It appears that three visualizations have been ported over from XBMC. I have attempted to copy over the rest and though they have the same extension, they appear to be not compatible. A bigger selection of visualizations would be nice as well as the ability to cycle through them.

it should support all the visualizations from xbmc (linux port).
boxee ships with 2 default ones (projectM and opengl-spectrum). and you can toggle between them from the settings screen (music section).
welcome to boxee :)

I assumed that they would work, but perhaps I did something incorrectly. I downloaded a copy of the XBMC (XBMC-SVN_2008-07-28_rev14439-T3CH.rar) and upon checking the archive I notices that the folder structure was fairly similar. I just copied the files from the 'visualisations' folder in the archive to the 'visualisations' folder in /usr/boxee. Even though the files have the same extension, you can clearly see that they have different MIME types. I uploaded a screenshot below the my folder. The Boxee visualizations have a mime type of "application/x-sharedlib" and the XBMC have a mime type of "application/x-ms-dos-executable".

this is because the xbmc tree contains .vis files that are only available for win32 and xbox.
a .vis file is actually a shared library (linux: .so) renamed.
boxee tries to load the .vis before it will present it as an option and since it cant load the win32 binaries it will only show you the linux available ones.
