It should maybe be mentioned that you need a fairly fast CPU to be able to ‘garantee’ playback under Linux of all 1080p H.264 videos that are available to download from the internet these days. Either a Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.6Ghz or an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ 2.8Ghz (or an even faster processor, Intel Core 2 Duo processors are currently though more efficient than anything that AMD got to offer). This is because there is not yet a method of of-loading the video decoding process to the GPU so the CPU has to practically handle the whole load itself, (in 6-months from now this might no longer be the case).

For playback of 720p H264 videos you can go with a slower processor, but it should still really at least be a 1.8Ghz dual-core CPU.

More technical Linux hardware FAQ from XBMC:
For XBMC end-users the recommended minimum hardware requirement by Team-XBMC is a x86-based computer, with a 3D GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) that at least supports Shader Model 3.0 and OpenGL 2.0 (that features 24bpp or 32bpp for 3D hardware-acceleration support, which XBMC GUI need to run smoothly at an acceptable frame-rate). Graphic adapters that support DirectX version 9.0c or later usually meet all of those mentioned requirements, (Team-XBMC recommends NVIDIA GeForce 6150 or later as NVIDIA is currently the only GPU hardware manufacturer that offers really good device-drivers for Linux (and NVIDIA GeForce 6150 or later supports OpenGL 2.0).

OpenGL 2.0 is not really the current minimum requirement to run XBMC, as in reality XBMC will today run with only OpenGL 1.4 + GLSL support (everything else has fall-backs to be runned in software on the CPU, slower than GPU hardware though), however to be sure to stay future-proof Team-XBMC have decided that the OpenGL 2.0 is the recommended minimum requirement.

good point about performance. you would need a strong cpu for bluray/hddvd sourced content at full bitrate. lower bitrate, even for 1080p content, can be played on lower level cpus and even simple gpus. a mac min grade hw is a good example, at 1.86Mhz cpu, and an Intel GMA 950 GPU.

additionally, opengl 2.0 is not a must. case in point, the GMA 950 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA) has opengl 1.4 and works just fine. it depends on what ARB extensions (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARB) are present afaik.

With a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 and the latest Catalyst driver (8.7), I am close to having boxee working on an MSI K9AGM2-FIH motherboard - which uses the AMD 690G chipset. Initial driver install left me with the white screen of death, but "aticonfig --initial --force" got everything up and running.

UI seems smooth and relatively snappy, but playing video results in a mess - you can see the video but it's got plenty of smears and streaks and is unwatchable.

Also, closing boxee returns to the desktop and the desktop is completely garbled and split into two halves.

Seems to be OK playing video (DVD) outside of boxee. I've also tested 720p, 1080i with a previous driver and neither was a problem. I have not tested yet with current driver, but I have no reason to think there will be any issues with anything less than full 1080p. I'm using AMD x4800+ w/ 2GB ram.

Any suggestions from the Linux gurus? Possible to share the xorg.conf file of the x1600 that was tested successfully? I'm pretty green with linux - so please be gentle!

Thx!
BTW - Boxee looks great otherwise.

Is the Linux version compatible with 64-bit processors and/or versions of linux? If not, it may be worth specifying that in the list of supported hardware.

No 64-bit distro from boxee yet. Need to be at 32 for now, or compile your own....

But the 32 Bit Version (Only Vers) should run fine on 32 Bit Linux version installed on 64 Bit Dual (X2) AMD MoBo.You CAN Run 64 Bit OS & Software on 64 Bit CPU's but 32 bit ALSO runs fine.Case in point XP 32 Bit Version.I have same CPU as above AMD AM2 X2 4800+.Plan on installing Ubuntu & Boxee. That is as soon as i get an invite!......Hint ;0)

haven't tried, but the next source tree (coming with the next version real soon) might compile under 64bit.

wouldn't boxee work on a 64 bit ubuntu if you found the missing libraries and threw them into the magic 32 bit library directory? (i just ran into this with another 32 bit package, just got another of my boxes with unbuntu and grabbed the libs needed and copied them over)

i'd try this but i'm also awaiting an invite. (subtle hint, subtle hint) ;)

ps all lower case is tricky, i'm well trained to use the shift key, have to go back and uncap stuff. :)

