I spent some time digging around on the xbmc linux forum and I dug up the exact issue that I am having in Boxee with the ATI 1250 (AMD 690G chipset) - they call it "ghost flurry image".
It looks exactly like this:
http://www.wolfspain.net/linux/images/xbmc_ghost.jpg
And - they have a fix for it! See the third post on this page by XBMC developer "elupus" on 06/10/08.
http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=30185&page=7
He's working on this file:
file: xbmc\cores\VideoRenderers\VideoShaders\YUVRGBShade r.cpp
Any chance Team Boxee can have a look at the above thread and advise?? Is this something that I can try to implement in Boxee or does it need to be implemented by developers in the build package somehow?
Thanks in advance!

hi.
we are keeping our sources in sync with the great work done by team-xbmc.
the work done by elupus will be integrated to our next version (coming real soon) and i hope it will solve the ghosting problem you see.
welcome to boxee.

2927 was released recently and the ghosting issue is still there. I've used the open-source drivers which caused the green tint and the ati fglrx drivers which cause the ghosting issue.

please try this:
create the following file:
~/.boxee/UserData/advancedsettings.xml
and paste this in it:
<advancedsettings>
<glrectanglehack>yes</glrectanglehack>
</advancedsettings>
restart the client and please let me know if it works :)

Ok, those settings worked for me, the ghosting/streaking is now gone.
The only problem left is boxee flipping into windowed mode from full screen as soon as I start playing a video.
Any ideas on this one?

Skywise - which video card and catalyst driver are you using?
Anyone have positive reports of a specific driver with the X1250 onboard chip using the advancedsettings.xml fix? I've messed with the open source driver, 8.6 via EnvyNG and 8.8 - but none using the advancedsettings.xml fix yet.
I'm planning to do a fresh Ubuntu install and want to get a good driver off the bat to avoid the mess that I inevitably end up with when I try to uninstall and reinstall drivers in Ubuntu.

the card is an x600 ati wonder
the driver is the ubuntu 8.04 restricted
( 35.873200] [fglrx] module loaded - fglrx 8.47.3 [Feb 25 2008] on minor 0)

ok, i swapped around the video cards from my 64 bit machine and the 32 bit machine and now i don't need the workaround to get good video
the video card that works is:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series]
(it has component out so it'll be in my 32 bit box until boxee works on 64 bit)

yes - go into settings->appearance->screen
toggle to "winowed" and click "OK" when you get the confirm dialog.
then toggle bak to "full" and again - confirm.
then - restart boxee.
this should do the trick. please let me know if it works.
thanks.
