View Full Version : "Password incorrect" login problem

When I start the Boxee application on OS X 10.5.5, I only have the option in the center to "Add New". I click "Add New" and then enter the requested username/password that I used to activate my boxee account (NOT the forum username/password), but I always get error:
"Login Password incorrect, please try again."
I am able to login to app.boxee.tv successfully using the same boxee username/password without any problems but NOT in the actual app. I also tried changing my password which works in the web site but not in the app.
What am I doing wrong?
Is there a log file somewhere on OS X that I can view for debugging?

A bug I'm pretty sure is in the password is that it *cannot* start with a number or a punctutation. Start the password with a letter and see if that helps.

if you are still having problems pm your username and password..

I thought the same thing about the password bug and changed my password to all letters including the 1st character, all lowercase, but I still can't login via the Mac application. However, the same password works successfully from the apple tv login and the web site.
marcel:
What does "pm" mean in your sentence "pm your username and password"? Thanks for your offer to help.

Same here...
I can log in to the Boxee site, but not the app. I can also log into the forums here, but I understand that is a separate login unrelated to the app. I have not received an email confirmation for the Boxee account yet though.

For the record, my password begins with a lowercase letter.

did you create an account on boxee.tv? (as appose to the forums)

It turns out it works just fine when I'm not behind my work proxy. Too bad you have to log in to change the proxy setting, d'oh catch 22. Also, respecting the Mac's system-wide proxy setting would be a nice feature (Firefox doesn't do it either).

yes, i did create an account on boxee.tv. if i'm not mistaken, you have to do that to get to the point where you can download the software. i meant it literally when i said "i also am having the exact same problem..."
** Update **
I saw on the site where I could have the service resend an account validation. I did that, got the email from Boxee, validated and now I'm good to go. Sorry for wasting your time here!

@j2sheck login into boxee's website with your user credential and then you will be prompted to resend your activation email or even change your email account...

My login/pass do not work on the site even though they used to (or at least I used to be able to and my password record is now wrong) Is there a "lost password" feature of the site that I am missing?
EDIT: I found it by attempting to re-use the activation email link, which brought me to this link (http://app.boxee.tv/auth?redirurl=/home), which has a lost password option. This would be a useful addition to the front page login.

I'd been messing arround with the settings on the Network/Settings page and had enabled HTTP proxy and filled in the proxy host and port settings (trying to see if I could get BBC iplayer outside the UK).
When I then logged out, I couldn't get back in because of an 'incorrect password", even though it never changed.
The only correction I found was to uninstall boxee and then reinstall. With the new install, those proxy settings had been reset to default and my password then worked. Must be some bug. Fortunatley this only happened on my MacBook Pro - not the ATV. I would have had to do a factory reset on that to uninstall Boxee, followed by a 120 G sync to get back to square on. Not fun!:)

I've been trying to get boxee running on Mac OS 10.5.2. Each time I attempt to log in, it says, "Connecting...", and then apparently times out after thirty seconds or so, saying "incorrect password, try again." At first I had hoped it was just that I had created my account and needed to give it some time, but it logs in and runs perfectly on Ubuntu 8.10.
Another curious thing is, unlike in Ubuntu, if I intentionally put in an incorrect password it continues to time out, leading me to believe it's not getting to the boxee servers.
I have no proxies enabled, and am connected to the internet currently.
I don't mean to revive a six day old topic, but this seemed the most apt place to post this. Any suggestions?

I had same problem and the same solution "resend account validation". It seems that if you register (and get confirmed) before downloading and installing Boxee you get this "password unrecognised" error message. Logging back in to the Boxee site with your original (validated) id and password will bring you to the screen with the yellow "resend account validation" strip at the top. Thanks all for the solution.

I have now registered twice with Boxee. Neither user name/password combination works on the Apple TV. My user name and password are fairly conventional i.e. no weird characters. I note that others have had the same problem but I don't see a fix.
Help!

I have the same problem, but for me it seems even stranger. I used to be able to log in fine without any problems - both to the app and website. Then one day it told me I'd entered the incorrect password and it hasn't accepted it since. I've reset the password and still no joy. It seems a lot of people have this problem, can someone please document and troubleshoot this bug?
Thanks in advance

I can not sign in to boxee either. I am at university on the university network so I am behind a proxy. There is no way to change the proxy settings in boxee, so I can not log in. Like another person said in here its catch 22.

