Hi everyone...

I'm a total n00b when it comes to linux.

I installed ubuntu version 8.10 and after struggling to get my underscan problems fixed (output = plasma tv, using HDMI) I now have another problem.

I use the restricted driver manager to get drivers for my ATI card.

Everything works fine, even compiz.

But when I launch boxee (not tried XBMC yet, but I expect the same results)

My screen goes crazy... I attached a screenshot

http://img360.imageshack.us/img360/1897/dsc00270md8.th.jpg (http://img360.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc00270md8.jpg)http://img360.imageshack.us/images/thpix.gif (http://g.imageshack.us/thpix.php)

Does anyone know what to do?

Same problem here on my main Ubuntu 8.04 box using also an ATI card with restricted drivers (ATI X850). However everything works fine on my HTPC also running Ubuntu 8.04 that I have hooked up to my TV. I think this one also has a ATI card.
Well, the messed up screen on my main machine doesn't only come up when I run Boxee. It also happens when I try to run a program through wine or crossover. Quite strange...

glxgears seems fine though.... argh... I created another topic in the XBMC forum... hope that someone has a solution... I really want to use boxee... Using VESA drivers boxee seems fine... but it is to slow to navigate... Using the proper drivers makes boxee fast but unreadable... :(

I also have the ATI HD 3200 video card and i too have the same issue but since I installed ubuntu 8.10 everything looks washed out and when I tried to play a 720p movie it continuously flickered.

I have this same issue with 8.10 on an ATI X1250. It goes away and looks normal if I take Boxee out of full screen though. Put it back in full screen it looks the same (fuzzy).

I have the same problem with ubuntu 8.10 and a 780G chipset with ATI Radeon HD3200.

I'm using the Catalyst 8.11 beta driver.

Same problem in both Boxee and XBMC, but only in full screen.

Any help appriciated

Have you tried the EnvyNB driver? I know that has helped some XBMC users.

Is Compiz running when you start boxee?

instead of using boxee's native fullscreen, you could use metacity's...

if you press shift+f11 it should make boxee fullscreen. it works just the same.
(actually, this is how i natively run boxee... for another reason.)

shift+f11 doesn't seem to do anything for me.

oh... maybe i personally set that, because i have the same key-combo for compiz...

none-the-less, you can set it in the 'windows management' section of 'keyboard shortcuts':
system > preferences > keyboard shortcuts > toggle fullscreen mode

It has the same effect going either way (toggle full screen key vs tab/| keys). I have tried this with both compiz and metacity (using fusion-icon) for the same result.

this is what it looks like, by the way:

Older drivers doesn't work with Intrepid because Intreprid uses xorg 7.4.

guys, if you start boxee from a terminal using the "sudo" command...

fullscreen works...

"sudo /opt/boxee/boxee windows or something...."

check it out...

Now I need to find out how to change my shortcut to start with sudo and how to autostart this when booting ubuntu....

In a shell, try:

export LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true

then start boxee from that shell.

*** I posted this in the XBMC linux support forum.. ***
*** http://xbmc.org/forum/showthread.php?t=40214 ***

Hi everyone,

Thought I created a new topic to let everyone know what works for me.

I had Underscan issues using HDMI and fullscreen OpenGL errors.

1. Installed Ubuntu 8.10 final
2. Installed all updates
3. Used the restricted driver.

After rebooting I had a big black border surrounding my screen no mather what screen resolution I selected.

4. opened up a terminal and entered this: aticonfig --initial
5. entered this: aticonfig --set-pcs-val=MCIL,DigitalHDTVDefaultUnderscan,0

reboot.

Now my black borders were gone, as in: no more underscan!

The other problem I had was that boxee/XBMC looked messed up when entering fullscreen. Windowed looked fine...

So I opened up a terminal an entered this:

6. For Boxee: sudo .opt/boxee/run-boxee-window
7. For XBMC: sudo xbmc

This solved atleast my problems... hope it is of good use for anyone else...

P.S. If anybody knows how to change my default boxee shortcut to run with sudo rights please let me know because I hate opening up the terminal to run stuff...

So at step 7, instead of 'sudo xbmc' try:
LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=true xbmc

If that works you can set the LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT in your (or the system .profile) and then the regular xbmc startup will inherit it.

Did it work? I have the same problem..

Another question: Has anyone tried the new Catalyst 8.11 driver?

Does this mean the fix should trickle down into boxee?

I believe i have found a fix.

Right now. using the DVI-HDMI cable, ATI Drivers, and Intrepid i can get full screen boxee to work wonderfully.

If you are still having problems try going to software sources > updates > and then check the box for "Pre-Released Updates (Intrepid Proposed)"

Thanks leachbj!! Works perfectly now. I created a script to run in place of Boxee with the above info and I am able to watch Boxee in fullscreen now on Intrepid. :D

Now that is a lot of brass air fittings http://www.liangdianup.com/subpages/airfitting_1.htm there is just about every type
of air fitting that you could want. Wholesale prices too. I guess these could be used as small water pipe fitting also. I
used some of the parts to make my babington wvo burner.

I've been having this *same* issue for some time with an nvidia 7600 GS, and I've tried various different drivers, as well as toying with vsync and had no success. Excited that people have found a solution! Will give it a try and see if it helps.

Hey everyone... I stopped using linux for a while.. and switched to vista +boxee windows alpha...

Yesterday I decided to try and mess up my system again.

Here's what I did:

Downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 32bit
installed
set the display resolution to 1280x720

downloaded this driver: http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.7&product=2.7.4.3.3.3.1&lang=English&rev=9.5&ostype= (ati 9.5)

ran: sh ./ati-driver-installer-9-5-x86.x86_64.run (choose atuomatic install)
in terminal: sudo aticonfig --initial

reboot

In the CCC there's a overscan section (finally! thank god!) to fix the underscan issue.

installed boxee:
Go to System > Administration > Software Sources.
In Sources Software dialogue, select Third-Party Software tab, click Add, and enter:
for Jaunty: deb http://apt.boxee.tv jaunty main

After closing this dialogue use a terminal window, and enter sudo apt-get install boxee.

navigate to your boxee/userdata folder (it's hidden)
change the vsync tag from 2 to 0 (means off)
save.

start boxee
This got my video working. with compiz and no underscan issues!

Now for my other (new!) problem.
sound over s/pdif within boxee works.

But I didn't have any sound in ubuntu.
open a terminal and type: alsamixer
unmute the last 1 or 2 devices (ie99* something)
in the terminal type: sudo alsactl store 0
to save the settings.

I was finally able to get boxee working too. The problem now is audio through hdmi. It works fine outside of boxee with vlc or toteem.
