View Full Version : Apple TV Local Source???

This really has me confused:

When Boxee is installed on the Apple TV, will it only access network media (NAS, shared directories on a local networked computer), or can it access the movies and music currently on the Apple TV's hard drive that was synced using itunes? I would rather it do the latter, but I can't figure it out, and I cannot find anyone referencing this in the forums. Unless I'm blind or just plain dumb.

I'd love to figure this out. The interface is very cool, but I can't do anything with it yet!

Thanks,
NP

welcome to boxee

one way is to click on Settings in boxee's main menu, and there choose Media Sources :
- Local Sources are for files stored on your computer or storage devices attached directly to it . select "add new sources " and then browse to the contents location

- Network sources are all those directories on other computers and devices on your local area network.select "add new sources" and select the appropriate device/computer displayed or manually add the IP.

another way of adding a media source is via the Videos/Music/Pictures screen, select the Sources > Add Source.

enjoy

I appreciate your response.

I am wondering if you could comment specifically on where files are stored locally on the Apple TV's hard drive, or if you know anyone who has had luck accessing this media. I cannot seem to find it in the browser when adding a local source. Ideally I would just as soon have Boxee recognize the media that is on it already than have a redundant share that requires my iMac to be on, and hogs my network bandwidth.

Also my Music, Video and Pictures sources say "Not Connected" and Downloads says "Connected". Is this referring to the Downloads folder that Boxee made in Users/frontrow? Again, I am referring to Boxee running on the Apple TV.

Thanks,
NP

It looks like I missed this thread.

This is not good for me. I've spent a lot of time organizing my iTunes library, specifically for use on the Apple TV. I am very happy with the way it is now and I don't want to rename thousands of files and store them on an external drive (which requires hacking my ATV).

I think it is safe to say that the Apple TV/Boxee relationship might require some individual attention. I think Boxee will still work for me to play those HD formats and DTS audio files on my Apple TV for now.

Thanks! Keep up the great work. I will post any updates I find in my experience. BTW, not a single UI bug so far...:D
