxee on ATV 2.3?

Once turning off auto updates can you do a manual update? I can't remember what the menu options are, and I'm not sitting in front of my AppleTV.

Wait a minute... I performed the update, thats why I posted. It wiped Boxee, but I was able to patch again.

When I check the firmware version though it says 2.2... but I did notice a change in the Settings section, Audio and Video have become one, and they added AirTunes.

I read one vote for the Patch Stick being broken in the latest build, and one vote that it is still working. Is there a consensus as to whether or not the Apple TV 2.3 build broke the patch stick?

For all of you brave souls who have tried it, please chime in.

what happens is due to the update 2.3 from apple
that blocks the acess to apple tv the update links to boxee are there but no ones home. so for those who have boxee shut down the update on the apple tv and don't update until further notice.i'm not sure if the latest update from apple for the computer blocks it as well I would look into that aspect form the boxee crew good luck

forgive my ignorance, but since when does ATV auto-update? I've never had that happen before--always went to update in settings....

In short, PatchStick and Boxee are both broken in the 2.3 release, but they hope to have an update within a day or so. Read more here:

I don't know what happened with my Apple TV, because I performed the update but its still in 2.2... Its still in 2.2 but I have the AirTunes support! This is just weird, but I can't complain haha.

So I guess the verdict is 2.3 breaks Boxee, that really sucks because if this will happen everytime the Apple TV updates, its not very comforting

ssh frontrow@appletv.local
in terminal. Password is frontrow.

Managed to exec these commands before my ATV went into the update. Things are still working fine under v2.2 - here's looking forward to an update to support v2.3!

Thx,
Darren

Is there a way to remove the auto-update killer at a later date? I'm not sure I want to block the updater if every time I have to update I'm going to have to manually pore through some wiki or awkward TV set of poorly written instructions to manually upgrade through terminal each time.

Doesn't the Apple TV ask you if you want to update anyway?... just like osohardy said

Yeah mine hasn't auto updated yet and asks for manual update, but I thought I read elsewhere that sooner or later the ATV will prompt you to update regardless.

I just wanted to know that if I block the updater just to be on the safe side, is there a way to unblock it rather than to resign myself to stumbling through Terminal trying to figure out how to manually update in the future.

Especially since most of the time you ask people how to do something vias SSH you get answers like 'Just copy the file to the ATV using SSH' and I'm all 'Yeah I'm a dumb ass, HOW do I copy the file to ATV via ssh. If I already knew the command line, what would I be asking for help for?' LoL.

This is what I did. The 'echo' line wouldn't work for me ('bash' couldn't be found on the path and it wasn't sitting in /usr/bin).

On my laptop:
> ssh frontrow@192.168.11.40
Password: frontrow

(Note that your ip address will definitely vary; look it up via the AppleTV's settings menu or from Boxee's settings menu)

(the first time you do the 'ssh' it will ask you if the computer you are connecting to is really the one you want to; type 'yes' and return, then you'll get the 'Password' prompt)

There, I get the bash command prompt:

bash $

At that command line, type:

$ sudo nano /etc/hosts

'nano' is a nice visual editor for a terminal window. You'll see a screen with a bunch of comments, then ip addresses followed by names.

This file basically means 'Whenever a program asks for <the name on the right>, send it to <the ip address on the left>'.

Use the down-arrow to get down to the end of the file, and add:

127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com

This will forward any requests to Apple's software update server to "localhost" (the local loop-back). Since you don't have Apple's Update Server running on your ATV, any calls to see if updates are available will heretofore fail.

Hit Ctrl-X (exit), Y (yes, save the file). Type 'exit' to log out of ssh on the AppleTV.

TO UNDO:

Do all the above, except once in nano, go down to the line above and put a '#' character in front of it, so it looks like:

# 127.0.0.1 mesu.apple.com

Then exit, saving the file.

I am not sure how soon changes here take effect. They definitely take effect next time you boot. I just looked for some Google knowledge now, and I see that the 'lookupd -flushcache' command (from the ATV bash '$' prompt) would do it without rebooting. Untested, and the ATV OSX installation is missing some key command line utilities, so that may not work. If all else fails, reboot.

Once you've commented the line back out again and rebooted/flushed lookupd cache, you should (again, untested here) be able to go right into the Update screen from the main AppleTV interface and see the official updates which are available.
