View Full Version : Calibrate screen on HDTVs?

I'm running boxee as a standalone box connected to my HDTV. The screen resolution, according to the manual, is 1280x720. When I set it to that the edges of the screen are cut off.

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04. If I let Ubuntu guess the resolution, it sets it to 1168x700 (not positive about the second number). This leaves a black border around the screen.

I asked on the #xbmc channel if there was a solution for this problem. The user stated that under Settings->Appearance->Screen->Calibrate it would allow me to specify the area of the screen to use. I don't see that in boxee. Was this functionality hidden for some reason?

If the functionality was hidden, is it possible for me to determine the size the screen should be and enter it unto a file that boxee would honor?

I'm using a GeForce FX 5500 card.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5500] (rev a1)

Either resolution works fine. By fine, I mean the picture is clear and displays properly. I've used the 1280x720 resolution with the same hardware running Windows Media Center 2005 for several years. It had the overburn issue too.

I'm hoping that I can set the resolution to 1280x720 and then instruct boxee to only use a smaller portion of that window so that I'm not effected by the overburn issue on the hdtv.

I just need to find out if I can access the calibration screen that is in XBMC or I need to figure out a way to set those settings in a configuration file so that boxee will use them for the display.

I forgot to mention that the tv is a Sony KDF-50E2000. Here are the specs:

In case somebody else stumbles on this problem, I had overlooked the setting. Boxee has it under the settings section. Look for the section that has screen on the left and select the option on the right that reads, "Video Calibration". It did the trick. The whole boxee UI will only display in the section the user selects as the visible part of the screen. Make sure the square in the center of the screen is square. Take a measuring tape and verify that the distance from top left to bottom right equals the distance from bottom left to top right.

My 720p TV actually runs at 1360x768, this seems to be the standard resolution for 720p attached to a computer (at least in the 2 or 3 HDTVs I've connected mine to).
