I'm not getting any sound on shoutcast, or any podcasts. However, sound works in OS (Ubuntu 8.04), and Comedy Central, hulu. Volume is all the way up. Anyone else have the same problems, or have any recommendations?

I had the exact same problem, to fix it I went into the audio settings when a video was playing that didn't have sound. Then I cycled through the outputs until the sound came on. I actually ended with the original setting but for some reason cycling worked. But it seems I have to do this everytime

The audio setting in boxee that appear when you move the mouse during a playing video. I have had some luck with this but it seems boxee keeps crashing for other reasons.

...Shoutcast I see visualizations, podcast videos I see people talking...I don't have any local/network music yet...

...I tried cycling through the outputs, but if I try to change it once, boxee crashes, then I go back to sound output, and the change was made, but still no sound. Try and change again, and it crashes again. Happened multiple times...

I'm having a similar problem, except that it seems like certain video formats play correctly and others do not. Specifically, streams like hulu appear to play well, but files in avi, mkv, etc do not.

My problem might be up/down conversion of the sound.

Does boxee just pass the sound off directly to alsa, or is it doing something fancier?

Any ideas?

boxee is built using sdl... my understanding is that sdl_audio abstracts alsa.

sdl is a cross-platform gaming framework, boxee talks to it, and sdl in turn, talks to:
lin = alsa
win = directsound (do they still make directsound?)
mac = coreaudio

now, to make it a bit more complected... this is not true in the case of the flash sites. (hulu, cc, cbs, etc.)
in those cases, boxee just wraps the given os' version of flash-standalone.
because flash is already cross-platform, it handles audio itself.

all this accounts for the fact that you can't control the volume level on flash sites.
(actually, that and the fact that boxee's audio is internalized in sdl, hence boxee's volume level is unrelated the the system volume level.
while flash's volume level is system based.)

@boxee-devs, please correct all the parts i got wrong. :D

After trying multiple content types I have come to the opinion (unverified) that the files/streams that don't work for me are almost all of the non-flash content. I am running ubuntu 8.10 ibex. Boxee was the first and only thing I have running on this machine.

I am having similar audio problems as others. Sound does not work for movie trailers and podcasts. I also have no audio for downloaded torrents or files from external source.

For me, I went into settings, system, Audio Hardware, and Audio Output, and changed it from digital to analog. This is not the most ideal, but it works for me.

On my system sound in Boxee works for some things, and not for others. Changing from digital to analog does not help. My issue is entirely dependent on what feed I am trying to watch. For sites like Hulu where it doesn't work there is no audio stream detected. See the attached image. I can switch back and forth between digital and analog, but either way there is no audio stream in Hulu. Now if I go to Hulu in Firefox outside of Boxee it works just fine. My audio hardware is: 00:06.1 Audio device: nVidia Corporation MCP55 High Definition Audio (rev a2)

Yeah, my hulu audio (via my optical out) is very sporadic. However, I also can't get it to play via Firefox either, so it is almost certainly some kind of Flash problem. I was able to fix it on my openSUSE box by uninstalling the flash player 9, making sure i only had the flash player 10 installed. I haven't yet tried to make sure it is okay on my Ubuntu boot. Check the Adobe.com site for the flash test web page and make sure you have sound there.

I'll do some testing over the thanksgiving holiday, and give a better listing of what works and what doesn't. I would love to do it right now, but unfortunately at the moment I've got this pesky thing called work. :)

Just started using Boxee and I'm having the same issues with audio.

Installed on my MacBook at home (Not the new version, OS X 10.5.5, 4gig Ram) Video worked just fine on all of the sources I tried(Hulu, trailers, etc), but I couldn't get any streaming audio to work (BBC, Last.fm, etc)

Got to work today and decided to install on my station to try streaming audio here. I didn't get any audio out of my desktop speakers, but I did hear it coming from the system speaker inside my tower. (Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.5, 4gig Ram, 2 x 2.8 Ghz Quads)

I tried cycling through all of the audio options I could find, but it continued to play out of my tower.

Hope that helps. Thanks.

I have found that I have no sound on certain things, as well.

I tested all of the video channels I have available (http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=2390), and the sound works just fine.

However, when I click on videos from sources like Comedy Central or Hulu, I have no sound.

I am running Boxee SVN:3964, built on Oct. 23, 2008. I am running it on Linux Mint Elyssa using the 2.6.24-21-generic kernel.

Well in my pursuit to get sound fully functional I tried several things I found posted in different threads here. Unfortunately I have now totally broken Boxee. It will not even launch without crashing my system. Everything else on my system works flawlessly, so this is a bit frustrating.

I am thinking my issue is related to the fact that my current install is Linux Mint 5 Elyssa, but I have installed the latest kernel from the Ubuntu Intrepid repositories, along with some other things. The final version of Linux Mint 6 (based on Intrepid) will be out in 2 or 3 more weeks at which point I will be doing a clean install. I am hoping by that time Boxee will have an official package for Intrepid.

So I wanted to thank you guys for your help, but it seems the best course of action for me right now is to wait a few weeks. I will of course post up again at that time.