Not 100% if the proxy settings work ,you can try and edit the guisettings.xml with the appropriate parameters and see if that works..

What on earth does that mean? I'm having the same problem... seems it would be easily fixed if either a) users could somehow adjust proxy connection settings BEFORE they login or b) there was an easily accesible (like through the "System Preferences" app) preference pane where you don't even have to have the Boxee app running to adjust connection settings. Seems asinine that you would have to login to fix your connection settings.

I found this from one of the admins in another thread. I tried it and it works, so no factory reset this time!
remove the guisettings.xml (this holds the proxy info),you will need to ssh into Apple TV. from Linux and Mac OSX, use the ssh command line via the terminal.
1.ssh frontrow@{ip address}
2.To retrieve your IP (boxee>settings>general>IP or ATV>settings>general>about>IP
3.enter Password "frontrow"
4.rm -rf ~/Library/Application\ Support/BOXEE/UserData/guisettings.xml
5.restart boxee

Hi,
I had the same problem, I'm behind a proxy and I couldn't log in until I edited ~/.boxee/UserData/guisettings.xml and changed the part where proxy configuration is located:
<network>
<enableinternet>true</enableinternet>
<httpproxypassword pathversion="1"></httpproxypassword>
<httpproxyport>8080</httpproxyport>
<httpproxyserver>myproxy.net</httpproxyserver>
<httpproxyusername></httpproxyusername>
<sep2></sep2>
<usehttpproxy>true</usehttpproxy>
</network>
Save it and try to log in again.

Why does this even need a password? I could understand for accessing streaming media, but I just want to be able to access files on my own hard drive.
This is really infuriating. I bought an ATV for this exact purpose only to find nothing but frustration, and a situation where problems go unresolved for the better part of a year. This is obviously a MAJOR problem, and it needs to be addressed. Even MICROSOFT would have had a patch out after this long.
I sure would like to watch videos on my TV guys. How about we allow access to local media (and SETTINGS) without a password? The way this is set up now is asinine.

in my experience when this happens its the fault of setting a proxy (or not setting one correctly if you need one to get out) the only way to resolve the bug in my past has been to delete the user data folder or just uninstall boxee altogether, kind of a pain I know.
If you having the opposite problem and you need to add a proxy follow the directions in this thread with guisettings.xml
From a development standpoint id say the easiest way to get around this is for the boxee team to include an option on the login screen to enter/clear proxy settings

Its alpha software.....no one ever said this was going to be a seamless experience. If your not up with dealing with bugs than you not cut out for an alpha product, take your negativity elsewhere. Boxee has kept me happy since the beginning and now I am cable free in my apartment and my roommates love it, so for alpha software id say its pretty damn good

Just a heads up for the programmers and users of Boxee trying to use the proxy function to access blocked conted from other regions.
1. Boxee apparently also uses any proxy settings during the login process. The anonymous proxees I tried always lead to login errors.
2. If you set up a proxy and turn it off before exiting Boxee you will also get a login error on the next login.
3. If you set up a proxy and turn it off, you will not be able to add repositories.
4. Deleting the guisettings.xml as described in this thread cured the login password error, but I was still unable to add repositories.
5. My advice is to stay away from the proxy settings. My only solution was to delete all the Boxee folders on my AppleTV and reinstall Boxee.
There is a promising vpn plugin for Boxee described in this forum which is probably a better solution for those trying to get at regionally blocked content.
Despite the prooblems, it is after all alpha software, kudos to the programmers for this very nice software!

I'm having this same problem on an AppleTV after having re-patchsticked it. The above procedure didn't work for me.
I can't get into Boxee because it will not allow me to add/create a user, as every time I do so it says the (NEW) password is incorrect. How can a password for a new user be wrong?
I am able to access it through Cyberduck so if there is a file do delete, I can do it there, but so far I haven't seen any one clear answer to this.

I am only having this problem when I use a different VPN, for instance I am in the uk and when I use a usvideo vpn I get the login error on boot up, but when I revert back to my uk settings, all is good. I have a boxee box latest firmware

My problem was that the Boxee recognized my shared folders, but I would get a Username and Password request.
This was because I was using and Administrator account with Windows 7. I created a new user with a password and Boxee recognized that Username and Password.