Up until I bricked my motherboard while moving it to a new case, I had Boxee working great on a GeForce FX 5500 video card under Ubuntu (Mythbuntu, actually) 8.04 with the "nonfree" NVidia driver. Audio was nForce3 on the motherboard (I only tried stereo, not surround).

boxee will not run for anyone using a creative labs sound blaster x-fi series card. since creative decided to drop the ball and not release working sound drivers, the only existing drivers that allow sound with that card are oss. alsa has not released anything for that series yet. so, x-fi owners cannot use this application.

ok, i got my invite and i'm on my way to becoming a boxee user.
i downloaded the program (on a 32 bit ubuntu) and transferred it to my 64 bit box which of course complained that the deb package was 32 bit. with a bit of wedging i managed to get it installed (--force all is a wonderful thing ;)
then of course it complained about various (11) libraries missing so i copied those from the 32 bit box and threw them into /lib/i686-linux-gnu and boxee now starts, but i have no idea what it's doing (i just did this from work through an ssh session, can't see how the graphics work till i get home)
i'll report back once i get home and let you know if i have a functional boxee on 64 bit ubuntu.

Hello, just tried this out on Ubuntu 8.04 on an Inspiron 6400.

graphics hardware:

iain@inara:~$ lspci | grep Graphics
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

It crawled to the point of being unusable :P

As noted in the first post, not the best graphics chip to be running (BTW, didn't see what the asterisk in the first post was referring to) Runs compiz without breaking a nail though.

I think I'll probably end up building something small form factor to run this on instead.

@Strawp - it may actually work better then you think, editing the file ~/.boxee/UserData/guisettings.xml

find the key "vsync" and change its value to 0

gpu
intel 945*
<snip>
* see known issues below

curious as to what the known issues are? i see the disable vsync comment above, so i'm assuming the caveat is that it's not quite up to the task.

out of interest, can anyone comment on tearing with vsync disabled? also, i was hoping to drop in a mac mini i have here as the frontend, but it's only a 1.83ghz c2d, so i'm assuming my 1080p viewing will be restricted in bitrate... anyone got some idea of the bitrate limits under boxee on this hardware?

i'll likely produce some gentoo ebuilds on 64bit once the next round of invites come through and there's up-to-date source (svn/hg/whatever?)

hanging for the gsoc pvr integration to come through over at xbmc, might try and chip in once it drops as i'll currently probably have to launch a myth instance from boxee for tv scheduling which is less than optimal...

bah, removing all caps... sorry if some of this is a bit ot...

hi dor

sorry ...the Radeon Mobility 7500 is unsupported. our minimal requirements include an opengl 1.4 compatible card. according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...ocessing_units, your card is an open gl 1.3.

My 7300GT works great, with the non-free drivers. And with my low-grade 1.6ghz sempron it may have some lags in a one place or another, but if I don't decide to watch full HD, I'm pretty satisfied with my old PC and boxee. I have an all silicon motherboard so the sound-card should be from silicon, Ill check it right away.

EDIT: The sound-processor is SiS Sl7012! And it works !* ;)

What kind of kernel do you have ? The x86 or i386 ? The i386 has had some problems, but they are easily fixable, so just scoop the forums for you're solution.

If you compile EVERYTHING from source, not just boxee, but all the libraries then it is possible, its just a thing I wouldn't want to fiddle around for 10 hours with a possibility of anything happening, in which case the whole work can burst into flames that eat up all the project till the point where you have to start from something that's worse than scrap.

yeah 10 hours is something I don't have right now
I guess some killer unix geek will try it one day and make a build script available or something. till that day, my ps3 will collect dust.
oh this would be so good...

Graphics problem

System Info:
AMD 2.3 ghz brisbane core
Gigabyte 680G HDMI motherboard
2 gigabytes of ram

After installing a new OS (Ubuntu 8.04) and installing all necessary drivers (including ATI graphics drivers). I installed Boxee and tried to start it up. The screen goes nuts with black green and white colors flashing. nothing is readable. If I press the tab key to get out of full screen I can see it perfectly but as soon as I go back into full screen it goes nuts again.

Any help would be much appreciated. I know the hardware I have is not supported but I figured I could get it going. :(

Hi,

Just found out about boxee, looking good, really looking forward to using it.

