View Full Version : Apple remote won't work even with Candelair

Something weird is going on with Boxee beta, Candelair and my remote.

I first installed Boxee under my main login on my Macbook (white 1st gen, 10.6.2) and then, after noticing the remote didn't work, I installed Candelair and everything was great.

Only problem was my main login has a lot of apps running in the background and it's a pain to quit them all so that Boxee has enough power for flash video. So I started a new user called "boxee" with no startup items, just for boxee. I made sure Candelair was installed and legacy mode was enabled.

No remote input works in Boxee. If I select, "always running," I can start Boxee with the menu button but I can't control it when it's open. Outside of Boxee everything seems to work fine. Front Row, volume, iTunes... it's just Boxee that is broken.

So I uninstalled Boxee from the user "boxee" and uninstalled Candelair from all users. Then I downloaded the newest Boxee version again as well as Candelair: still doesn't work.

I don't understand what is going on. It worked fine under my main login. I've even tried pairing and unpairing the remote.

Try this, in order:

Fully delete boxee
1) Delete application in applications folder
2) Delete userdata folder in
/Users/user/Library/Application Support/BOXEE

Fully delete candelair
1)Go to System Preferences > Candelair and click "Uninstall" to uninstall the driver. When the driver is uninstalled, go to the overview in System Preferences, perform a right click on the "Candelair" icon and select "Remove".

Repair disk permissions with disk utility

Reboot

Install boxee and run

Install candelair and do the legacy thing.

Try again.

Nope. Still doesn't work. The Repair Permissions thing I had not done before with my Boxee/Candelair uninstalls but still, exactly the same as before. Remote can do anything but work in Boxee. Like I said before, it will even start Boxee with the menu button if "always running" is on.

Are you using the new (silver) apple remote or the old (white) one?

I have the same issue but I am using the new remote. Works fine with everything except for boxee. I lost my old remote (hence the new one) so I can't test the theory that it is the new remote, but if yours is a new one too then maybe we have an issue there.

I've given up on getting any remote to work on Mac Boxee. I gave in the other day and bought a USB UIRT dongle and am going to run 7 on my Mini. It's upsetting that it can't be fixed.

The plus side is that not only will I be able to use my Apple remote, but my Harmony as well. =/

yep, all the same issue with old white remote. newly bough mac, no software installed. Just installed latest boxee beta, then latest candelair - remote still calls volume control and frontrow. boxee doesn't pick it up.

I really hope those remote issues will be addressed (http://blog.boxee.tv/2009/10/23/snow-leopard-got-your-remote/) in the next boxee release!

I know it's supposedly a Snow Leopard issue, but how come everything else still works!? Front Row (obviously), Plex, Hulu, VLC, you name it. I for one refuse to install some kind of 3rd party IR driver, like Candelair, just to get boxee to work. And using the boxee remote app for my iPhone is not a viable alternative, you always have to wake the iphone, look down at the screen, it drains the battery, et cetera.

Right now, instead of using boxee every day I haven't used it in two weeks... Please fix this!

Consider yourself lucky.... The remote works for nothing on 10.6.2 here. I have both the new and old remotes and neither work with my new core i7 27in imac. This is definitely NOT a boxee issue. All you have to do is look at the mac forums and see all the others that are not using boxee that have this issue as well.

So leave the boxee developers alone because until apple fixes the root cause... anything the boxee dev's do will just have to be redone after apple creates a fix.

If you're running boxee and it's set to control the remote (it's on by default) then the remote won't work for anything as there does seem to be some issue with Boxee and the apple remote on snow leopard. Turn that setting off and you'll find that your remote will work normally (i.e. it'll start front row, change volume etc). That's been my experience.
