issues (presumably) with scanning

I just got boxee about a half-hour ago and i've run into a pretty major issue already unfortunately.

When i first started it up, it seemed OK, but my remote didn't work. I played with the remote settings a few times, restarted it, &c. My third or fourth time trying to restart, boxee hung when i clicked Exit on the 'are you sure you want to quit' box. I got my mouse back, but nothing else. Couldn't tab out, couldn't bring up the Force Quit box, i had to restart by holding down the power button.

So i started back up, went back into boxee, my remote was working all of a sudden so i decided to check the 'sources' settings i had seen earlier. I went to the 'Local Movies' source (intending to edit the path, since it's not the default) and again boxee hung. Same as before, except this time i didn't even get the mouse. Everything was just locked up. Had to restart with the button again.

Started up one more time. Went back in to play with the remote settings (since boxee wasn't coming up when i pressed Menu). I checked the radio button... and again it locked up. Hard-restarted again.

This whole time i'd been messing around with it, i noticed it was incredibly slow in general. Menus would take several seconds to load up, the buttons would take a second or two to respond to clicks, the text input was so slow that it skipped two or three whole letters as i was typing.

The next time i started it back up in window mode so that i could watch the log file as this all was happening. As it turns out, boxee appears to be downloading meta-data from IMDB and AMG. This is intended i imagine, but here are the issues:

1. No-where was i informed boxee was going to do this. I guess since it's an alpha i can't expect much in the way of documentation, but i really think it would be a good idea to put like a 'boxee is about to download meta-data for every single file on your computer, is this OK?' dialogue before just automatically launching into it.

2. It's far too aggressive. In full-screen mode the menus are severely lagged, and if i dare try it in windowed mode, the entire computer grinds to a complete halt as boxee makes 3 or 4 Web connections a second trying to download album art. Even the clock starts skipping!

(At least, i assume this is why boxee is so unresponsive. I guess i won't really know for sure until i have the time to let boxee sit and download all this stuff.)

I'll definitely play with it some more, the 'Private' source option in particular sounds like it will at least solve the immediate problem... but i think it's still something that should be pointed out. There must be a more gentle way of doing it. :/


System information:
- Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.4
- 2.4 GHz aluminium iMac, 1 Go RAM
- 6 Mbit DSL (so i doubt my connection is saturated)
- whatever the latest boxee is

No servers or downloads going in the background, no other programs really running at all (except Console when i was looking at the logs).

thanks for the detailed report!
we do know about some freezes. our next version (coming soon) tackle those. i really hope it will fix the freezes you are experiencing too.

in general meta-data retrieval happens in the background and is throttled (to some extent). many players do that (without asking the user) and since its mostly IO bound there shouldn't be much of an impact on performance.

so i think the hangs are not due to meta-data retrieval.

i really hope the next version will perform better on your setup. will be happy to hear if it does.

FYI, i went in and set all my sources to 'Private', and since then have not experienced the same slowness i was before (whether running in full-screen or windowed mode). I really do feel that this had something to do with the scanning process, if not directly related to download then maybe at least related to the process of applying the meta-data.

I did a test just now; i went into my sources and unchecked 'Private' for both my music and movies. The log immediately showed boxee beginning to make connections to AMG and IMDB, and again my computer slowed to a halt. Here's an excerpt of the log:

... Well. I went into boxee to test something else for a different thread. Everything was fine for the first few minutes as i navigated the menus, but then i noticed it getting slow again, with the actions and sounds lagging a second or two after my key presses. After another minute or so it completely locked up yet again. Could not tab out, could not force-quit. Had to hold in the button.

When i started back up i opened the log file. At the beginning is the normal start-up stuff, where it loads the skin files and the XML files and all that stuff. Shortly thereafter, i start seeing entries like this:

... That's the point at which the log stops. The clock on my computer had stopped at 18:44:59. I gave it another 5 or 10 minutes, still nothing happened, so i shut it down.

So here are the two issues:

Number one, it appears again that the scanning process caused a lock-up.

Number two, boxee is making connections to AMG despite the fact that scanning is disabled. Why is it doing this? I went back and double-checked each of my sources after i restarted, and they are definitely set to Private. The last time i had boxee running, i had turned scanning back on (for the test in my last post), and then after confirming the log entries i'd turned it off again. I haven't used it since. Maybe boxee somehow improperly saved my settings? Like it didn't get the 'signal' to stop scanning? I don't know. It's definitely an issue though. The application is totally unusable unless i set all my sources to Private.

I'll leave my reports at that for now i guess, i suppose you guys get the idea. Let me know if you need any more information from me though. :)

One last thing — boxee's logging is very verbose, which is fine... except xbmc.log and xbmc.old.log each allow a very limited number of entries in comparison. My xbmc.old.log for example contains hundreds and hundreds of entries... but it only spans 3 minutes. If i want to go back and see what happened just 5 minutes ago, i can't, because it's already been removed from the log!
