View Full Version : Boxee Browser - how is it supposed to work?

I'm testing out the new Boxee Browser app in an attempt to access content that does not have an existing Boxee app or working RSS feed, but I'm running into issues which might just be me, or it could be the app, I'm not sure.

For example, I was trying to access videos on CWTV; I launch Boxee Browser, enter the URL (http://www.cwtv.com), get prompted about video mode and switch to browser mode, then the site loads. Immediately there are issues. First, the site has a Flash-based ad crawl for their shows that gets locked in place in the center of the page. I can scroll up and down through the page, but the ad crawl stays fixed in place while the site scrolls behind it. This makes it nearly impossible to access any of the links on the site, since I can't really see any of them to know if they are highlighted. Fortunately, the site does have a "Videos" link at the top of the page, just above the locked ad crawl, which I can highlight and access. However, that still has issues. It appears that the browser is treating the link like a full URL instead of a link within the existing domain, i.e. the link actually points to http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/ but the browser tries to go to www.cw-video.com.

Attempting to go straight to http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/ does work, but that has the same problem with a locked in place flash object that the site's main page has. The only way I was able to get to a video and actually play it (sort of, the video flickers badly, but that is an enormous improvement over the alpha where the video on CWTV didn't play at all) was to manually type the complete url directly to a video itself, such as http://www.cwtv.com/cw-video/smallville/smallville-legendary-preview/, while leaving video mode on. While this does work, it is an extremely cumbersome way to access content, especially when copy/paste functions don't seem to work in the beta at all (attempt to paste with CTRL+V just puts an "X" in the text field).

Given that CWTV is a site that was known not to work in the past, I decided to try another one that should have no issues: YouTube. No luck there at all. While the site was infinitely more navigable than CWTV (no locked Flash objects), attempting to access any links to any videos locks up Boxee and I have to end-task it to get out of it.

I realize that browser functionality is not really a high priority for Boxee, but this currently seems to lack the necessary functionality to make it useful at all for finding or watching video content... unless I am just missing something. Am I missing something or is the app currently just to immature to be used?

Windows XP SP3
Pentium 4 3.0GHz HT

GeForce 7600GS 256MB (AGP)

I have been trying to use the boxee browser in order to log in to my hulu account, which is necessary to view 'mature' content (i.e., it's always sunny in philadelphia) and to view 480p video streams. logging in with safari does not help, it seems like there needs to be some way to do it within boxee itself.

unfortunately, because of how limited the functionality of the boxee broswer is, i am not able to do this. i can get to the point where i see the text boxes necessary to enter my login info, but i can never select them, nor can i enter text. am i missing something, or is this not an option as of yet?

The boxee browser is very limited and will not work for login in to Hulu (this issue will be resolved in the next version)

I think we all expected limited functionality, after all, its not really meant for everyday web browsing, but it is currently too limited, as in I can't actually do anything at all with it. Can we expect the limitations (other than Hulu login) to relax a little with the next version?

That's good news and I look forward to that.

I installed Boxee on my Windows box just 2 days back. I still cannot do JACK with the Boxee Browser.

It will search and display the page. Then NOTHING. For example search "tom", chose "browser mode", it will go to google search page results. You can scroll results up and down, but that's it. The links are not clickable. Not very useful.

I must have completely missed the point of the Boxee Browser. Why be able to search something in "browser mode" only to be presented with a page that does not do anything useful? I can understand maybe "video mode" automatically starts playing some media file corresponding to "Tom". But that never really happens.

It would absolutely ROCK to be able to check my browser email thru my Apple TV (still haven't go it) sitting at my TV.

Can anyone even tell me ONE useful purpose served by the Boxee Browser app?

In v0.9 the Boxee Browser app is basically non-functional. (I've never understood why Boxee keeps it available in the general repository, myself).

If you want hulu just download the hulu desktop software then add it to the launchy app in boxee. Launchy will launch any program from within Boxee.

And you are saying I can still use my remote to navigate app running under the OS instead of as app inside Boxee. I wouldn't think so. That would be quite surprising.

I'm not sure what you're asking/stating but I know that the Hulu desktop application (separate from Boxee) works fine with an MCE remote on Windows...

Hulu has been blocked from the boxee browser to accessing the Hulu site. This is a disappointing development since and our browser, while optimized for a great 10 ft video experience, is no different in how it accesses this content than Internet Explorer, Firefox, Flock, Opera or any of the other browsers out there.

If Boxee browser acted like a real web browser you could get to sites and watch things like espn3.com etc.

They should kill off the boxee browser since you really can't go to any site with it.

The browser does work for a lot of sites, just not all; but it's how web content is going to get displayed on Boxee from here on out so they developers will be improving it as time goes on, not killing it off.

(I used it on CBS and ABC sites just last night, for example.)

I can get to espn 3 site but all it does is highlight the login box with a red square if it was a normal browser I should be able to click on it with my mouse and sign in.

Yes, logging in is currently broken but I believe it is fixed in the next update.

That could be a very longtime I don't see them upgrading soon. Hell we should have a Hulu Plus app by now they said by end of the year Netflix and Hulu Plus.

I now have doubts Hulu Plus is ever coming.

That could be a very longtimeWe've had two firmware updates since 10 November, the next one is very close actually (view this page for a list of items already fixed for the next release: http://jira.boxee.tv/secure/IssueNavigator.jspa?mode=hide&requestId=10268).

we should have a Hulu Plus app by now they said by end of the year [...]Hulu Plus.Boxee never said when Hulu+ would be available, only that they are working on it.
