View Full Version : Grab photos from iPhoto off my Desktop mac to my Laptop?

I am on a Desktop Mac and use a Laptop Mac.
Is there a way/method for me to have Boxee on my Laptop tap into, wirelessly, my iPhoto photos on my Desktop which is on a 2nd drive in my desktop? I do not keep my entire 7000 photo catalog on my laptop... I keep it on my Desktop on a second drive. So, if I want "Photos" I want to be able to wirelessly have Boxee tap into my Desktop iPhoto catalog and show my photos..
We know that we can configure a laptop to wirelessly access my desktop iPhoto catalog and share my photos, so is it possible to see it or access it via Boxee?
is this possible?
I have sharing turned on on the Mac and in iPhoto specific and not sure how to do this?

To clarify: You have a collection of photos on your desktop that you'd like to access from your laptop via boxee? Be sure you have your desktop set to share the file
If you've been able to connect your laptop to your desktop, then you just need to direct boxee to the directory on your desktop....
Browse to Settings > Media > Add Source >/ > Volumes >
Your desktop drive that you have shared should appear here
Select the drive, add the source as a photo media type.... Boxee should recognize the photos.

to clairify...
the photos are on a different computer, my Desktop mac, and I want to get to them via my Laptop.. essentially use the desktop computer as a file server and access it wirelessly via the laptop using Boxee
not sure why this is not clear, as I thought I was pretty clear, but despite being on the same network as the desktop computer, and the desktop is set to sharing on, and iPhoto is set to allow sharing, the laptop does NOT see the desktop computer.
when I do this Settings > Media > Add Source > I just get a box asking for SHARE NAME, SHARE LOCATION, MEDIA TYPE, TYPE OF SCANNING... not even sure what to do here to help it find my desktop computer as it does not just "appear" like you elude to.

We're clear in what you want. The problem is that you're confused about how NETWORK sharing works versus iTunes and iPhoto sharing. They are not the same. And Boxee will not work directly with either iTunes nor with iPhoto. For purposes of this discussion, pretend that iTunes and iPhoto don't exist. Don't ever mention them again ;)
What you need to do is get Boxee on the laptop to see the FOLDERS on your desktop via your network. For some reason, this doesn't seem to be happening for you.
In Boxee from the Home Screen, click on Files and then scroll to Network. What do you see?
I suspect that you need to enable FOLDER / NETWORK sharing on your desktop. (I'm not talking about enabling sharing on iTunes or iPhoto - we're not talking about those, remember? ;) )

okay, we are 50% clear :)
no, I understand 100% that network sharing and the apps sharing are totally 100% different. I totally got that. I only ever provide that just to make it clear certain steps were taken. I also understand, 100%, that Boxee with not "work" with iTunes or iPhoto. Got it.
now, what I am not clear about is how to get Boxee on the Laptop to see the desktop computer. we agree that that is where I am lot.
"Home Screen, click on Files and then scroll to Network. What do you see?" I see some cryptic stuff... PG (Samba), PG (Samba), and UPnP
I have "File Sharing" turned on, as I said. In the Sharing control panel are also Internet, Web, DVD, Screen and a slew of others that are unrelated to this need, so they are not activated. But "File Sharing" is turned on and active.

"Samba" is a network share protocol so that's somewhat good news that you're seeing those.
Is "PG" the name of a computer on your network? What happens when you select "PG (Samba)"?
What is the name of your desktop computer that has the content?

PG are my initials, and frankly, I have no idea why that those are there and what any of those 3 are.
Nothing happens or is seen or is found when I click any of those 3. They are empty and go nowhere.
my Sharing control panel shows my computers name - I assume that is it - is "Goddard (2)"

Argh.
Unfortunately, we need a good Mac person to help you further -- I'm not at all familiar with the OS X interface and how to make sure Macs can see each other on the local network...

agreed.. someone has to have done this before, I can't be the first.
Personally, I "think" it will come down to a setting in Settings > Media > Network Sources or Manually Add Source - but I am just not sure what to put into them to find the desktop

In a "nice" network ;) all your systems (that have shared folders available) should show up through Boxee. I have four systems with content and my laptop (a fifth one) can see everybody else (well, when Boxee's Samba is working correctly, that is) and all their shared folders. Doing a manual add is sort of a last ditch effort ;)

BoxeeTard-- Lets start from the basics.....
Step 1: Confirm you can connect to your desktop
First, go to your laptop's finder and press "Shift+Apple+K"
This will show your network connections
Confirm that you're able to access your Desktop (Mac).
If you can, great, move to step 2.
If you cant, go to your laptops finder and press "Apple+K"
enter the ip address of your desktop
(Don't know your IP? click here (http://blog.bogojoker.com/2008/12/mac-os-x-what-is-my-ip-address/))
Step 2: Direct Boxee to your desktop
Open Boxee
Go to settings
Go to media
Select "add source"
IGNORE "Manually enter IP address"
Select "/"
Scroll down and select "Volumes"
Your desktop should appear.
select your desktop
BoxeeTard
March 26th, 2010, 11:05 AM
STEP 1 is confirmed - I can access my DT computer
STEP 2 when I go to Settings > Media > I get 3 options Local Sources, Network Sources, Manually Add Source. When you say "select add source" do you mean select the 3rd option of Manually Add Source? Because if you do, there is no method to IGNORE "Manually enter IP address" as there is no place your asked to enter an IP. Point is, I do not see what your saying I would see.