This is a message for clarkbark, but applies to anyone else who may know the answer, where did you get the 780G mainboard as I am trying to buy one but everyone seems to be out of stock (I live in UK and a UK supplier would be preferred).

Thanks.

Works great on Ubuntu 8.04 with
Dual core 2.13 w/ 4 GB RAM & GeForce 7300 GT- This was an Ubuntu preinstalled Dell I bought over a year ago (except the video card was added separately).
Completely problem-free installation.
I can only hope that it'll run on my mini-itx via system that I bought for this...

Working pretty well on my pretty vanilla Ubuntu 8.04 install. Current system is a Gigabyte motherboard with a q6600 Intel 2.33 ghz quad core chip, 3gb RAM, nVidia 8600 video card, onboard ALC888 (intel-hd) sound card. I have a couple of issues mentioned in other threads but the only one that really hurts is no SPDIF optical out sound for Hulu and the like.

I saw that thread already indeed, but if there is a slight change on an ebuild which needs testing the gentoo community would be more helped I think. Plus i personally have an ebuild myself also makes future updating much easier :)

System: Ubuntu 8.10 (32 bit) - Intel Core 2 Quad CPU - 3Gb RAM - NVidia 7300SE gpu w/512k VRAM (dual head) - NVidia driver 177.80

Installed 'Hardy' version with no apparent difficulty. On app launch I note that it centers on the desktop, which being split across two displays is more than a tad annoying. Definitely needs to be able to move the app in a multi-screen environment.

Troll thru the menus, no issues. Go to Movie Trailers, select a trailer, loads fairly quickly, starts to play (apparently), displays the rating bar and... nothing!

App is locked. No response to keyboard or mouse. Ended up exitting to a terminal screen and killing the Boxee process to recover.

Not the best start...

Boxee running successfully on Hardy with my Shuttle SB62G2: 2.4Ghz P4, 1.5 GB RAM, ATI 3450 HD. Using ATI proprietary drivers.

Had to add line "blacklist snd_hda_intel" to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist. Otherwise no sound. Notice that sound only seems to work out of device 0, which would be the HDMI port on my video card in this case. Blacklisting this device causes the on-board Intel ICH to be device 0. Running 'aplay -l' will show these devices.

Note that on the Shuttle, with Hardy, The normal line out port does not seem to work. Have to use the Surround out port and set the volume for that port with alsamixer.

Successfully using a remote from a Hauppauge PVR250, will post the remote xml soon...

8.10 isn't "officially" supported yet. There's a couple of threads around about getting it to work with it.

For the dual monitor problem, edit the /opt/boxee/run-boxee-desktop script and add:

export SDL_VIDEO_FULLSCREEN_HEAD=1

somewhere near the top. From the XBMC readme:

----------------------------------------
7.2 Multi-monitor Fullscreen
----------------------------------------

If you have a multi-monitor setup and you want to run XBMC fullscreen
only on one monitor, then make sure to set the environment variable
SDL_VIDEO_FULLSCREEN_HEAD to the display no. which you want to use.

For e.g. "SDL_VIDEO_FULLSCREEN_HEAD=1 ./xbmc.bin" to tell XBMC
to use display no.1.

Note: Nvidia Twinview users should be aware that X treats the
twinviewed displays as the same head. If you want to run fullscreen
XBMC on one display and start it from the other you must configure X
with two "Device" sections against the same physical card. See chapter
16 of the Nvidia user guide for information on how to do this.

Acer Aspire 5610 Laptop
2GB Ram
Intel integrated graphics
VGA-out to a 42" LCD TV
Running Linux Mint 5 (Ubuntu Hardy base system)
Windows MCE remote

Installed fine. Graphics (surprisingly) smooth, and remote is responsive. All local media seems to play fine. Internet radio and movie trailers are also good. Ran into the infamous "pulse audio" issue with streaming internet media like Hulu. But I followed the instructions to "un-brick" pulse audio, and everything works fine now. This is the BEST media center I have *ever* used! And I've been through a bunch. Myth, Freevo, Geexbox, Elisa, you name it. I'll be using it daily, and blogging about it (http://um-reloaded.blogspot.com).

Peace!

I was surprised that boxee worked 'ok' ! Mouse movement was not great however the keyboard responded much better for navigation.

Watched some CNN and movie trailers and was impressed tbh. Overall loadavg 0.6.

