I get an error reported elsewhere when I try install boxee by adjusting my synaptic sources, the error claiming no 64bit version available:

Failed to fetch http://apt.boxee.tv/dists/hardy/main/binary-amd64/Packages.gz 404 Not Found
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

But I sure I am running an intel core 2 duo processor, not amd, and I am sure I am not using 64bit, since my lsb-release says:

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=8.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=hardy
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 8.04.1"

any ideas what is wrong?

Hey prupert, I wrote a how-to as I solved running Boxee 32bit in a 64bit Ubuntu Hardy installation. Maybe this will help you. My post is here...

Thanks for the reply ;)

Unfortunately, I have moved over to the dark side (Windows) since Ubuntu does not work with my XiFi soundcard at the moment, whilst Windows works really well with it and even does Dolby Digital Live Encoding....

My friend, don't leave our side yet!

One of those should do the trick ;)

That's very kind to hunt down all that info. I haven't left your side completely, I run an Ubuntu box for web and network shares (where Boxee gets all its media) and have just purchased a mini-ITX box runnining Ubuntu Server (headless) so I can do software dev work on it and get use to only using the CLI.

I did try to get the XiFi driver working, but Creative's driver only support very basic sound options (not even 5 speakers yet) and doesn't support Dolby Digital Live. Also Pulse Audio support of the XiFi is severely lacking at the moment (I undertand that ALSA is to be replaced with PulseAudio).

Thus, my only option is Windows at the moment, but I have not and will never leave Ubuntu - never fear - OS is still very much here ;)
