Hi,
Just installed boxee and everything works great except most of the streaming content. I saw that someone said youtube is broke for every platform, but nothing about the others.
CNN and TED works. The movie trailers work.
When I try to load from hulu etc. the spinner goes for a couple of seconds and then just quits. No error messages.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Yeah, same here but mine is a home built openSUSE version. What are you running? Have you tried running Boxee from the commandline to see if you get any interesting errors printed out?

Still no joy here on my Dell Mini (Ubuntu 8.04 albeit an Atom processor) or my opensuse install, getting it to run YouTube, Comedy Central or Hulu. Is there any other diagnostics I could look at? The /tmp/jdarnold-boxee.log file does't show anything interesting.

I'm on 3964 as well, although synaptic says 3970. Either way, I'm sure I have the newest release.
So, no hulu, cbs, comedy or youtube for me.

I'm also having problems seeing youtube and hulu videos (I can go straight to Hulu.com or Youtube.com and I can see the videos just fine). I'm located in Puerto Rico, but most online studios allow for viewing in Puerto Rico (only CBS and Netflix don't stream to PR, NBC, ABC, Fox and Hulu stream just fine). Videos from Comedy Central don't seem to work within Boxee either (although they work fine on Firefox).
Any word on what's going on? I'm trying out Boxee on my Ubuntu laptop before I go get an AppleTV (or MacMini) to connect to my home theater.

Cnet video works fine, Revision3 video works fine, CNN video works fine. However, once I go to CBS, Comedy Central or Hulu (any), I get as far as selecting for show, pressing play, and Boxee brings me back to the episode list once again without an error message.

I had this problem, which i determined was that all flash based content did not work. boxee brings with it's own flash player, which I am supposing is based on adobe flash player 10? Dunno, but neither flash player 10 nor boxee streaming flash content would work on a fresh install of ubuntu 8.04 i created for the purpose of using boxee.
Anyways, flash player 10 is hard linked to some shared libraries in /usr/lib. Already had them, but with slightly different names. I made some symlinks and all is better.
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libnss3.so.1d /usr/lib/libnss3.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libsmime3.so.1d /usr/lib/libsmime3.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libplds4.so.0d /usr/lib/libplds4.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libplc4.so.0d /usr/lib/libplc4.so
sudo ln -s /usr/lib/libnspr4.so.0d /usr/lib/libnspr4.so
NOTE: just because flash works in your browser but not in boxee doesn't mean this fix won't work. boxee is using it's own binary (in /opt/boxee/system/players/flash) and if you have an older version of flash plugin in your browser it might be working while the newer version shipped with boxee doesn't. Thankfully I had the newest v10 for my browser because of fresh install and could use the debug information from running firefox at the command line to make the fix, boxee doesn't tell me anything.

my fresh 8.04 install had these files (or symlinks) already. i had flash 9 installed and wasn't able to get the videos to play.
when i went to adobe's site and downloaded the .deb of flash 10, boxee played videos perfectly.

What finally worked for me was:
1) Removing Flash 9
2) Downloading and applying all available updates for 8.04
3) Downloading Flash 10 .deb from Adobe's website
4) Installing Flash 10 .deb
I tried installing Flash 10 without first updating Ubuntu and it would not recognize any Flash plugins installed. After I updated and install Flash 10, everything worked like a charm, except for CBS, which said something about the videos being expired.
My guess is that has to do something with licensing for PR since I get the same message from CBS on their website.

I'm having the same problem on a Dell Mini 9 running Ubuntu 8.4 Hardy. I tried update>uninstall Flash 9>install Flash 10 > Nothing. I tried creating symlinks for the hardlinked libs, no luck.
Any other suggestions? :)

Did you update Ubuntu 8.04 before installing Flash 10? Flash 10 didn't work for me until after I downloaded and applied all available updates for 8.04.

Thanks for this - I installed schroot to run boxee on my 64bit box and I had to follow these instructions, but it seems to have fixed the hulu/youtube/comedycentral issues.
*edit*
Hmm, looks like I spoke too soon. Comedy Central, CNN and MySpace work, but I can't get Hulu or Youtube to work, any ideas? I tested Firefox w/ Flash 10 in chroot and it worked ok.

does anyone know if this issue has been addressed? I have a fairly clean install of 8.04 and no luck streaming any content. I have XBMC installed as well and don't want to upgrade to much as that application is working well at the moment.

i just installed boxee the other day from a clean install of ubuntu. The only thing i added to ubuntu was XBMC and openSSH. I did not change any of the flash or do any flash installs. I am located in the US and I do see all the locations I can stream content from such as comedy central, hulu, mtv, etc. No matter which one i select, the content never starts. For example, I am able to select mtv and then select a video, but once the video tries to start, all I see is a spinning wheel. The same results happens for bot comedy central and hulu.

Sounds like you will need to install extra flash software. When you don't see any Hulu video, flash is usually the problem. Make sure to install libflashsupport and you will probably also need flash10 if it isn't already installed.
There have been several threads discussing video from Hulu/CBS not showing up so feel free to search the linux threads for Hulu and you'll come across them.
In particular, this thread may be of some help. Best of luck:

I very new to this linux stuff. I have tried to install libflashsupport through the package manager, still a no go. I can go to the hulu site through firefox and everything starts to play. I have no idea where the boxee.log file is located in order to post some information as to why it is still not working...
the other problem i had was no matter how much i tried to install flash v10, it would not show up as a working plugin in firefox? I am running ubuntu 8.04.

Log file for me is at: /tmp/gregms-boxee.log
It should be named something similar for you, just look in the /tmp folder.

Regarding the latest version for linux, 4826, which has been the latest version for some time....
Are any of you able to PAUSE in Hulu yet? I tried out Boxee a while back, fell in love with it, and then found it near useless when I couldn't pause to take a leak. I never had any issues getting the streams to start & play, it was just that pause did not work (and this is known issue, I've seen it mentioned in the forums before, as far back as December maybe?). This is on Ubuntu 8.10 with 4826.
I think sometimes the plugins themselves get updated in the background? I certainly haven't seen any announcements about that on the website and I don't come to the forums often enough to see mentions of a plugin update since the application doesn't really work enough for me to be near useful.

As far as I've seen, it is still broken. Video pauses but audio still goes. I've just learned to press the STOP button, but the problem is I'm stuck with another 20 second advertisement before I can begin again. At the very least, it remembers where you left off at so there isn't a need to fast-foward.
I've using Boxee-Linux. If anyone else has this working, let me know cause I may miss it if there isn't an update posted as I've just learned I can't use it so I never test it anymore other than when my wife tries to pause a video :D