The machine is not capable of HD playback so I won't even try but divx should (edit:*does*) work

Notes.

Jump out of gnome quick!. xorg and the WM was wasting my CPU. Also push the CPU to 900mhz and turn stepstep off. Finally switch to fluxbox goodness.

Apply vsync to 0.

I wanted to let you know that my emachines 2.7 P4 with 700mb RAM and a Radeon 2400 HD works great. The 2400 HD was kind of a pain to get configured with accelerated tv out, but now it's up and perfect. Everything runs smooth, except for hulu, which is a little laggy. I've heard that is pretty common though?

I downloaded the Ubuntu 8.04 Boxee. I am running Ubuntu 8.10 on a Dell Inspiron 530 with a Q9300 quad Intel CPU, 2G RAM, 320G hard drive. The Dell unit came with Ubuntu 8.04 installed and has run very well and I think a pretty good deal for $550.

Boxee works quite well. I am still figuring everything out but in general it is pretty intuitive. I have not ventured into the documentation yet (I hope there is some?).

I am interested in using Boxee with Netflix as soon as that is possible. I have tried Hulu and had very good response with only very infrequent pauses or hick-ups. The resolution I get with Hulu is very much better than Netflix on Windows (via VMWare). The Netflix quality is not really watchable. I hope Netflix via Boxee will be better. It seems that if Hulu can do it Netflix should be able to do it also -- but then again Microsoft's Silverlight is probably to blame, after all it from Microsoft.

Hi, I am trying to make Boxee work on my old PC which has a GA-8S650GXM-P motherboard (SIS650 based) with onboard SIS video, running a P4 1.7Ghz CPU with 512MB RAM. I am running Hardy.

Boxee installed fine, but when I run it, it blanks the screen for a few seconds and then Ubuntu goes back into the login screen.

I suspect that the hardware is not upto it - specially the onboard video. Can anyone confirm if this indeed is the issue.

Thanks @marcel: Since my onboard display is not ATI or NVIDIA, I cant use Envy to install drivers, but I will do the glxinfo and glxgears test to verify that my hardware and drivers are OpenGL compatible.

Boxee installed fine but when I click on the menu item to run it the screen blinks and that about it. I thought this could be due to the graphics drivers so I ran Envy and it still does the same thing. My system configuration is listed below. I would appreciate help on figuring this out.

Hi there!

Well, im extremely pleased with the new version of Boxee.

Running AWESOME in this configuration:

Model: K45 Shuttle Barebone (http://global.shuttle.com/product_detail.jsp?PI=1068)

CHIPSET: Intel 945GC + ICH7
RAM: 2GB ram
CPU: Intel(R) Celeron(R) CPU 430 @ 1.80GHz
VGA: Intel GMA 950
AUDIO: Realtek ALC662 5.1 Channel High Definition audio. Disabled in BIOS and replaced by this XITEL MD-PORT DG2. (USB Audio, then fiber cable)

With the previous version, I got all day CPU 100% use....now, playing 720p content, I just got 35% - 45% max.

Operating System: Mythbuntu 8.10...then I disabled Mysql and all the Mythbuntu extensions, installed Gnome Desktop and Boxee. Installed Transmission and configured with Web administration..that's it.

Guys, thanks you soo much for Boxee!! This is my first official HTPC box, all day connected!

ps: all the HTPC here in chile, cost something like US$220...cheeeeaaapp!! ;)

I am running Boxee on a XBMC Live (installed) machine. I ripped out XBMC and installed Boxee.

After that, I had to do some manual configuration, and I had to install fluxbox, but everything appears to be working fine now. I think my biggest challenge was figuring out how XBMC started autmajically, and stopping it. Once that was done, the rest of the install was pretty easy. Here's my specs:

CPU model name : Intel(R) Pentium(R) Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz
VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)
MemTotal: 2074596 kB
CD-ROM Memorex DVD-ROM 210L v1 HM61 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

Everything looks really great on this setup. Well, except the screen. It's a crappy 15" monitor. Once I get it on my TV or on a widescreen monitor, it should look very nice.

no issues with this config. everything including 1080p h264 content is working fine with little or no frame skipping

I had no hardware related issues. I have lockups of the UI but I believe that is related to flakey internet and boxee not handling internet connection loss very well.

