View Full Version : There must be a solution: Boxee + Airfoil sync issues

I've read through all the previous threads where users want to stream the audio from Boxee wirelessly to their speakers via Airfoil. This is easy enough -- just select Boxee from Airfoil and it works instantly.
Unfortunately it's unusable as the audio/video are not synced. I haven't found a way to delay the audio in Boxee to resolve this issue. Is this really not possible? Video players such as VLC allow the audio stream to be delayed by millisecond increments.
Obviously this is something many people want to do, so I find it hard to believe there isn't some way around this barrier.
Thanks for your help!

I've found a workaround. Unfortunately, it's not great but it will allow you to watch a given video with the audio in sync.
According to a post I found on the Airfoil forums, AirTunes inserts a two second delay between the time it receives an audio signal and the time it is played. Ergo, this is not a bug that can be fixed by the Airfoil guys.
Boxee does have support for audio offsets but it can only be set for a specific video after the video has started playing. If you start the video again, the offset must be set again. Also, there is no way that I can find to sync the audio for the navigation sounds while not watching a video.
To sync the audio for a given video do the following:
Select the video you want to watch and start it.
Pause the video.
Using the Boxee remote for iPhone/iPod Touch (gesture mode), touch the boxee logo to bring up the pause/play bar for the video. (you can do this with the keyboard by pressing ENTER)
Navigate to the top of the screen to the settings icon (the little gear) and touch the Boxee logo in the remote to bring up the settings dialog for the currently playing video.
When the settings dialog appears select "Audio" and touch the Boxee logo or press ENTER
Select Audio Offset and move the slider to the RIGHT until the Audio Offset is Ahead By 2.000 seconds.
Press the back button in the boxee remote twice, and resume playing the video.
Given that Boxee does support audio offsets, I think the way this can be fixed would be for boxee to support a global audio offset that will apply to system sounds as well as audio output for videos. Perhaps we could lobby the boxee guys for this feature.
Hope that helps.

If you ask someone in the know with the Boxee there way exist a variable to do this with all videos, as a global variable or something. You could also submit a feature request, as a software switch (Check to enter AirTunes compatibility mode) probably wouldn't be too time consuming to implement. You are a small minority, however.

Edit UserData/guisettings.xml
Set:
<audiodelay>2.000000</audiodelay>
and
<subtitledelay>2.000000</subtitledelay>
in the <defaultvideosettings> area
This works for all local media, though it does not work for Internet streaming.
