View Full Version : Embedded subs won't show up in Boxee Beta?

So I tried using beta and for some reason the subs for my .mkv files wont show up. They are embedded into the video and they came up in the alpha version and they also come up in other media players, but why wont they come up in the beta version? Is the .mkv similar to the .avi's wherin they are a "container"? (.avi's usually contain an xvid or divx video steam, and an mp3 audio stream, and the AVI shell around them tells the computer how to render them in synch.) Because if .mkv's are similar to this then it could be that the 'embedded' subs are just another file thrown in the that container, it could be that boxee's just not parsing them. But idk, any ideas? Anyone else have this problem?

System Info:
OS: Win7 Ultimate
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 295

Check your audio settings and see if they are on.

I checked that prior to posting this (my apologies for not stating that before hand.) and subtitles are checked with english as the language, however nothing came up, i checked in the video settings menu and everything is the same as boxee alpha, however still no subtitles. Thanks for the idea tho, wish i could figure this out.

Could it be a fonts issue? Try looking into your log and see if there is an error related to fonts somewhere.

Cheers,
S.

I had a problem like this; embedded subs showed up in VLC but not Boxee -- I had to use the Audio settings available when the movie is playing and then they worked like a charm. Not sure if that's what you tried (since there are also audio/video settings in the 'settings' area).

Most of my movies are AVC/AAC Mp4 and have embedded subtitles. The older version of Boxee had no problems but the new version will not play it on my system. Here's my config.

System Info:
OS: Win7 Ultimate
Graphics: ATI Radeon 4870 512mb ram on card.

I even reinstalled the OS from scratch with nothing but Boxee...
VLC media Player has no problems displaying subtitles!

I built another media center and it can display subtitles just fine! go figure...
the only difference is that that one is using older hardware.

Same problem here, some show up, but most don't. ATI HD2600 running Win7 x64.

I also have the same problem.

Most of, if not all of my Anime has embedded subs, and nothing will display.

I'm using boxee-0.9.20.10408.

I've uninstalled boxee and reinstalled it.. It still doens't show up.
I've double checked the settings to make sure subtitles were turned on etc. etc.

Some files will play which are avi... thoes ones work.. but it struggles with the MKV files (subtitle related, not video playing quality).

I wanted to make sure it was boxee.. So I downloaded xbmc and installed that... and...My MKV files can play, with the embedded Subs, it played all my files perfectly.

but I'd rather use boxee... Is there a fix for this issue?

I have also reproduced this error on my machine running Windows 7. None of my One Piece MKVs will play subs although they did in the last beta version. I'm currently running 0.9.20.10261.

For some reason, if you go to settings > video > player and uncheck "Enable hardware assisted decoding when possible" the subs show up and the file plays seamlessly. This fix worked for me.

You are right! That fixed that problem for me too. Too bad for hardware decoding though.

Voodoofox,

According to Judgechambers, there are still many DX issues being worked out. I gather that a lot of things are in flux right now. Hopefully things will be ironed out as they move further along. Once the problem with the subs were fixed, the files play beautifully. I don't care if that happens with or without hardware acceleration. Where I could see it being a problem is if boxee ever added bluray support. All of those issues would have to be solved.

Well, I think it is very important that subs work while hardware acceleration is on so slower CPU machines can play HD material. So basically if you purchase Boxee box one day you wont be able to play full HD material fluently and have subtitles at the same time.

Also one more thing, if boxee has HW acceleration off it means it does not uses settings in NVIDIA video color settings, which means I cant play videos in limited color space (16-235) on my TV. And beacuse of that I end up with too dark picture and loose detail in dark shadows. (maybe somebody knows how to correct this when not using HW acceleration).

:(I just want to add that I have the same problem with my AMD/ATI based pc. The soft subtitles in my MKV files don't show in Boxee (not even in the latest 9.21.11421 build). However VLC and XBMC show them with no problem, I though XBMC was also using DXVA. I haven't tried unselecting hardware acceleration; once I do I'll post my findings.

I was able to try the MKV files today again but this time I disable the hardware acceleration in Boxee and the subtitles appear like they should. Indeed this seems to be a problem within the ATI drivers and Boxee DXVA.
I hope the can fix it up since I have ordered a new 785G motherboard for my dedicated HTPC.

Hi Everyone.
I'm happy to report that I was able to get the subs working in my MKV's using the latest Beta release (0.9.21.11487) in my Radeon HD4200 with 10.3 drivers. This is with full hardware acceleration enable.
Thanks Boxee!
:D

I noticed that the latest update fixed this issue. My embedded subs are working just fine with hardware acceleration enabled.

Great job Boxee..

I have English speaking movies that have embedded Eng. subs, & also multi-subbed movies.
So how can I select/disable/enable subs in boxee?

Thanks!