Seems like most features work OK, some of the streaming video lags a bit, not sure if thats from performance or internet troubles however.

In order to use audio I need to kill pulseaudio ... otherwise the audio gets stuck in a loop.... This is the same for xbmc as well

I tried running Boxee on my MythTV box (Ubuntu Hardy) and it immediately segfaults (taking X down with it, dumping me back at the GDM login screen).

I suspect it just won't work with my hardware: I'm using the TV-out of my Hauppauge WinTV PVR-350, using the ivtvfb driver. Any idea if it's possible or should I just give up? :)

Apple TV running Ubuntu 8.04

Base system installed a while ago using these instructions: http://code.google.com/p/atv-bootloader/wiki/InstallLiveXBMC (but there might be much better/easier ways to do that now). Here's what I configured since then:

Have tty1 always automatically log in as user 'xbmc':

/etc/event.d/tty1

start on stopped rc2
start on stopped rc3
start on stopped rc4
start on stopped rc5

stop on runlevel 0
stop on runlevel 1
stop on runlevel 6

respawn
exec /sbin/mingetty --noclear --autologin xbmc tty1

On login, if we booted up with 'splash', then start X.

/home/xbmc/.bashrc

# snipped irrelevant parts...

case `tty` in
/dev/tty[1])
noAutorunXParam=splash
cmdLineParams=`cat /proc/cmdline`

runX=`echo $cmdLineParams | grep $noAutorunXParam | wc -l`
if [ "$runX" == 0 ]; then
echo "Not starting X."
else
echo "Autostarting X..."
startx -- -br
logout
fi
;;
esac

In my xserverrc I load the nvidia graphics card settings, then set the resolution to 720p, then start boxee:

/home/xbmc/.xserverrc

#!/bin/bash

nvidia-settings -l
# underclock the GPU
nvidia-settings -a GPUOverclockingState=1
nvidia-settings -a GPU2DClockFreqs=200,800

xrandr -s 1280x720

exec dbus-launch /opt/boxee/run-boxee-desktop

In the XOrg config, I disable TurboCache because the AppleTV only has 256MB of memory, and I don't want any of that going to the video card. Also, I disable DynamicTwinview so that xrandr works properly.

I'm seeing Segmentation faults when I try to launch it. I tried a back trace and it hung the system and there isn't anything useful in the log.

Execute:

ulimit -c unlimited
Then run boxee, this will generate a coredump which will be useful in identifying the part of the code causing the problem.

Hi,

I am looking to build a system to run Boxee/XBMC under Linux, my ATV just isn't cutting it.

I want a fairly "thin client" that does little else than play media streamed off my server and the web, hence I would like it to be as small and quiet as possible. Mini-ITX seems about right, as the available cases are less clunking that the usual Micro-ATX equivalents.

The end result needs to be able to play 1080p/24fps, with HDMI audio, reading around it seems like a 3ghz Intel Core 2 Duo is required for this. The trouble being, ITX support for socket 775 chips is extremely limited.

After some searching I think i've come up with a few board options.

First is the Intel DG45FC (http://www.intel.com/Products/Desktop/Motherboards/DG45FC/DG45FC-overview.htm), which seems OK but has a measly single PCI-E 1x expansion slot and integrated Intel graphics.
Second is the Zotac GeForce 9300-ITX WiFi (http://www.zotac.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=300&Itemid=425), which looks promising with integrated GeForce 9300 graphics, WiFi, HDMI w/audio, as well as a PCI-E x16 slot to allow for some future expansion options. This isn't on the market yet, but should be in a month or so.

I have built Linux machines before but would not classify myself as particularly expert, so would really appreciate any comments the Boxee community may have on these (possibly hare-brained) plans.

Is there anything inherent in either of those boards that would be incompatible with either Linux (prob Hardy) or Boxee?

As a follow on bonus, does anyone have experience using solid state disks with Linux? Is this possible?

Thanks all.

Boxee sort of works. If I generate the xorg.conf via envyng then when using the standard kernel module seems to work but envyng doesn't recognise the driver and manually installing seems to fail to "build" at startup. It's a bit strange, is all I can say.

