the webserver works fine... it just has nothing to serve.

download boxee's source:
http://app.boxee.tv/download

place the 'web/iphone' folder in:
/opt/boxee/web/iphone

then you should be able to use:
http://192.169.1.103:8800/iphone

Ok this is weird if i dont have a password it fails to get a web page. When I give it a passsword say "a" it also wants a user name what would that be?

the defauls username is: xbox and the default password is your user password for logging into boxee.

but this shouldn't be required, by default.

also, are you navigating directly to:
[IP]:8800/iphone ?

try clicking on this link:
http://localhost:8800/iphone/default.asp

if none of that works, could you post-up the output of this command:

netstat -nal | grep 8800

..1. have enabled web server using port 8800

2. mkdir /opt/boxee/web/iphone (but I don't have an iphone)

3. Do iphone directory permissions matter? I haven't changed those.
$ ls -l
total 12
drwxr-xr-x 2 uman uman 4096 2008-11-10 01:31 iphone
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 2008-11-02 02:20 ubuntu

4. Tried accessing via url: http://localhost:8800/iphone/default.asp

5.
$ netstat -nal | grep 8800
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:8800 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.103:8800 192.168.1.103:43569 TIME_WAIT

6. Receive error:
Access Error: Site or Page Not Found

Cannot open URL

Thanks for any help you can provide!

You can't just mkdir iPhone, copy the directory. You have to copy the folder over from the source tarball. I've uploaded a ZIP file with the iPhone folder:

http://www.buddydog.org/iphone.zip

cd into the web folder and unzip -r the file.

Sweeet...
First of All, boxee rules!
However, ideally, I would like to be able to serve my media from the web server, like tversity.com. I installed the iphone interface, and this interface: http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=The_Web_Interface, but I think all it does is control boxee. It wouldn't let me play anything in the browser on the computer that didn't have boxee installed.

But the movie would start playing on computer that had boxee installed. I tried this with several movies, and the same thing happened. Ideally I would like to serve my movies and music over the internet, and have them accessible from anywhere. Thanks!

This is outside of the scope of the XBMC project, and probably Boxee as well. The HTTP server functionality was developed to provide a remote interface for the XBMC software. Best if used from right across the room, but I've implemented it in my home network in the past to control home-wide audio.

I'm co-opting this topic a bit, but better than creating a new one for one simple question.

when I go to http:tv.local:8800 the XBMC legacy web server is there, so boxee is running its web server.

However, there is NO /opt folder on my mac. Where does it reside? It isn't in Application Support/Boxee or /Library/Webserver and Spotlight doesn't find anything named opt.

Thanks.
