When I got my Beta invite, the email said:

The currently available versions for download are:
- Mac OSX 10.4+ (Intel Only) r10063
- Windows XP/Vista/7 r10063
- Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 32bit r10069
- Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic) 64bit r10066

So I went and installed it (Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 32bit r10069), and when i go to Settings -> General, it says:

0.9.20.10051M r10051M

Am I using the latest version? And when updates come out, where can I get them? Will I receive another email?

I'm comfortable following the Jira for updates of what is being fixed, but how do i get new versions?

That is weird...

The things is, a good 90% of boxee beta users arn't using the most updated version of beta, since the Boxee Team releases a new "inside" build every two weeks -- at least. Even the r10063 build is outdated now, and if you look around JIRA, you'll see that users can report problems on post-r10063 builds.

I imagine the difference between r10063 and r10051 is nominal.

Well, the closed beta test ends in less than two days, so I doubt any of us will be getting another beta notification via e-mail, but in the past, that is how we all found out about beta updates. As for the reported version number, they have a had a few beta versions where someone forgot to update the version number info. If you followed the link in that e-mail to download the 10069 version, then that is what you actually have. Check the version number date, that is usually accurate.

Your too fast:D

Back to my question, how will I be informed of newer private tester releases? I'm not too worried about new fancy features, I'm more using it for developing apps on Beta.

There are some significant performance issues I'm noticing and will end up filing bug reports for them. Other than that, I'm mostly just filing bugs about API issues with app development. The API is like swiss cheese in most places. It really needs some work to really be able to offer quality apps, which in turn makes Boxee more attractive.

You should get an email from the boxee team when they're ready to release a new version. I'm not sure if they prioritize users, but I got an email from Tom Sella on 12/29 for the r10063 release.

Honestly, with there being roughly only 2 days left until the beta goes public I doubt there will be another private beta version put out. The next one release will probably be the one on the 7th.

Yes, but in the general settings it still shows 10051. Is this just nominal?

Cheers,

IN any given update, there's only a few (i think around 10-40) minor tweeks the team does to the software to enhance performance. The difference between 10051 and 10063 would be nominal...

With that said, we should all be running the same Beta build soon....

The version that you see in the installer's file name is the accurate version number. The version that is in the general settings area is not accurate. It's just a result of them pumping out test versions and then picking one to push out to the world. They probably compile Boxee, then there are several other parts of Boxee that have to be separately compiled. Then the entire installer package gets a number.

Thanks for the explanation, NomadDNA and DPK.