Just completed the install without problems. However, can't see the cursor/arrow in the Boxee window. The arrow appears after 10-15 seconds if you don't move it. This, obviously, makes it impossible to use. Am going to check for upgrades to Intel x3100 driver, but I believe I have a recent version. FYI The system has a 2GHz Centrino Pro, 3GB memory, big harddrive. I have all updates to the OS installed. Is this system below spec?

I have also found that theres a boxee channel on Undernet as well. Seems to be alot smaller but a tad more helpfull.

/server us.undernet.org

/join #boxee

Some of you might want to check that one out as well.

Before anyone asks, no, I'm not in the wrong thread, I have Ubuntu 8.10 and Boxee installed in a Mac Mini 1.83 and works nicely, even capable of playing 1080P content without a hitch. I just need to discover how to put the remote to work. Preferably my Harmony 890 and not the original Apple remote.

Hi, I'm using an old Acer Travelmate 803Lci with ATI 9000 Mobility Radeon graphics, 1.25Gb RAM and Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04.2. No problems encountered when using Boxee apart from volume seems to vary between channels eg MTV, BBC Iplayer, Comedy Channel, so when I change channels I have to reset the volume control.

I'm running boxee on an old Toshiba Satellite Laptop with:

1.5 GHz Pentium M
Nvidia Geforce 420 go
1 GB DDR Ram
Ubuntu 8.10

The geforce 420 needs some tweaking of the xorg.conf file before it will work. The default ubuntu config yields the wsod.

I was surprised that my machine could handle 720p content (apple movie trailers). It of course fails miserably when I throw anything 1080 at it. Overall I'm pretty pleased. The interface is a little laggy with my setup. It is a little jerky and sometimes stalls when I try to switch tabs. I have stereo audio, I'm not sure if my laptop will output surround sound.

I'll try boxee with my Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition eventually.

As it is right now, the GPU on the server is just made of fail, lol.

Same for hard drive space.

If you're curious, the server's specs are at http://shatteredtears.com/phpsysinfo

Note: It may take a while to load, as it seems to be somewhat slow in responding to HTTP queries. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

Obviously, when looking at the GPU section, it is made of utter fail, but hey, the server's running commandline, so it's powerful enough for that, which is exactly what I wanted.

Also, I know X applications can be forwarded. So I may very well try the X forwarding thing, and view Boxee that way.

I'm using an ati radeon HD 4850, i've tried different drivers for the video card.

when i use my arrow keys to skip thru parts of videos after 2 skips, it'll slow down to a halt. After about 20 seconds it'd skip to another frame, but the video won't play anymore.

My set-up:

Ubuntu 8.10 64-bit
AMD Athlon 3500+ (~2.5Ghz single core)
1.5gb DDR1 333
ATi Radeon x850xt 256mb (using default restricted drivers)
20gb hard drive for /
80gb drive for /home

Hulu worked great but Revision 3 shows always lock up

Joost also works well but it's a little slow to navigate.

I'm running 0.9.9.5324 on Dell Studio Hybrid with Ubuntu 8.10 x86_64.

Hardware:
Intel C2D T5850 (2 x 2.1GHz)
6GB DDR2-667
Intel GMA X3100 (mobile version of GM965) using HDMI out
Integrated Audio (either Intel or Realtek, will check later) using toslink out
Belkin ABGN WiFi card over a 802.11G network

Streaming works well, I can play a 1080P apple trailer with no lag, pegs one of the CPU's at around 70%.

Getting the X3100 to display in 1080P on one of my TV's (a two year old Vizio 47") was a major pain in the butt, but my 40" Toshiba displayed 1080P just fine. This is more of a Ubuntu/X11 issue, actually it's caused by Vizio not reporting the correct values via DDC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Data_Channel). Manually adding the 1920x1080 ModeLine and disabling DDC in my xorg.conf resolved this issue.

2gb DDR2
Onboard via via X4500 HDMI
Onboard Audio via optical out

No sound via optical out (Ubunutu issue). Cannot get it to work (no light at all). Not a bios issue as it works on windows.

Boxee used to crash from time to time when going form movies to music etc.

Added my network shares (auto mount on start up), then start Boxee, now Boxee crashes shortly after the login screen. My guess is that I have way to many music files and movies it tries to scan and add...

Any way of clearing these paths from a config file?

