Found this thread: http://forums.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=9961 which I believe is referring to the Alpha version of boxee.

I am experiencing this issue in the beta version as well. I'm running Vista x64, which is what at leas one person in previous thread was doing. I'm a bit at a loss of what to try. My Win7 PC at work shows the DVD/CD icon and I assume it'll play a movie (don't have any to test with).

Is this something I missed in the config or is there an inherent problem with the software?

Do you have any virtual CD/DVD software running? If so, unload/disable it...

My DVD drives on my XP box have never been recognized by Boxee Beta. To this day I cannot use a DVD/CD rom on it.

My Windows 7 machine, yes. I installed a USB drive on my Revo and when I put a DVD or CD in the drive Boxee auto detects it and the Icon shows and functions.

I know of no cure for it myself if it does not show or work. ;).

Bringing this one back from the dead i guess. I am in the same boat -- no DVD icon in Boxee. I can browse to the drive in boxee but I see no icon to play the dvd from within boxee. Am I missing something? I'd love to be able to pop a dvd in and watch it from within boxee.

The Boxee beta/software won't play original protected/retail physical media/DVDs -- only decrypted discs burnt from decrypted files - or if having the decrypting software running in the background while accessing/playing the original discs from your optical drive

Thanks for the reply. I will try installing DVD decrypting software and see what happens (AnyDVDHD?).

AnyDVD HD comes highly recommended -- the DVD icon will not appear until Boxee senses (decrypted) physical media in your optical disk - and it should start playing the media automatically

You mention AnyDVD "HD" - Boxee will play (decrypted) BDs also with AnyDVD HD running on your computer

btw - if you rip any of this content to an ISO with AnyDVD HD -- Boxee will play the DVD ISOs without issue -- but you will 1st need to mount the BD ISOs with a virtual drive (Virtual CloneDrive) and access the VCD's assigned drive letter to play BD ISOs

Installed AnyDVDHD and icon now appears. However, when I put a blu-ray in it starts, shows the first few seconds (20th century fox logo), the hangs on a black screen. It appears it is in a loop because there is a quick flash of something every 4 seconds or so.

Also (but not as big of a deal), when I put a dvd in, MS media play starts and plays the dvd. Is there a way to associate ALL media to be opened by boxee without having to change each file type one by one?

Not sure what your BD problem - I don't have an issue playing BD ISOs or decrypted physical media/BDs -- and I just now re-tested an original protected BD with ADVD-HD running -- I had to drill down into the Folder Structure to find the main movie/m2ts but it worked fine

I don't believe you can associate your BD optical drive with Boxee (at least I can't on my W7 PC) -- but you can turn off 'Auto Play' in the control panel

Although on a side note -- my DVD optical drive is set (in Auto Play) to "Take no action" - but if starting to play a DVD in it with the Boxee beta app running, the movie will auto play/start in Boxee without having to click on anything to start the movie

btw - I'm using the latest Boxee beta v0.9.23.15885