You're using Boxee beta, correct? Not alpha
You should see an icon that reads "Add source."

Yeah dude... you're running a version of boxee that's over a year old...

go to boxee.tv and download the latest version.

Just says Boxee. Just downloaded yesterday, so whatever is available on the site for the Mac (intel) is what I have as I see no Version number w/ Control + i
Either way, from Settings > Media > there is NO "Add Source" there is "Local Sources, Network Sources, Manually Add Source"... are you sure I am not suppose to be in one of these 3 as INSIDE "Network Sources, Manually Add Source" there are buttons "Add New Source" and "Add" respectively

I just got it yesterday off the Boxee website!?!? Are you still sure mine is old then???
I have the "Manually Add Source" button and in that is "Add" - but like I said, no IP address, no folders, no "/" just a SHARE NAME and SHARE LOCATION...
no matter what selection I make.. nothing like this is possible
IGNORE "Manually enter IP address"
Select "/"
Scroll down and select "Volumes"
Your desktop should appear.

You want to select the second one: Network Source and then off to the right should be a "Add source" button. After clicking on that, do you see your Desktop computer name listed?

okay, now that I understand where to go... No, I do not see my computer listed. I only see those 3 I listed before AND "Manually Enter IP / Name ...."

I just don't know what the hold up is......
Remember, you must first MOUNT your SMB network drives (ie, your desktop drive) before you attempt this is Boxee. The drives wont appear...
STEP 1: Select "Local Sources" under Settings >Media Shares
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_Jdmf_e_Dmck/S7DjZ_jju2I/AAAAAAAABmg/z6kRZaf4FAo/s800/Screen%20shot%202010-03-29%20at%201.26.20%20PM.png

STEP 4: Select "Volumes"

I would post more photos, but the forums won't allow it. Once you open volumes you should see your Desktop drives....
If you don't, it's because you haven't properly mounted your drives....
::edit:: and to make things that much easier, picasa has decided not to work
BoxeeTard

so, I can get to "/" and to "Volumes"
BUT still, no way to get to or see my Desktop computer. I only see my local Laptop volume listed despite being connected to my desktop via both wireless and a hard cable (network). So, not sure why I cannot see the desktop computer? From this laptop I can, via the Finder, navigate to my Desktop computer and see everything.. Boxee cannot get it done though
EDIT: okay, not sure if this is related, but when I logged into the Desktop computer via the Finder, I had to log out of Boxee obviosuly. Well, upon logging back into Boxee I can NOW see my Desktop computer! I wonder if that step of logging into the Dekstop computer via the Finder and THEN logging into Boxee is required? Seems it should not as a few extra steps.
thoughts?

Yes. You mounted your desktop's drive.

sorry, missed that being an actual first step. That is, I figured that since my laptop could see the desktop, than it was "mounted". It never dawned on me for Boxee to even work like this, you have to go to Network > and mount your desktop as a first step and THEN start Boxee second. Assumed since it was on the network, it would mount it when Boxee saw it. my bad for not catching that part.

No worries -- it's one of my biggest peeves that OSs don't automatically mount (a problem for both OSX and XP/others)

I feel like a tard for not catching your mount reference. again, I just assumed Boxee would auto mount the other volumes since it was on the same network.
Just curious, now that I have them mounted and added as new "source" - I now know I have to auto mount myself before firing up Boxee - but if not, Boxee will remember the sources, show them in the list, but just not get to them, correct?

...Not in my experience for either OSX or XP....
If other users know otherwise, I'd be delighted to hear about it...
I'm sure I/we could create a code for OSX to automatically mount the drives, but I have yet to find the time

so wait.. your saying if you say log off the laptop, shut it down, restart it, open Boxee.. it will not find those new Sources you added?
not only do you have to manually mount the remote volumes but you also have to go through all of this again and re add the sources???
wow, that seems like a major flaw. I don't really see myself as wanting to take the time to continually re add sources every single time after a restart and new running of Boxee. the lack of auto mount of remote volumes is weak, but if you really have to re add sources over and over.. that is hella weak

No, boxee will automatically connect to the drives once they have been mounted
Perhaps in future builds, Boxee could be developed to automatically mount SMB drives through the computer's OS after a restart.......
But, that's a lot of work for what is actually an issue that should be taken up by Microsoft/Apple/Linux...