I can't get Boxee stable with what I got. It freezes the whole machine or plays at double the speed with pretty much every video I've tried. I'm new to Linux and new to Boxee. Here is my hardware:

Intel D865PERL motherboard
P4 3.0 HT
2GB RAM
Geforce 6800 GT

At first I was thinking it was a driver issue but videos of all kinds play fine when I'm not in Boxee. XBMC also acts the same way. Is there anything I can try or is it just my hardware?

Thanks!

MiniPC and NetVista X40

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I completed fresh installs on 2 units running 8.04:
1. AOpen MiniPC 945D (microATx, Core2 T5700, 2GB, Intel 945G Graphics)
2. Vintage IBM NetVista X40 (all-in-one, P3 500MHz, 256MB, SiS630 Graphics)

Boxee runs fine on #1 and fails to load on #2, leaving no traces of error. Once I launch Boxee I get a black full screen which immediatly disappears, reverting to the Ubuntu desktop.

The Vimeo promo video on Boxee.tv homepage plays fine so I assume that the decoding power and video graphics capability is there.

I have not really seen any minimum requirements for this app to run so I don't know if I have a Hutzpah or there is something trivial like driver mismatch.

I also noticed during the installation some script errors when the SSL lib was installed. I can certainly help with more details if someone will help me with instructions where to dig.

NVidia GeForce 5500
intel pentium 4: 3 ghz
Ubuntu 8.04

Works marginally well, high quality clips skip but I am able to stream lower quality videos just fine.

Low to no functionality.

On both builds I had a mythtv backend running which may add to the cpu load and cause the decreased functionality.

currently Ubuntu 8.04 - tried 8.1 with little success as well as mythdora 5

Hardware:
Intel Pentium 4 3.00 ghz
1.0 GB RAM
NVidia GeForce fx 55000
PVR -500 dual tuner card
2 x 250gb hard drives
DVD drive
Motherboard: P4P800-E ASUSTeK Computer Inc.

Works fairly well - choppy network streams, and lagy you tube.

Does anyone know the release date for the next Linux version?

Note: I used the following thread to get this working under Ubuntu 8.10 64 Bit:
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=4980

Working hardware configuration:
ASUS M3N78-EM Motherboard (embedded Geforce 8300)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 7750 Kuma X2 2.7 Ghz
RAM: 2 GB RAM 1066
OS: Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10 64 bit, Nvidia drivers installed from website rather than Ubuntu's management apps.

Notes:
-Video Streams run fine.
-Local 720p content runs quite well ~25 fps, minimal frames dropped (depending on the encoding).
-Local 1080p content runs badly ~20 fps, lots of frames dropped
-Audio sounds fine when it is working, which can be effected by Ubuntu's usage of the audio system (sometimes Boxee will play no sounds at all, other times it will work perfectly).
-Beginning of video playback often strange, sped up or drops a lot of frames.
-This same hardware config runs 1080p content flawlessly on the XBMC Windows build (under win xp sp3 32bit). On that OS with XBMC CPU usage is ~ 50% when playing back 1080p content encoded in X264 or H264.

-Preliminary interface suggestions:
-It would be cool to see an 'invite' option built into the interface (rather than having to go to the website).
-You guys are awesome. <8

New to Linux here. Installed 9.0.4 and I am liking it.
Just installed Boxee. When starting it up, a screen opens
and minimizes and disappears after 5 seconds.

Running this all on my laptop Asus A7J

we have release boxee for Linux today, tested on the following hardware:

gpu
nvidia 6150le igp, go7300 mobile, 8600m gt mobile and 7,8 series desktop gpus
intel 945*, 965, X3000, X3100 igp
ati x1600 mobile gpu

* see known issues below

cpu
current intel and amd processors

audio
intel hda

we'd appreciate work/not-work reports on different hardware, and of cause, any issues you may have encountered with the listed hardware.
I'm a newbie so sorry if this sounds like an obvious fix.
Dell D610
ATI X300 running Ubuntu Jaunty (32 bit v.9).

When I load Boxee it starts and then stops immediately (not even a black screen). Any ideas as to why? Is there a fix?

Hey guys

Just installed the current version on 9.04 32bit (downloaded all the updates and everything). Unfortunately, the performance is extremely slow, to the point of where it is difficult to log in. I tried closing Boxee, then reopening it and it is even slower. I wonder if this might point to memory leak? I've tried rebooting and opening only Boxee.. but it's still deadly slow.

