Testing boxee on my ATV, MacBook Pro and iMac.
A little frustrated for now at the lack of content that is accessible from the UK. Installed the BBC iPlayer plugin but doesn't work most of the time. Other channels (Sky, 4, More4 etc.) all seem to use Windows-only streaming technology.
That said, I still think it's a great product!

Having Americans on your Boxee friends list isn’t very helpful, given the amount of streaming content they watch that isn’t available to us over here. Anyone want to start swapping usernames and building up a UK friends list to see what the social side of Boxee is like?

It does go up and down. Sometimes I have no problems as all sometimes it buffers alot. Just depends on which connection you are lucky enough to get I guess. If it does jump ive found that pausing and waiting for maybe a minute usually sorts out the problem.

Inherited my dads old Mac Mini and stumbled across boxee by accident while trying to turn it into a basic media centre. Doesn't do what I wanted it to (play standard DVDs and xvids burned to DVDR) but does so much more I hadn't even considered (all the internet loveliness) that I've become hooked!
Now I'm patiently waiting to get onto the Windows Alpha, as my main computer is my PC in the flat, and I want boxee goodness on there too!

As most developers of plugins seem to be from the US. Is there any UK based plugins that people want to see? Not promising anything but Id quite like to write something. As iplayer is now working im not sure what else is UK only? ITV, Five or 4OD (although all these have mac issues)
poprock
February 10th, 2009, 10:31 AM
You’ve covered the main ones, but do Sky have any content online?
Could there be a way of linking up with iPlayer’s high quality streams, rather than the standard ones the official Boxee app uses?
Do LoveFilm have any streaming movies you could do a Netflix-type thing with? (LoveFilm also have Mac issues, mind you.)
Obviously there’s already a Joost app, but could you do something with Joost’s UK content, since the official Boxee app shows us all the American links we can’t view?
Just some ideas, not sure how feasible any of that is.

East Midlands here.
Long time XBMC user on original XBoxes - have one on each TV in the house accessing music and movies from shares on my Mac. Great bit of kit. I'm interested in Boxee for a number of reasons:
1. this seems to be where the support and action is at now - not much happening on the original XBox platform any more (or I daren't make any further changes for fear of losing the great stability I have now)
2. tight integration with online video content, in particular the BBC iPlayer
3. proper HD :D
4. we're a house full of Macs (one Mac Pro, one PPC PowerMac, one MacBook and one iMac) and I like the idea of us all seeing what we've each watched/listened to etc etc
5. I'm looking for something new to geek with
Having tested the app on my Mac, I'm really impressed with the polish and thoughtfulness, even though it is still 'alpha'. So I'm about to build my own Boxee Box. Not sure whether to go OS X (installed from a legit 'familty pack' license FYI) or Ubuntu so I've picked a parts list that should do fine under either:
- Gigabyte G31M-S2L micro ATX board
- Intel E5200 dual core (same architecture as Core 2 Duo but half the price)
- 2GB DDR2
- Nvidia 8400GS 512MB
and I'm going to stick it all in this:

Has anybody set up their mac to record TV programs (free view etc using UK channels and program guide) and made it available through Boxee? If so what did you use and any pointers to details would be great.
Given Netflixs is not available here - and lovefilms don't have a video streaming is their any other way of getting films by ip streaming?

It’s not so elegant, but I’m using Elgato EyeTV 3 with a Miglia TVmini aerial input. The standard TVTV.com subscription that you get with EyeTV works pretty well, letting you set recordings through a web browser from anywhere. Making it available to Boxee means having to export recordings from EyeTV to a folder on my external HD in an appropriate format (I use H.264)—thankfully EyeTV can do that all automatically though.

Lovefilm do have video streaming, but it is currently Windows only. They plan to release it for Mac in the next few months. Once it’s up and running, we need someone to write a Boxee app for it!

You don't have to export at all. Admittedly I haven't tried it with Boxee yet, but with XBMC, I simply add the EyeTV archive folder as a share location and it can play the recordings in their raw (MPEG2) format. It is even happy playing a recording that is in progress. The only problem that I do get is that some filenames generated by EyeTV are illegal for XBMC - the most common are ones containing "/" (e.g. "Lost episode 3/24")

Whalley, Lancashire calling.....
I initially ran Boxee thru my MacBook Pro but I now have ATV running on 2.3.1 and the latest alpha release. I look forward to the next release (24th March, as far as I am aware).
I have Leopard Server running on a Mac Pro but I am still to work out how to connect to AFP shares. When I have tried SMB it was less than useless...
The MacBook Pro worked perfectly but I just didn't want it tied up constantly.
Everything is being streamed over an 802.11g network.
I would love to hear about other peoples experiences, iPlayer rocks on Boxee on ATV.

The unofficial word (off the record from a Lovefilm staff member) is that their streaming service has been switched off for the big relaunch, which should be in beta sometime in the next two months and fully available mid-summer. The new system should include streaming and download, with some movies being free to subscribers and the rest being pay per view.

An Aussie living in Bristol here.
I've recently installed Boxee on my Macbook.
It works ok so far, a little slower/not as responsive as i'd like but giving it a try.
My Anime stuff doesn't come up in Media, but most of my other stuff does.
I normally either use my Macbook connected to my TV using VLC or Frontrow or run an external 1TB drive through my PS3 for upscaling, however PS3 doesnt do any HD/.mkv files.
Ideally would like Boxee to be a slick, stable all in one solution.
I like the Internet content, however much of it is US only.
I can get Iplayer to load and show me what to view, however can't get any of the streams to work. It gives me something along the lines of "this is not available"
