View Full Version : switching b/t boxee and other apps with the remote

Hey folks,
While I'm patient and optimistic about mythtv support in a future boxee release (hint hint), I also know that its probably a lower priority.

In the mean time, there are times when I'd like to be able to switch b/t boxee, eyetv and maybe frontrow. Before moving to Boxee I was using SofaControl, but it doesn't seem to play too nicely with Boxee (yet).

Anyone have suggestions?

One thought is to find a way to trigger something (maybe sofacontrol) to launch when I quit Boxee, then I could use it to launch EyeTV and/or FrontRow... any launchd experts know if that is even possible?

Looking forward to brainstorming some solutions - thanks everyone!

I use remote buddy and it works fantastically. The developer added Boxee support in a recent release.

You got Remote Buddy to work, eh?

I have my remote set to bring up the Remote Buddy menu when you click and hold the menu button but the Remote Buddy menu flashes up there for a second but then goes away.

I can't seem to call up the Remote Buddy menu when in Boxee. Aside from that I love Boxee and Remote Buddy though :)

Any thoughts?

I use remote buddy to get into and out of boxee. With the latest version I can select any of the apps that remote buddy has access to, including boxee, itunes, front row, safari and the virtual mouse.

Once remote buddy launches boxee I use the remote to control the boxee interface, or the front row for that matter. Then when I'm done with boxee or front row I exit them. Once you are back to the finder you can use remote buddy to launch anything else. I really use it as a launcher for front row or boxee.

Hope that helps.

p.s. I don't do the click and hold for bringing up remote buddy. I just use the single click menu button option.

i use remote buddy to enter boxee and i suppose i could just exit boxee through the menus but i was trying to avoid having to close it though. not a big deal though. i can just exit. good work around - thanks.

i left the menu button as default (activate Front Row) to keep things simple for the wife pre-boxee. i think we may have to sit down and have a Boxee/Remote Buddy/Harmony Remote training session soon :)

this feature has also recently been added to Plex, again i would assume as both are XBMC based it will be added very shortly.

plex is a fork... my understanding is it's patches are not submitted upstream to xbmc.

I use remote buddy to get into and out of boxee.

This is what I've been doing too... once boxee launches, it takes over until you exit it... then remotebuddy resumes

I just installed remote buddy so that I can jump out of Boxee and do other things. The problem I ran into was that, for some reason, when Boxee is in full screen mode the remote buddy menu gets over drawn by Boxee when invoked. The quick fix I came up with was this: I added a mapping to remote buddy to drop out of full screen mode when I press and hold the back button. This is a kludge though.

Note: if you choose to embrace this Remote Buddy kludge, it's important that you set the delay for this action so that it doesn't keep firing over and over again. (I think I used 1 second)