Here's my specs:
Shuttle SN68SG2
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ Brisbane 2.3GHz
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel
SAPPHIRE HDMI Radeon HD 3450 512MB (although im not even connecting via HDMI right now, just regular VGA)

EDIT: I'm also using the most current version of the ATI drivers, I dont know the version number though.

I dont think these specs are super low, it should be able to run it decently, right?

Anyways, I'd love to help figure out whats up with this, cause xbmc runs fine on this machine. Cheers

Just a quick post:

Atom 330 with Ubuntu 9.04 works well.

Graphics is the Intel 945GC --

Atom N270 with Ubuntu 9.04 is OK for video, not so good for Flash dependent stuff with Intel 945GSE.

1GB RAM in both

Irony is the iTouch/iPhone costs more than the machine.

The problem with boxee starting and then stopping all of a sudden is a graphics driver problem.

If boxee starts and then crashes without displaying anything the problem is either the drivers or your video hardware does not support open gl 1.4.

Open GL 1.4 is the MINIMUM required to run boxee. If you do not have this it WILL NOT run.

I have also found that Nvidia 6200 series is the minimum Nvidia card that works properly with boxee. I have not been able to get the 5500 cards to work for me, but I may be doing something wrong. I never went back to the 5500 card to find out if the drivers were open GL 1.4 compatible.

My older ATI cards only support open GL 1.3 and I can not get them to work.

Some of the newer ATI cards do not have drivers for Linux yet so you have to haunt the Linux boards looking for drivers for them and hoping someone is working on the drivers as we speak.

Bottom line:

If boxee starts and then crashes without giving you the logon screen, look to make sure you are running open GL 1.4

If starting a new build from scratch specifically for Boxee, what would be the recommended hardware? I'm thinking small/quiet mATX with HDMI out for video/audio. Have been using it on my Macbook but want to convert to something that can sit under the TV!

I'm considering setting up a mini-itx system with F11 and I was wondering if anyone in these forums could tell me if they've set up Linux and Boxee on a Zotac mini-itx board? If so, what were your results? Did the HDMI port work? Any issues with the system performing poorly while playing movies or streaming video?

My current systems have old, single core P4 (Northwood and Prescott) CPUs, and streaming flash videos on the Internet tend to stutter and crash Boxee. I'm hoping that the newer dual-core CPU on the zotac boards can handle flash streaming better. My main concern is that the CPUs on this board are only 1.6GHz though. Not sure if that's enough horsepower.

Here's the board I was thinking of getting:

Linux is also exciting because it opens the door for boxee to run on a variety of hardware platforms and configurations, from users building their own media centres to hacking existing boxes to run Linux/boxee. I am using this.

My system is running the following hardware (at the moment, subject to upgrading):

Gigabyte MA785GM-US2H Mainboard w/ATI on-board video, HDMI, etc. Nice board, does everything and is very low-priced now if you can find one. It's also small, so it fits in the small HTPC cases. Mine is in an Antec Fusion.

AMD Athlon II X2-250 Dual Core CPU (I will probably be upgrading to a AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz, since this system will be pulling double duty as a game server.)

4 GB RAM

I've just installed Linux Mint Gnome 9 and the default video player plays 1080 full screen perfectly. The only problem is, Boxee can't access the hard drive with my movies and it's on the same system. I can actually access other Windows computers on the network with Boxee, but not the drive I need. I've posted this under a help thread with no replies.

This response may be a bit late, but just in case you're still experiencing difficulties or others view this and have a similar problem, the solution is fairly simple.

1. Make sure it's mounted -- If they're all on a partition or hard drive that's not linux's root partition, you will need to mount it if it's not. i.e. 'mount -t ntfs /dev/sda2 /mnt/windows' if you are dual-booting and need your windows partition mounted (assuming it's ntfs and sda2). Your distro may have automatically setup a mount point, check /mnt and /media as those are the usual locations.

2. For convenience, symlink these directories to your home directory -- To extend the previous example, 'ln -s /mnt/windows ~/windows' will create a symbolic link (think shortcut) from it's mount point to 'windows' in your home folder.

3. Add the source -- I'm assuming people know how to add a source, so this should be obvious, but select your user's directory and your newly created symlink will be there.
