Hi all,

I recently ripped a few movies using RipIt (picked up that program in the last MacHeist bundle) and am noticing that Boxee doesn't like them too much. If I look in the "unidentified files" list, I get random .vob files for the movies that it didn't identify.

The movies it does identify, I get multiple "sources" which are really just a bunch of separate .vob files.

Is there any way I can get these rips to play like they were normal DVD's?

I can't attest to how that software rips, but you can zip or iso the files and boxee will play them.

there is another post or two here were others were addressing the multiple vob file issue if you do not want to zip or iso the files. Try the search for a few leads with keywords: multiple vob files

I have played around with .dvdmedia file (which is really a folder containing VIDEO_TS folder). If you go to files and then to that directory and play the VIDEO_TS.IFO then the DVD plays just like normal. Does anyone know how to "convince" Boxee to play that file rather than one of the .VOB files?

I just tested a DVD ripped to my hard drive in its usual Video_TS folder.

I was able to play the first file in the hiearchy: Video_TS.IFO and got the main DVD menu to come up and play the main movie or whatever item was listed.

Is it not working at all for you or what's it doing?

Personally, that's why I do the ISO thing. No messing around with the file structure to play it. And it indexes very easily.

Yes. I found the same thing. Boxee or XBMC for that matter don't like the way Ripit places the VIDEO_TS folder inside a special .dvdmedia folder. It is fine if all you want to do is play it from OS X DVD Player. But, what I do is just right click on the Ripit destination folder in question and do a "Show Package Contents". A new window should pop up showing you the VIDEO_TS folder inside. Just move it out from underneath the special .dvdmedia folder and put into a normal folder (e.g. Movies/movie name (year)/VIDEO_TS (this is the moved video_ts)) That should work as I believe Boxee can handle VIDEO_TS folders. I'm not sure as everything I have is either .mkv, .avi/.wmv/.mov, or ISOs.

You can prevent Ripit from using .dvdmedia container, as i did.
Just open preferences and uncheck the option "use .dvdmedia extension" on general tab.
That way every rip will be on normal dvd structure. ;)
